I hate vacations! (well, sort of)

Hi everyone,

I just came back from an 8 day road trip to the midwest (weather was lovely, cool, and humid--I even got to wear a sweater, something I haven't done since my last trip to Flagstaff, LOL). Anyway, as usual, the entire time up to the trip was spent with me fretting over my garden. It happens any time I head out of town on a road trip for work, or for a vacation. What about you?

What do you worry about? What do you do about it?

I fret especially during warm weather. I'm a huge cactus and succulent nut, so there are few worries with those, thank goodness, but even though I tell myself NO LEAFY PLANTS unless plugged in to the drip irrigation system, I still end up with several of them in the ground and in pots. I bring the pots indoors so they're usually fine (though they can get cranky if I'm away on long trips), but I always end up with leafy plants in the ground that aren't on drips. It's like an addiction, LOL.

Do you have the same problem? Or at least the same worries? I hate it, LOL. I've tried cheap auto-waterers for containers (last one leaked), and friends (the last was a light waterer and then got scared of a snake and skipped the last two days, grumble). What about you??

This last trip last week worked out great, mostly because I've worked hard to get extra lines in my watering system so things like my many citrus trees were hooked up, plus some other plants too. Buuuuut, I did put in a small section of mini oleanders recently and I was worried about those. I ended up buying some of those ooze-tube slow-drip tree waterers (basically a big plastic bag that you attach a small drip-emmitter to; they're used for slow-watering of new trees but I thought I could attach spaghetti irrigation tubing and use it to water new plants). That worked out great, as did those blown glass water globes indoors on the houseplants, but it's always a stress. Do you get the same way?

The last thing I do before heading out is to water the garden, and the first thing I do is water/check on the garden too. I'd love to hear if anyone else deals with the same feelings.

I'm happy to report the garden looks great and everything thrived, but I have to be diligent with myself! :) Some wonderful leafy surprises were that my *established* emu bushes (Eremophila) and *established* penstemons and lantanas didn't miss me a bit.

I go up to Canada every year for a few weeks or more!!! and upon returning from my first trip north to find my very large 6ft prickley pear laying across the patio and my aspg ferns looking like hanging straw I have learned to just let go ...and head straight to the nearest nursery.
we lived in a apt then I could not believe it !!! I asked my husband (who was suppose to be watering things)why he did not water ?? ...he said "But it rained!!" Oh I'm sure it rained but these plants were UNDER a patio!!!
what part of ..plant lying on ground...looks like it got water!!!SHEEESH
the next year we had a house and not that I didn't trust my sweetheart but by this time I had some really nice plants sssoooo I loaded up my truck and took them over to a good green thumb friend. they all survived.I did that for a couple of years.
now that I have almost everything on drip or they are established enough to take some stress I can leave them all here and most survive But there are always a few casualties. I take stock and .....head straight to the local nursery.
Its the circle of life....and the only time my husband does not say anything when I arrive with a bunch of new plants!!!!HEEHEE

Thanks for the reply--it's good to hear I'm not the only one who frets. That's funny about your husband not watering the plants under cover. Funny but sad too. It's neat you can drop off some of your special potted plants at a green thumbed friends. I'm envious, LOL.

I have a wall-mounted planter with coco/moss lining and an asparagus fern it in. I totally forgot to bring it in, but it actually did great last week. When I potted it I cheated and lined the coco with a plastic shopping bag with a few holes in it and then added soil/plant, so that may have helped, but I'm impressed it didn't croak.

A couple people have emailed me privately about the ooze tube things. I'm adding a link to one so folks can see what they are. I just bought them at a big hardware store and attached spaghetti irrigation line to the drip emitter that comes with the ooze tube.

Anyone else get nervous about their plants when traveling?

When I was a teenager, my mother thought chipmunks were cute. My Aunt next door cut down on the amount of cats & Mom was feeding them (the tree rats). The next thing we knew, there were chipmunks EVERYWHERE. Dozens of them, digging up all the bulbs & everything we planted. Emptying all the bird feeders. Running & playing & most of all multiplying. My Uncles were poisoning, trapping & shooting them until they finally got down to a manageable number. In later years, I had a Sheltie who thought it was her job to be on chipmunk patrol & she took it very seriously & kept them away. My Newf isn't that excited over such a small mouthfull but we have an Eskie who likes organic dog toys (mice & such are organic cat toys). Linda

I want to thank you all for replying to my post. It was very generous of you to take the time to help me with this decision. You all made some great points for me to consider. Looks like we'll be putting it on the market but I thought I would address some of the comments in your posts at this point: Play up what 'spoke' to us when we bought it issue: That's gonna be tough. I dare say I do hate EVERYTHING about this place: but I know that can't be entirely true. Mostly is though! I'll give it that it has a pretty good floor plan and a nice neighborhood. Period. Why did we buy it? Well we had a list of things we wanted the new house to have and this one had many of them, when we looked at the list on paper and put checkmarks next to it, it looked ok. i.e. 2 car att garage, 4 bedrooms, office, screen porch, playroom...Plus basically had the square footage we wanted for our family of 5, a nice quiet neighborhood, and was in the school district we were trying to get into, which was our #1 priority and could close in time (#2priority). That's about it. Nothing of the actual house itself spoke to us, other than to say" you'll need to fix this , clean that, update this, repair that"....ad nauseum. It had been neglected by previous owners and showed its wear and tear but we thought it had the bones to work with and once we put "our mark on it, it would be nice" and we'd be in a good school district. I remember saying that. We had left a lovely new house that I had drawn the plans for and needed nothing done but was in a poor school district. After the move I sunk into a very deep depression which I have been able with much effort to scratch and crawl my way out of but as a result I think I'll forever resent this hellhole since it robbed me of a couple years when I was depressed. We have done a lot of improvements and in fact it is considered by most (not me) to be quite nice. It is nice but I am too emotionally tied to hating it to ever see it as really nice. We could stay and continue working on it since there are a few mre things we'd like to do. The only thing is the more we do, though in a way it helps, in another way it just reminds me of what a mistake we made by buying it in the first place. The $30,000 lost issue: I think I was referring to the fact that the market has depreciated by that much here so I was seeing it as a loss IF we move but I agree with the point that it's actually already lost! I had never thought of it that way. Thanks for pointing that out. The can we afford to move question: I'd say that's the million dollar question. And the answer is a definite yes but with some caveats. We'll be paid off here within 9 years. Oldest will be starting college in 6 years. If we move, we'd need to go back up to a 15 year mortgage and payments would be about the same as now. Yikes, I am very frugal and paying a mortgage for an extra 6 years is a tough pill to swallow. Tougher even than the Prozac maybe! We have lots of friends who have lovely houses and 30 yr mortgages but I can't handle that, though we could have one S W E E T !!! house if I could. Not in the cards for me or my DH since I hate debt. a 15 yr mortgage again will be a little tough to take but less so than living here where I'm unhappy. And you know what they say: "If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!" Life is short issue: Sure is which is why we are planning on selling. It's a tough market and we're only willing to lower the price such that we can get a nicer place with a 15 yr mortgage. We won't go so low on price here that would necessitate us getting a 30 yr mortgage for any new place. That would definitely make me resent any new place such that I'd be in the same boat as now. Hopefully we'll get lucky and be able to sell with not too big a loss. So, have I mentioned that I have a lovely house to sell????? LOL

I feel the same way about my husband's exwife. I am custodial stepmom of 3 chlldren. My husband has always had custody because the exwife decided one day she no longer wanted to be married or a full-time mother. Before I came along she constantly dumped 99% of her time on my husband, he of course never said no, she had full control of her old household only she lived in a differnt place and had her own life. It was a very unhealthy situation. My husband just never stood up to her, he struggled to keep a full-time job and take care of 3 children. I give him tremendous credit because many men in his situation would not be able to take on that responsibilty. Well, then I come along, we get married and all of a sudden she begins to take a deeper interest. Mainly because I would not allow her to control my household and my husband began saying "no", She always used us as her babysitter, whether it was a work meeting, an exerecise class or a European vacation. She has been nothing but a major PIA, she wouldn't pay child support when my husband enforced the order she opened a full blown custody case, suing us for full custody because she did not want to financially support her children. We also have a screwed up schedule. During the school the chldren visit their mother Mon&Tues 4-8pm with alternating weekends. During the summer they visit her Mon-Wed 4-8pm with alternating weekends. The exwife wanted some crazy, they live with her 3days one week, then us 4days, and the next week it was the reverse. Mind you, she only had a 2bedroom condo. All three children sleep in the same bedroom. 2 girls 13&10 and a 8yr old boy. The master had enough sense to reconize that the living arrangemnents were not appropriate and would not grant anymore overnight visits except for the already standing 2 weekends a month. The schedule is crazy. The exwife is crazy. She teaches the children it is ok to lie to us. She is NOT supportative of myself or my husband. She has harrassed us to the point that she is not allowed on our property, she can not contact us by phone, she may only communicate via email, unless it is an emergency related to that day's schedule, then she may leave a message on our cell phone. She would call my husband at work and pull him out of meetings with the CEO of the company for some nonsense question. HE would get numerous calls on a daily basis. I never saw 2 divorced people talk on a daily basis. We have insulated ourselves as much as possible but everyday there is some new issue. She never returns clothes that the kids wear over there, one day she sent my ss home with no shoes on. She won't take the kids to baseball games and then tells them we did not give her the information. I could go on and on. But your words say it best I HATE HER!!!!! If I had hindsight my posting would be alot differnt. I would be like that one woman who used to be involved with a man with children. Trying being involved with a man who has custody of his children. The rewards have been few and far between. I have lived this from the first day I moved to where my husband lives (I moved from a different state). So the entire two years of my marriage have been filled with this crap. My husband's relationship with his children has also suffered terribly. I was divorced for 11yrs before I remarried and never experienced one ounce of the trouble I have in this life, and it isn't even my divorce. The best advice I can give you is stand your ground. Say NO, she is responsible for her custodial time. It took my husband a long time to be able to say no, it is very easy for me. I know that he is still uncomfortable with saying no but I help him, Remember you can't let her control your life. Good luck, God Bless. I understand, it's one hell of a way to live.

Thanks for all the advice! My grandsons rearranged (SO nice to move all that crystal!) and moved the top shelve down one peg and they do look better. There is no question that all white dishes in dish open cabinets look best, but that is not what I have and I need yet another set of dishes like I need termites! I LOVE dishes - different ones for different holidays and occasions. I inherited most of what I have and setting the table is the part I love the most about holiday preparations. I have some lovely heirloom linens, lots of silver and I love arranging my centerpiece. My daughter appears to have inherited the "dishes gene" ( a 1st cousin has it too - I'm convinced it's genetic!) so someday she will struggle with where on earth to put these - of course some also go to my son. I'm hoping that my grandchildren will want them - at least 2 grandsons appear promising! They do look better. I realize that what is bothering me the most is how Shiloh does their Shaker glass front cabinets. If I had been able to see a picture (their web site is horrible!) or a cabinet in the showroom, I would have known I did not like this. What I don't yet know is if what I wanted is even an option. What they do is basically leave the center flat panel out of a Shaker door and put in glass (after delivery) instead. This mean the frame is very wide - not the typical narrower frame, so it's hard to see what's on the bottom shelf in particular. I know they do this so all the bottom rails will match. Well, all my glass fronts are on the same wall with no other cabinets, and even at the corner, I would not have cared if the rails matched. Who knew...They just look heavy to me. I will live with them for a few months but also find out what options I have, if any. We spent 5 hours today re-arranging the cabinets (I was able to bring my Mother's crystal and some Tiffany very thin hollow stem champagne glasses up from a cabinet in the basement. I rarely use either as it's too much bother to bring them upstairs. So now all my crystal is in one place! We had a ball filling the two food cabinets - lovely having baking/dessert ingredients in their own cabinet and a cabinet for other things right next to the stove instead of across the floor. And the drawers... oh be still my heart!!! OH how I've longed for those drawers (doesn't take much to make an old lady's heart beat faster!)!!! I had my DGS1 go find the angel food cake pans as they were the hardest to reach in the old cabinets. Bliss - right there when I open the drawers! Drawers are the greatest idea for kitchens since sliced bread! Especially for old ladies like me! I'm SO glad I did this...even with the concern over the glass cabinets. That will eventually be resolved or I'll just get used to them. Getting the glass in will make a difference - they look awfully "unfinished" right now - top of cabinets needs trim and crown molding, too - that will make them look more balanced.

I have 7 hanging baskets with the coco lining and I did the plastic thing too.
they are under my patio and dried out to fast before now they are doing great ..my Rapunzel is so long it drags on the ground ...very cool!!

I hear you Grant! Getting out of town for a few days can be really difficult. At the beginning of this summer I laid in a bunch of soaker hoses on a timer and that has helped tremendously and I bought 4 of the blown glass tubes for some indoor plants. Another thing I did was buy a kid's plastic swimming pool and I place lots of plants in that, under the patio and add a few inches of water. That was a good remedy too.

I like the Ooze Tube idea. I'll have to get a couple of those for the young mesquite trees I planted a year ago. Slowwww drip is best. Thanks for the info.

Yeah that phenomenon made me pretty much give up on container gardening. Before my last trip, I took the few remaining survivors and transplanted them into the veggie beds, where there is automatic irrigation.

But pots full of empty soil looked so sad. I finally decided to try and convert the planters to self-waterers. They are just completed, so I don't know if they will work of not. But I figure they plants would have died anyway, had I not tried.

I have never been nervous, but this last time I tried to talk my hubby into letting us hire a kid from the neighborhood. He thought my sisters' offers were good enough. Well, one of my sisters is not too bright, and she accidentally turned off the faucet that goes to the timing system for the drip and sprinklers. So my container plants that were manually watered were fine, but we lost our lawn and non established plants in beds. She will NOT be helping again!
