Sitting here wishing you all a good morning. Listening to the wind go crazy out there and feeling the cold air creeping in.

Glad I spared at least my babies from this and put them in the shed.

Is anybody else hauling plants in and out? Or am I alone this time? Come on...you usually don't let me be the only one lol

Can you believe though, that the month is already over? Man the older you get the faster time seems to go by.

Which is a good thing. Brings spring faster for us then the young folks roflmao

rofl you know Margaret, I HAD to come back and see who else is up already when I saw the 1 posting.

I will safe the urge to go outside until it warms up again. Even let DH go get the paper when he wakes up.

Well I guess I got used to the texas weather. Cause I sure do not like the cold anymore and act like a whimp lol

Hiya AZbookworm and all, I grow a lot of cacti and succulents in containers and they do great year round. When it comes to leafy/flowery things like petunias, lobelia and geraniums, I DO grow a lot of them (full sun) autumn, winter, spring and early summer when I can get a nice long 8 or 9 month season of blooms from them. When it gets blast furnace hot, I do cut back quite a bit and put many of the pots I use for flowery things in storage. I still grow some flowery things in summer like vincas, but not nearly as many pots as in autumn, winter and spring. Something like vincas in a pot in full sun will want water almost every day in mid-summer. If I head out of town for work or vacation, I run a temporary automatic irrigation line to those pots and then hope for the best. The main framework of my pots is cacti and succulents, with lots of leafy blooming things in the cool months, and then just a pot or two of leafy blooming things in summer. Ok gals, we have a few days left in February to work on our goals. Next month we'll have 3 more days so start thinking about the next list of goals. Great going, Salijo!!! I am so proud of you! love2quilt, Good job on making and surpassing your goal list! I think you need to add to it next month. *smile* Bonnie, As I find bits and pieces or even little blocks already made up from when just playing around, I now think "CRUMBS" woooohoooo You think your dog will know the pillow is not a toy after you cover it??? You're fortunate to live close enough to your mother for visiting. Give her an extra hug from me the next time you see her. My UFO's are sadly neglected, but I have at least one thing done on my list and might be able to start another. I hope to have 6 things done on my New list by the end of the week and have completed a Comfort Winnie quilt (32"X45") and also a Bunnies and Bears (45"X58") quilt for great-granddaughter that weren't on my list...pic's in the Gallery. to: Annie Delghnaugh You mentioned that maybe folks endured more in the past. The frontier was very hard on women especially at birthing time afterward. I did not tell all of Phoebe Mccoy's story. Phoebe's mother, after loosing her first husband during a voyage he took back to Scotland. His ship was never heard of again and presumed lost the Altantic ocean Phoebe' mother married again (after 7 years) in Kentucky to an older man and they followed the Franklins to TN. She was 39 at her second marriage and bore 4 more children - Whoa. He died and she married for a 3rd time and outlived that man also. Phoebe married John Brown in TN and with young children, moved to southern Illinois. Family legend says that they walked a considerable part of that journey carrying a 2 yr old boy. When in snake infested locations, they wrapped their draft animal's legs in burlap to protect from snake bite. There's no way of substantiating how much of this legend is true. We do know that the little boy was 2 yr old and that legging wraps was a precaution. During that period, schooling was spotty especially for males engaged in farming. I estimate that at least half of my male ancestors were illiterate from the proliferation of "X" s with witness signatures on legal papers. A man's main tools for establishing a homestead was an axe, adz, splitting wedges, saw, and rifle. If lucky, he also had wood boring augers and a grinding wheel. When building a crude cabin, he used marks on his axe handle for measuring. The woman of the house was expected to make meals from meager supplies. She might have a bag of corn meal, salt, pepper, grease saved from prior meat fryings, and honey. There could have been cured meats or fresh game or fish. After a homestead was established, she might have a garden, but it was fight to keep the local animals from eating it. One had to be in good health to survive. People did suffer due to lack of dental and medical doctors. After a rudimentary village was established, there might be a dentist or doctor available, but most farmers did not have the money to pay for their services. The tendency was to tough it out until you got better or were in an emergency condition.

We may have just had two more inches of snow, and three feet on the ground, but it's spring and summer indoors. I haven't named it yet, but this is a baby pomegranate tree, about six weeks old. It's in a 2 1/2 pot, receiving sunlight at the window and artificial light from sunset to bedtime and my wakeup time until the sun strikes it. It's just sprouted from a pomegranate seed from a pomegranate from the grocery store for sheer fun and I have no expectations for it. The Ageratum That Will Not Die. Fed organically (20%) and synthetically, it just keeps blooming more nicely as the winter wears on. A "struggling" tropical hibiscus started in...November, I think? Named "Brandy." That's her individual name, not the cultivar. She was struggling a bit, but has recovered recently with keeping the soil moist (there's some cyanobacteria mats on the soil right now), and feeding a lot more than I normally would in February since she's under lights 18 hours a day.

Good morning all! Lucy, that hibiscus is a beauty. I love the way the white comes through in the middle. I won't tell you guys about our weather, but just to say that I have my brug cuttings outside all the time.

I did a bit of clean up yesterday and sad to say, I've lost quite a few of the brug cuttings :-( I think next winter I will not try cuttings, but instead when weather is good will just stick them in the ground -- they might have a better chance of survival than my rooting over winter.

Dorothy your weather is even worse then ours. Even thou I had to move everything in the shed again too. Then I just covered some seedlings popping out of the ground, canna's and other newly sprouted perennials up with pots and milk jugs. Even the Dats are growing along with some brugs I had left in the ground.

Gross my fingers for ALL of us that have bad weather again after thinking we had spring already. Man were we dreaming or what lol.

The wind is here SO bad that it had knicked off lots and lots of leaves from the Candida double white huge brug on the patio. Is back inside again. I should have left it outside and rather loose some leaves then limbs lol. DH would not listen that he has to watch it too when we carried it in and so it went :-(

Eloise you know if YOU come and say you got to move it in, then the weather really goes downhill for the whole world. I mean someone got to get a headstart with the angel babies right!

You know I have talked to many folks and many have lost lots of cuttings. I am with you. The best success rate of rooting and growing a cutting into a brug plant was when I let a side shoot or what have you grow out long enought to make a cutting out of it and pot it up in the summer, put it in a pot in a shady place and voila...Success!!

Barb yes it is a pretty one but you know that one has shown the slowest growth from the 5 I have.

Oh gosh not long and that number will be up to 15 lol
