painted my front door - I think I really screwed up!
Comments (22)Dh just came home & I asked him. This is my layman's version. Red paint is mostly colorant and so has less base paint in it and takes more to get a good cover. If you used 3 thick coats, it is probably just that, too thick & needs more cure time. On the spots not sticking, he said if they are truly not adhering, you have a problem and you should either scrape, strip or sand those spots until you get down to something solid, smooth the whole door & start over. If it's sticky, it will gum up the sandpaper, but can be done. Then, if you are using a neutral base paint, use a gray base primer and it will be easier to cover. What is the specific paint you were using, i.e. brand, type (acrylic latex, etc). He suggests you go back over it with an acrylic latex and you'll be fine....See MoreI think I hate my Stepdaughter
Comments (12)Brenk, I don't even think that your post should be "I think I hate my Stepdaughter" because your feelings towards her admirably transpire nowhere in what you write other than in the title of your post. This is a very serious and dangerous situation. I am so sorry to hear you are going through this, especially during your pregnancy (as if that and then taking care of a 1-year-old wasn't enough already!!!). Biologically "linked" or not, if one of your children is harming another one of your children, what would you do? What would you do with your husband if he weren't listening to you then? I think it's clear you would make sure everyone be safe, right? A woman I met many years ago said that relationships are like wagons: sometimes the man pulls the wagon, other time the woman does... It sounds like you have to pull this wagon because your husband's judgement may simply be clouded by the guilt of it all... I can't tell you how many times I have had to have the same discussion over and over again with my husband, sometimes making decisions without his "consent" simply because there were pressing issues at hand. Talk to CPS for advice; do you have a counselor or a therapist you can talk to? Anyone that little girl can work with? You are in such a delicate point of your life, the last thing you need is stress like this. Find someone by you to give you support... Personally, I am not a fan of the idea of sending the little girl away, I think that sending the wrong message (you screw up, we ship you off); but as other posters have said, I think she needs to hear a message. Also, if you see something off about the little girl, then I take it all back and I say pack and leave ASAP.... but from what you write, it doesn't sound like that. And you know what? You may be too strict on that little girl, but for pete's sake, you are pregnant!!! You have a babe on top of that to take care of!!! It's a miracle that your fuses haven't blown completely. Not that losing your cool is OK, but it happens and you need some support. Chances are, you may be more strict than your normally would be because you have no back-up and you are doing the enforcing for 2! What helped my husband hear what I had to say when we had "issues" is that I told him that the problem was mine and that I needed his help because I couldn't handle everything. Nothing about how I felt about the kids, nothing about how he was an absentee parent, nothing about how insane or dangerous I thought the children's behavior was (we had our interesting patches too), but all about me. I don't know, I suppose he felt as if he could "save his damsel in distress", but something clicked and he stepped up to the plate. I don't know if it holds any value for you, but I will keep you in my prayers....See MoreI hate my cabinet doors
Comments (11)The tall pantry doors need the rail because of their height. The door to the left of it does not. The drawers also don't need to be slab. It's about a 5% upcharge to get 5 piece drawer fronts on my kitchen cabinets. And I have them now. It's fine. The photos here are slab because they are inset drawers. With inset, the drawer front is smaller, so the rails almost meet. But since these drawers should be full overlay, they'll be bigger and don't need to be slab. In fact, if you do slab drawers, full overlay, then you need the rails to help it look more like the inspiration. And the reason they need to be full overlay is that the doors meet in the middle, and the drawers don't. It looks like someone wasn't paying attention. If you spaced the doors to match the drawer spacing (partial overlay), then you'd have a gap where you'd see into the cabinet. To avoid that, you need a post to fill the gap between the doors. But then a) you'd have a post making that cabinet less functional; and b) it wouldn't look anything like the inspiration. So, yeah, those doors and drawers need to go....See MoreI hate my front yard!
Comments (5)I can't speak too much on grass choices in the Bermuda zone, but I can say that the people who will are going to need to know your general location. State and nearest city should do fine. I just had my own vole problem on my south face and it seems to be solved. I used the following formula: 1 oz castor oil 1/8 oz neem oil (optional) 1 oz Dawn dishwashing detergent I put that in my hose end sprayer, diluted with water, and sprayed it over 1,000 square feet while gently shaking the hose-end to keep the mix from separating (which it does do). Neem oil is a heavily scented oil (something like a combination of cedar, patchouli, and a dash of something pungent), but it can be tough to source. I sometimes use it for soap making, so I have some on hand. You can get castor in any drug store in the same section as the rest of the laxatives. Skin exposure is harmless and it's actually an excellent moisturizer. I have tons on-hand because I use a lot when making soap. If you end up needing a lot, I can point you toward an online store where it's cheap...when you order 7 pounds. The voles absolutely detest the scent of the castor oil (and the neem if you use it), plus the oil and soap makes their fur greasy and wet, which they hate. They pick up and go elsewhere....See MoreJillius
