I love old pics and beautiful moms. I'll try to post my dear late Mom and Dad. I miss them so much!

Here's a pic from way back, when I was just a twinkle in my mother's eye. She's the young gal in the bottom row. The woman 2nd from right is my great grandmother and the woman 4th from the right is my grandmother.

I'm enjoying all these photos! This is me around 1970 with my stepmother, Marion ("Mama"). When she passed on at age 85 she had been my mother for 42 years.

I love love all these pictures being posted and what a perfect day for this. Here's my story..

Yes, my Mom always dressed fashionably. Collected so many clothes over the years I was overwhelmed when I had to deal with them all. I still have some. Unfortunately I didn't inherit her fashion sense and dress for comfort only. I can't walk in heels!

Another picture of mom, daddy built her that swing. She was happy. I miss both of them. Love this thread! Great tribute to our moms.

We lost most of our old photos in a house fire when I was 5. This is a picture of my Aunt Alice (and my twin sister & me), who was like a second mother to us. She had no children of her own and my mom was busy with 3 boys under the age of 6. I think it was summer 1952.

Your mom and dad look TALL in that photo! Might just be me - I'm 5'1.5" (yes the half inch IS important! Ask any short person!) my mom 5'4", dad 5'8, and brother 5'10. We're a short family. :P

ETA: just my contribution. Thinking outside the box. Since my mom was born in in 1942. I don't have a picture as early as the majority. Alidande is closest. Still doesn't compare.

I have no pics of my mom in her younger years either as they disappeared long ago.

Jennifer D, yes they were tall then shrank, as I too am shrinking, almost 60. Stretching every day is a good thing.

Ravencajun, your mom looks much like mine, posing in her shorts, except mine on a fancy old Plymouth back in the day. She was always posing! Even wearing shorts in the snow. (Tried to find and post more pics--didn't work) So funny, I know am not adopted but I so hate to be photographed and wear revealing clothes.

rob, my mom's favorite gift was a truckload of composted manure for the garden, which she got every Mother's day in addition to pretty things. Looks like you did some Serious gardening today!

Man, how come everyone else got to have tall parents, probably even turned out tall themselves!? I'd tell my parents I want a genetic do-over but it's kind of late in the game to try that one. :P

Phoebe (McCoy) Brown

A pioneer Wife and Mother Who came to Illinois in 1828.

b. 1791 in NC

d. Christmas Day, 1874, in Edwards Co, IL while visiting her widowed daughter.

Our family owes much to this Lady. She lost her father when she was about 6 yr old, traveled through Boone Gap via wagon train with the her mother and the Franklin(s). The Franklin(s) went on to Winchester, TN to settle. Her mother stopped in KY for a year or two picking up another husband, and then followed the Franklin(s) to TN.

She was born before photography existed. She lived a long life, long enough to see the development of photography and sat for her portrait probably at Olney, IL possibly in the 1850s. The image above came from a "tin type".

Wow jemdandy! What a wonderful family treasure to have a photo that old and in such great shape! Don't know if they were tougher back then, or if they were because they had to be.

I still remember my Dad's Mom, who came home from having abdominal surgery and the doctor told her to take it easy. So my Mom called her to check in and make sure she was taking it easy. Grandma said, oh yes, I'm just scrubbing down the kitchen walls!!!

I was gone for the weekend, so just catching up. What a collection of beautiful ladies!

My lovely Mom.

I guess I didn't notice the reflection, taking a picture of a picture, lol. My Mom will turn 85 in June and we almost lost her over Christmas. She had been misdiagnosed as having pneumonia, when she actually had a pulmonary embolism in her whole left lung. Recovery has been slow, she still is quite short of breath, but I am just grateful to have her with us!

sleeper, it doesn't detract. She's lovely to look at. Sounds lovely that you still get to be with her too!

This is one of my mothers favorite photos, taken about 1946? We used it with her centerpiece at her 90th birthday last month. Lunch yesterday almost a little bitter sweet. We still have her with us, but I see her getting so frail these last months. Severe osteoporosis, and such diminished hearing conversations can be difficult even with her newest technology hearing aids.

Jennifer D - not everyone has tall parents - my Mom was 4'11" and my Dad was 5'6". I am under 5'. :-)

My mother and me on my wedding day, May 16, 1981. She died in my arms in 1998. I still miss her so bad it hurts sometimes. She was a wonderful, caring woman.

I love seeing all these great photos! This is my mom when she was 32. She died at 47 so I only had her around for 25 years. She's been gone longer than I actually knew her and I still miss her terribly.

This is me and my two kids, ages 32 and 29 yesterday for Mother's Day They were 12 and 9 when I started hanging out at the KT.

You mentioned that maybe folks endured more in the past. The frontier was very hard on women especially at birthing time afterward. I did not tell all of Phoebe Mccoy's story. Phoebe's mother, after loosing her first husband during a voyage he took back to Scotland. His ship was never heard of again and presumed lost the Altantic ocean Phoebe' mother married again (after 7 years) in Kentucky to an older man and they followed the Franklins to TN. She was 39 at her second marriage and bore 4 more children - Whoa. He died and she married for a 3rd time and outlived that man also.

Phoebe married John Brown in TN and with young children, moved to southern Illinois. Family legend says that they walked a considerable part of that journey carrying a 2 yr old boy. When in snake infested locations, they wrapped their draft animal's legs in burlap to protect from snake bite. There's no way of substantiating how much of this legend is true. We do know that the little boy was 2 yr old and that legging wraps was a precaution.

During that period, schooling was spotty especially for males engaged in farming. I estimate that at least half of my male ancestors were illiterate from the proliferation of "X" s with witness signatures on legal papers.

A man's main tools for establishing a homestead was an axe, adz, splitting wedges, saw, and rifle. If lucky, he also had wood boring augers and a grinding wheel. When building a crude cabin, he used marks on his axe handle for measuring.

The woman of the house was expected to make meals from meager supplies. She might have a bag of corn meal, salt, pepper, grease saved from prior meat fryings, and honey. There could have been cured meats or fresh game or fish. After a homestead was established, she might have a garden, but it was fight to keep the local animals from eating it.

One had to be in good health to survive. People did suffer due to lack of dental and medical doctors. After a rudimentary village was established, there might be a dentist or doctor available, but most farmers did not have the money to pay for their services. The tendency was to tough it out until you got better or were in an emergency condition.

With two of my grand kids, Eli and Emma. For years, Eli would run over and see if he was taller than her yet, he finally shot past her.

She died in February at 88, this was my first Mother's Day without her.
