I don't know the ID of this begonia but it is similar to one that I have. I find this type of stem, I call it hairy, roots pretty easy in soil. Just keep it a little damp, not wet. Hope this helps. Nancy retsec

1. You cannot root leaves from cane-like begonias. Actually, you can sometimes make them root, but they will never produce a new plant. Other types of begonias, yes, definitely, but not canes (angel wings). Most of us, hearing that it's impossible, have tried it, just to see if we could do it when no one else could. :) 2. ALL begonias are fibrous rooted. I don't know where that distinction originally came from. 3. To clarify the issue of pruning canes, you are partially right about pruning above a node which has flowered. If you prune at that point, the plant won't produce a new shoot from that node, but it will produce shoots from lower nodes which haven't flowered. Look for a leaf bud at the node which will grow in an outward direction. That will give you the best shape. Additionally, if you make a cutting to root, be sure to bury at least one node with a leaf bud. If you only bury a node that has flowered, the cutting won't have any way to produce new shoots from the soil. Elizabeth

Cane begonias are usually very easy to take care of. Bright light and water as needed (do not keep sopping wet or totally dry in other words) and you will have a great plant. The only issue I have with canes are some can be attacked by mildew in cooler temps. Spray with a fungicide before bringing indoors (if you grow them outside in warmer months) and you should be good to go. Growing under lights will also reward you with great foliage and usually blooms (some require tons of bright light to bloom if at all) when it is ready.

If your indoor temps are 70-ish, then you don't need bottom heat (sometimes bottom heat speeds up rot IMO). You shouldn't need hormone powder either but it won't hurt to use it. I don't like vermiculite because it seems to "pack down" after a while but some folks like it for rooting/seed starting. You should use perlite if you want to go with a sterile rooting medium. What kind of potting mix are you using if you get a lot of rot? Is it a heavy mix? Water rooting works pretty good but you have to keep the water somewhat fresh. One thing I noticed on my most recent cuttings is the very succulent parviflora showed some rot at the bottom node after sitting in water for a day or two. I should have known better by letting these fleshy stems heal over before putting in water or potting mix. All the other canes I cut showed no problem whatsoever after sitting in water for the same period. I finally got around to putting them all in soil so it is just a waiting game now. Make sure you have a couple of nodes that have a growing tip (read Brad's Begonia World tips on propagation). Cut off most of the leaves (in fact I sometimes cut all the leaves off if they are damaged).
