Some comparisons and a bird!

Kalanchoe beharensis comparisons - not sure what the small one is called but also my "fang"...

Aloe 'peri-peri' now in full swing..

Aloe cryptopoda (A. wickensii v lutea) now flowering for first time - about 16 years old.

Some comparison again - these 2 A. thraskii were planted at the same time about 2m apart. First, the growth is new, not there over the past year and half. Someone said once that sometimes you get a plant that just does not grow like the others...case in point...

Those are beautiful plants! That weaver bird is a terrific addition! It think it would be really neat to have a colony of 'em right there on the spot! I hope, of course, they would find nesting material elsewhere!

Just so, here are they planted Feb 2011. More or less same size, but the smaller one also showing some stress here already....what a difference in a short time!

OMG ALEX!! Looking great!! I can't believe the size of everything!! Your yard has really taken off. Since i have seen pictures of you yard last. The plumies look great. You need to check the forum to see the stripping of mine here in VB. I have had a great year with mine. My palms are all doing well and growing like crazy.. I dont climb on the ladders anymore especially the big 16 footers now. I leave that to the son. My daughter just had her little one.., so i have been busy with that. all is well tho. I miss you at the other forum.. Hope to see you soon! I still check in here every so often. Seems like my palm pictures are the same, so it seems like i dont have anything new to offer... sigh. Thanks Panamajack! I live in NYC! Thanks Jim! I think we got our Saba's at about the same time and at the same size, but mine sounds like its a little smaller than yours (the soil here isnt as good as in the mid west and root space might have been a problem too). But its still grown a ton. The "trunk" on mine is about 4.5 feet and the tallest leaf is about 7 feet tall. I cant wait to see it this time next year! At this rate it will be probably 13 feet tall by next year! Thanks Protempsfish. The spindle is already barely fitting into the house. I have it in a room with a 10 foot ceiling and the top fronds are touching that. But I have another room with about a 20 foot celing. The lighting isnt perfect in there, but at least its high enough to keep the spindle palm doing well for several more years. Its a fast grower though! Thanks for looking everyone! -Alex

Bussdriver..contact Home Depot and get a copy of their Maintenance Solutions Catalog. It has complete exploded view breakdowns for almost all faucets with complete listing of the parts. I find that in many instances their catalog is faster than having the service manual. They also have Actual size illustrations of almost all faucet stems. You can actually take a stem out and lay it on the diagram for ID. Maintenance Solutions was formerly "Maintenance Warehouse" and primarily targeted their sales to Apartment and institutional maintenance departments. The catalogs are as big as a large phone book, about 1500 pages and cover every aspect of maintenance from paint to millwork, including , HVAC, Plumbing, irrigation, Electrical, lighting, general and specialty hardware, tools, janitorial supplies, pool supplies, paints and sundries related to painting, appliances, and even hospitality. If you set up an account with Maintenance Solutions you can call in an order by 4pm one day and its delivered UPS the next, or you can elect to pick it up at your local HD the next day.

I would take him to your closest wildlife rehab place, and ASK them what they will do. Ours never euthanizes anything until after their vet has looked at them, and they go to extraordinary lengths to save all animals. I turned in a common crow once, and they gave me updates as to its condition every 2 days, did surgery on it, and it survived and was released. Jackie

OoEeee, nice plants, Rian! In the 1st pic, is it K. 'Napolean's Cap'? The 2nd pic plants look like K. 'Oak Leaf' to me. Nice 'Fang' & xG. 'Fred Ives'! I'm chuckling about the bird stealing your ponytail palm leaves for the nest. Nope, never heard of a Weaver bird! Thanks for my LSNFT item!

Loved all the Aloes! I think I'd better get my crytopoda in the ground. You waited SIXTEEN years for these first blooms??? Yikes! I'll be dead before I see some, at that rate! Yowser-what a difference in growth on those thraskii!

Thanks Ferocactus.

Rosemary - will come back to you on Kalanchoe. The aloe is a estimation, but I have it for 8 years and it was a proper plant by the time I got it (I got 2, the other still has not flowered) - I do have seedlings, and they are very slow growing, slower than 80% of the other seedling species. Lets make it 13-16 years.

Roro beat me to it, and probably did it from memory, but I second what she's said, with respect to les Kalanchoes. That bit about bum feathers somewhere, though, has me concerned.

And the Aloes are some of my favourites. What's this 'peti-peti' though? Sounds like a Parisian dessert.

Quite love that first Kalanchoe! That shade of green and the leaf shape are impeccable. But all are lovely. Really enjoyed seeing them.

Hi, Yes Rosemarie & Jeff, I agree with Kalanchoe's.

The peri-peri is a hybrid made here, and also shows what I believe is a difference between us and US market - designer plants (US) vs designer flowers (SA). I rarely see any funny looking miniature aloes, but there is a big market for aloes that mass flowers or flower longer or have multi-colour flowers. Just a theory.

Well, that theory of consumer Aloe wants is most interesting, indeed. And unlike any other place in the world, the plant authorities in the RSA might not want 'merkin Aloes in the plant's native land (and I can understand why). Can you imagine the sheer terror which would arise if Aloe 'Pepe' took over The Cape? I shudder as I write this, thinking of that.

Just a theory. I think it might be more similar towards Johannesburg - maybe. I do have aloe quicksilver, so I guess there may be more around.
