Gravel mulch discoloration in patched- how to fix?

Our gravel mulch tends to get discolored in patches, it seems to be related to moisture seeping up- this is a common problem I see in most if not all "graveled" yards around here. We have drip irrigation and it's pretty well controlled- infrequent long, slow cycles, no pooling, etc...

Walking around on the gravel when the soil is wet also contributes, I think- basically the gravel gets mashed down into the soil.

Obviously more targeted irrigation and keeping off wet gravel is the best option, but is there a standard procedure that readers use to deal with this? Raking seems to make a mess (maybe it's poor technique?) , and while I could dig the gravel out and use some sort screen, that would be a pretty involved process considering the amount of gravel we're dealing with. It was pretty thin when we moved in but I've spread about ten additional tons so the depth should be adequate.

Any advice?
