Allow me to introduce myself....

Hello all,

Being new to gardening, I have found that there are so many things to learn. WSing will be my newest endeavor. Seems like I've made this discovery just in time to join in the fun!

I've read some of the archives and haven't seen many people in my neck of the woods. Is there anyone WSing in Western Oregon, or am I some sort of oddity? If there is anyone in the area, I would like to put myself up for adoption...I would be a loyal and knowledge hungry apprentice :-)

I'll admit I've been lurking for a couple weeks. I began feeling a little creepy, so I though I should speak up :-) You all have (unbeknownst to you!) taught me so much already, and I can't wait to learn more...and perhaps eventually share my findings with others.

I will be growing lots of vegetables (just seems practical), but I LOVE flowers, so I'm sure they will play a huge role in this experiment. I have the veggie seeds, but are there any stores selling flower seeds this time of year?

Well, the sun just came out...I'm headed outside!

First, head over to GW's seed trading forum. Why buy when you can trade?

Or, if you have to have them now, there are a variety of online stores to purchase from.

and others can elaborate. Personally, I like trading. It lets me interact with others who share my obsession.

Welcome! Bakemom's newbie seed project is still going. Be sure to contact her for free newbie seeds. Wintersown.org also offers seeds, and in addition to trading on the seed exchange forum, a number of people there offer seeds in exchange for the price of postage back to you. Look for the words SASBE or SASE.

Two other cheap places to get seeds are valueseeds.com and Crosman's

Thank you for those tips! "So, a shrub that will be 4' wide at maturity needs to be planted "on center" at least 3' from the house, preferably more, and it will therefore outgrow your 41" really fast." Hmm- I thought that the azelea was a wee bit close to the house itself- wonder if that has to do with it's "stunted" growth. I just think it should be a bit bigger at this point- assuming that was planted at the same time as the rhodo. "I'm jealous of your nearly blank slate - you just have a few things to work around, and that's really lucky for you, in some ways." Hahaha..well that was a mistake to say the least. We *had* evergreen shrubs that flanked the steps and last week I decided that I was tired of them being little tinderboxes inside- the only parts that were green were the outside skin so to speak- so I decided to thin out the inside. Hmm..well this one wasn't paying attention as it was getting late and I was tired- and SNIP--opps a wee bit too high and so I had this HUGE hole n the front- yeah so I decided to trim the up to the hole and they became scary looking Candy Land trees..oops! Ahh- live and learn. Of course I hated them anyways to be honest part of me is glad they are gone and I now have the blank slate that you speak of. Widening BITH sides would be key- and I think it would look exceptionally nice on the rhodo side- a nice waterfall effect of such with plantings- plus it would make my life easier when I mow the grass- I always get all the bees and yellow jackets angry when I run the mower under the bush--hmm... I was also thinking of using some landscape timbers- almost raise the bed a bit just to make the edges a bit more crisp- especially by the walkway a nice "wall"- plus it would make my husband happy NOT to have plants right up against the house. I have great soil which I am thankful for so I would keep the bottom unlined and just do the sides with the paper. Oh so much to do so much to do- and I just found out yesterday I am hosting Easter dinner- Yipes thanks for the warning!! ;-) Well I guess it won't be done before relatives come over- was shooting for early summer to have this done in time for a family cookout. Oh well! I'll keep you posted with before/during/after pics. But of course as you all know there really isn't such thing as an "after" pic- maybe I shall say before/during/work-in-progress pics instead!

Hi Stephanie, I am so very sorry for your loss and I feel the pain you and your family are going through. I have been there before with a special feline friend that I had for 13 years and it is painful. Currently, I have been blessed with a very special, extraordinary canine family member that I love beyond words. I have had him for 5 years now and he is my best friend and brings me enormous joy. The thought of his passing makes my heart hurt and brings tears to my eyes. I am certain the reality will be completely devastating. Your story made my eyes water. Again, heartfelt sympathy for your loss. The memorial is a wonderful idea...for many reasons !!! I do agree with Barb...don't be in too much of a hurry to get it done NOW. I am also somewhat of a novice, which is how I came across this forum yesterday. RESEARCH is the key to success !!! There are so many factors involved and if you don't do the "homework" chances are good that many of your efforts, not to mention the cost will be in vain. There is alot of information to be had here and I am sure you will get some valuable advice and suggestions. In addition, check the web. Just search for EXACTLY what you are looking for and presto, there it will be...eventually. Ha-Ha!!! A suggestion for you that I found extremely helpful, check out the Texas Cooperative Extension (through A&M) for your area. I can't send you a link, because mine is for Bexar county. There I found everything I wanted to know and then some (finally). Size, color, planting instructions, pests and disease, drought and freeze tolerance, growth habits and pictures too !!! I printed out a page that gave me 30 choices(customized) of flower with all of the pertinent info. included...PRICELESS !!! A few years ago I planted a LOVELY garden in my front courtyard. LONG story short, a lot of thought went into this masterpiece of mine. Trouble was that I was going for the VISUAL. Let me just say that it wasn't nearly enough and the longevity wasn't there and yes, I did use all perrenials !!! So that this loving tribute will last for years to come....do your homework. It will take some time, so be patient. It is spring,I am in a beautiful new home(blank canvas)I want to plant NOW. I learned my lesson the hard way, so now, I am INDOORS doing my homework !!!! Your motivation for your garden is much more important than just wanting to see the pretty flowers, so take your time. That in itself can be a form of tribute too, not to mention therapeutic!!!! Good luck and give updates !!!

Hi guys! Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. Joe, I think you're spot-on (if you'll pardon the pun!); I did some research on early blight and it looks exactly like what I have on my leaves. I'm concerned about cutting off the entire leaves though- that'll be half of them!! Do you suppose I could just cut off the spotted parts first? I guess it's worth a shot, at least. No, I don't top water, but my topsy-turvy strawberry planter (which, I might add, is crap!) is directly above it, which I suppose amounts to the same thing. I'll see if I can find another spot for it, though that may be tricky with the space I'm working with! Damon & Colo. Springs: I think you may be right. My mix does seem to be very water-retentive. I think I'll try watering a little less; the plants have quadrupled in size since I've put them in so I'm sure they must have pretty well-established root systems by now, so as you pointed out, I may simply have to live with it. I had no idea I should use so much bark in my mix- I'd never have thought of that! Well, at least it's better than my first try at container growing tomatoes-- I had a Big Boy in an 8 inch by 8 inch container with nothing but topsoil... so I'm improving! :p

Hi, Pauled99, I am not sure I understood your question exactly. It may be easiest for me to try to explain it in my terms. Both vertical pipes from the basement serve the same purpose they did originally. I just crossed them left-to-right before they came up from the basement. The leftmost copper pipe, which extends vertically from the basement and makes a right-angle turn to become horizontal and enters the galvanized tee in its middle port, only vents a sink in a bathroom in the basement. Obviously, the horizontal section is well above the flood rim of the basement fixture. The right copper pipe comes up from the basement, turns 90 deg to the right to become a horizontal drain (sloped at 1/4" per foot), turns vertical, and is teed into the stub-out for the kitchen sink with a sanitary tee. Above this tee, it is now considered a vent. It then turns 45 deg (remaining a "vertical" vent), and then turns 45 deg the other way to go into the bottom port of the galvanized tee. The vertical galvanized pipe vents both the basement and kitchen fixtures. In the basement, the two downpipes are joined by a sanitary wye below the point where the bathroom fixture joins the left-hand downpipe. The single drain then goes below the basement floor to join the main (?) house sewer line. After that picture was taken, I put steel plates over the stud notches to protect the pipes from screws/nails. The plumbing inspector took a look at the work, *briefly* thought about squawking about the galvanized tee before realizing it was strictly a vent at that point, and then admired the job and gave it a thumbs-up. If this explanation is not clear, feel free to ask a follow-up question. What I learned during this process is that the plumbing codes actually make sense, even if not at first to the uninitiated. For example, as a novice, I would have turned the drain for the sink vertically instead of horizontally, and teed it into the horizontal drain line. However, that would have made the section to the right of that tee into an illegal horizontal vent. Stuff that goes down the sink could splash to the right (i.e., upstream). Since there is no water flow there to wash it down, it could get lodged there and obstruct the vent. This was not obvious to the tyro, but makes sense to me now. Again, a thousand thanks to lazypup.

Hello and welcome!

Swallowtail garden seeds is another good online seed place, and their shipping is reasonable. Valueseeds is the big bargain one, though! I love seed trading, and the big group swaps on the Round Robin forum, so I too recommend getting into that.

If you want a 2-page brochure that has a decent summary of wintersowing, I made one up and can email it to you. Just email me.

If you see things at T&M that you like, be sure to go to www.valueseeds.com to see if they are on sale there. That's where they sell their surplus.

Also, T&M usually has a 1/2 price sale in June - so planning ahead can help you get your store bought seeds at some really good prices. Not as good a price as seed trading or some of the generous Garden Webbers free offers, of course. :)

Katie, don't overlook your local nurseries too - many sell seeds and are grateful for your business. If they don't have seeds displayed now, they'll have them back out as soon as they have put Christmas things away, in plenty of time to winter sow.

And yes, there are others from PNW here who sow in winter :), I'm a 8b where you are 8a, less winter ice, more rain.

Hi Katie, I live in the Gresham area. Been WS for a few years now. It works great here in Oregon. I've tried so many different seeds than the regular plants you get from nurseries around here. I get so many questions like---What's that plant? If you have any particular Q's send them my way if you want. Don't know if I'll have an answer, but will let you know what I know. If you take a look at my trade list, it will give you an idea wht I've been able to grow here.
