Angel wing begonia rooting in water or soil

I have a spotted angel wing begonia that I bought from my school's plant sale in may. I love it, but it had gotten a little leggy since moving it inside for the winter, so I took two cuttings of it. I have them in water with some Christmas cactus cuttings. I've never had much success rooting in soil. I'm kind of ashamed to say it because I'm majoring in horticulture, but I've had success rooting in soil once or twice over several years. this is with rooting hormone/ gel, different soil mixes, bottom heat, different light levels, etc. it just doesn't happen. however, I'm reading some stuff that says that they root practically overnight in soil. I've had a decent amount of success rooting in water with no hormone (not begonias, but kalanchoes and other similar plants). Im not sure if it's best for them to be in soil. I can't find my heat mat, but my house thermostat is at 70 degrees. I don't have hormone powder right now but I can get some. would sticking these in vermiculite root them faster, even without the bottom heat?
