Did you grow them all from seed??

PV--I grew them all from very small plugs. Most of them I got when Santa Rosa gardens when they had their clearance sell. Actually I think it's going on right now. They were like $2 a plug. These have been growing for 3-5 (or more) years now. The plugs are very tiny, but they will grow if you take care of them. I usually leave them pots for a year or so before I plant them out.

I have grown the following from seed (they are still in the very small plug stage right now)---
festuca- elijah blue
deschampsia- wavy hair
elymus magellanicus-blue wheat grass
stipa tenuissima- mexican feather grass

I've heard the miscanthus varieties probably won't come true to seed.

Thanks for the info, Duane. I've grown a few from seed over the years - elijah blue, carex comans - and I have seed for some others, like the mexican feather grass.

Yours are really beauts, and obviously grown with care.

I also like the Japanese BloodGrass. I saw it from somone here in Huntley selling it. He gave me warning that it's very invasive. Is it true Duane?

Duane - love all your grasses - I have started several different variaties from seed and have had good success - others I have bought gal or quart size plants. I just love ornamental grasses and yours are very nice specimens - TFSing .....

v1---I've also heard they are invasive. Mine really hasn't been a problem. It is spreading very slowly,though. I figure I'll just shovel prune the part where I don't like where it's going.

Duane, maybe I should give it a try next year. I can try to contain a small part of a bed by putting a solid border 6" deep.

I got 'plugs' a couple of years back but can't seem to get something substantial out of them. They are growing, but puny. Is your soil rich? Can they tolerate dry conditions at times? These are suppose to be the tall Miscanthus. Mine are in well draining mediocre soil. The Ribbon grass next to them does very well and the Gooseneck Loosestrife in that area doesn't really spread since the soil does not stay moist all the time.

I love the stipa tenuissima (mexican feather grass), it looks like some strange fuzzy, hairy alien! I almost bought some things from Santa Rosa this year when someone (donn I think) posted it here. But I put it off because I don't actually have a garden yet! But I'm hoping this is a sale they have every year, so next year, watch out!

Your plugs from there have all grown just beautifully. They make such very nice foliage. I am thinking they might work well in front of some tall things that sometimes tend to have ratty looking foliage by the time they bloom.

tiff--I kept them in pots for 1-2 years potting them up gradually. I found if they don't do well in one area, I'd move them. I kept them from drying out to much when they were young. I never fertilize them. Now, I don't water them too much. They do take awhile to get established. Hope that helps.
