What house plants do you put outside during the summer?

I put all my coleus,ferns,vines,and pineapple out during the summer. I might put out my dracaena this summer too.

What do you put out there?

Philodendron (giant split-leaved type), ficus trees. Hibiscus come in for the winter, go out for the summer. Giant (large leaved) schefflera simply must go out this year, the scale is sooooo bad. (I know--there are good systemics for this, but too many of my cats are plant eaters...)

I have a west facing deck: bright enough first half of the day, some full sun late afternoon. I also usually keep an umbrella open that shades some of the deck. My south/sw facing deck gets some sun and then nice shade from a few large trees in the yard.

I think the best place to go for ideas on exterior paint combinations is websites of paint manufacturers.....they sometimes show color combinations in threes: a dark, a mid-tone and a light color that all relate to each other. In my area, a hot combo now is taupe/cream/grey....but alot depends on the context and your neighbourhood, I think. Your house has more of a ski-lodge look (at least to me!) so I would draw inspiration from those types of places and towns, if it suits your neighbourhood. When you look at your trim, it may have different facets to it (if it has been constructed by combining more than one piece of wood around each edge of a window). So you could paint the perimeter of each window's trim in one color, and the innermost trim in another, for each window. I wouldn't use different colors in different areas--they should all be the same. Looking at your photos, it struck me that the trim appears to be too thin, and so may be made of a single piece of trim around each window. In that case, it would be more balanced -- and solid, expensive-looking -- to build it up by adding more pieces (with a plan for how they would be painted in mind!).

Keeping cactei and succulents outside during the summer.

All the succulents are hawortias, two retusas, one arachnoeida, one obtusa, one fasciata, one attentuata, one glauca(?)and one truncata. There are also some I do not know the name of. I also have an aloe.(torch resembling flowers, aristata?). All the cacteis are schlick hybrids. I will also recieve some gasterias the coming weeks. The rain can be very frequent and heavy as the atlantic weather systems hits straight on here every summer. The average percipitation for July is 5.07.

Hi Ann, Usually the plant will branch after it flowers. Some people cut their branches to make it branch out more, bur from what I read here on the forum, that delays the flowering, which is what most of us want. I read on here that you can help the flowering by the addition of a fertilizer in which the middle number is high. I think mine that I use is 10-50-10. I have also read that you want to stop feeding at approximately 90 days prior to the onset of the plant going dormant for the winter. After winter, when the plant wakes up, I read it is best to start off with a fertilizer that is higher on the first number. That promotes the growth, and then switch to the higher second number. As far as the time lines, I can't remember excatly when to switch. Someone smarter than me, and there are a bunch of them in here, will help you further. Hope that helps a little. John

Hi Love Pink, Yes, you should be able to hang ferns outside over summerÂbut not yet. IÂd say not until itÂs consistently around 50 or higher overnite, and, even then, be prepared to bring them in overnite if itÂs gonna get much colder. When you do want to put them out, slowly acclimate them to the direct sun. Put them out for maybe a half hour the first couple days, then up to an hour for a couple days, and gradually a little bit longer to be sure you donÂt burn them. TheyÂd recover, but theyÂd probably look really bad for quite a while if they got sunburned. (The leaves on most plants will turn white looking if they get sunburnedÂnot sure about a fern.) If you want to try something else, impatiens or begonias should work in the light conditions youÂre describingÂor coleus is another possibility. And for something trailing you could add some "vinca vine," the large leaf vinca (Vinca major) thatÂs sold with the bedding plants in spring. There are white variegated and yellow variegated ones that are real nice. Does your neighbor also have an eastern exposure? If so, ask what kinds of geraniums she/he uses. There are geraniums that work well in hanging basketsÂivy geraniums, etc.Âbut I think theyÂd need more than a couple hours of direct sun. Not sure about that! You also might want to watch closely for a couple days to see if youÂre getting more sun than you think you are. If so, it could be that the plants youÂve tried in the past didnÂt like how they were being watered, and adjusting watering might make you more successful. Almost all of them, EXCEPT for my Polyscias fruticosa, because it's windy here and they don't like that, and my Araucaria columnaris, because it... sunburns really easy and doesn't seem to like the heat much. Although I usually put it out in June a little, I guess.

All my Citrus, Gardenias, Brouvardia, some Palms, Jasmines,crown of throns, Jades for the first time, Plumerias, Clivias,Christmass cactus, Osmanthins frgrans, Cammelias, Hoyas, Orcahrds, and many succulents...

Only my citrus, if I happen to be growing any. All others stay inside where they thriv like gangbusters with the longer daylight hours. I'm not willing to put up with the leaf drop and critter problems so often associated with bringing plants in from an out door vacation. I've always considered it a negative, rather than a positive.

All of my succulent plants go outside in the summer, which appears to be finally nearing here. I greatly anticipate the better growing and the more intense colours that the long hours of daylight bring. I just have to remember to acclimate, acclimate, acclimate!

No long pants for two whole days now!

I put mostly all of mine outdoors for the summer.Lots of tropicals. They love the fresh air and their leaves cleaned of dust from the winter. This is my first year with Streptocarpus, I won't put these outdoors, they don't like the heat.

One of the best reasons to put your plants outside is to treat them to the beneficial insects
that will virtually eliminate most pest problems! In addition to the direct removal of pests, the
outdoor air and sun will increase the vitality of your plants, which stands them in good stead
against future pests, fungal infections, and the inevitable return to the dim, generally dry confines
of the house during the winter.
