Power company warning letter

Here's a scanned copy of my power company's reminder on where not to plant trees. Personally I think they're a little too concerned about redbuds. Guess the point is at the mature height of these trees they just might come by and prune them.

Our power company sends notices that they spray herbacides and also inject around the trees, growth reducing solutions.

I think they killed a double staggered row of my 5-6 foot tall Thuja Green Giants, all because they did not know that I had planted them far enough for these GGS not to have spread into the lines once they reached the height of the lines.

I could be wrong, but it seemed very strange to me that the entire lot of these trees died. They had been doing fine all of last year, and there did not appear to be any other environmental stressors, which would have caused such massive failure by this last September.

how apropo .. appropriate to various other postings ....

if you have any spare space... BEG for some good FREE chips ...

if access is SAFE and simple... winter cut chips are the best.. due to lack of greenery ...

they will not do it if there is any burden or safety concerns ... but if its close and easy ...

we went through this.. right after i invested in a generator and electrician ... nothing like the power going out in the dead of a MI winter for two or three days ... two or three times in one winter ...

they had to dump the trucks at the end of the day ... or the chips would freeze solid into the truck ... they were based 40 miles away ... and would just park the truck locally ..

with 5 acres.. and very easy in/out ... they gave me about 150 yards of chips in one winter ... he said.. just let us know when you have enough... i told him just say good bye when you arent coming back ... every week or so.. he would make sure.. and i would laugh..

then spring came.. and the horror of the scope of the project set in.. how in the heck was i going to move it all ... lol ... had to hire a front end loader from a cousin .. and luckily a new neighbor with a JDeere moved in ...

I live on a private road in rural Virginia and was thinking of using the cleared area underneath the powerlines for a garden. Most land in my area is forest, so pre-cleared land with sun is hard to come by. A couple of years back they came through and mowed down everything under their power lines, a 40 ft swath. If it was a tree or bush no matter how tall they buzzed it down to the ground, then they came back last year and applied some sort of defoliant. My neighbor who was trying to build up a thicket type barrier about 3-4 ft tall was sprayed. I was going to give them a call before spring and see what their policy was and what my rights under their easement were. About a decade ago a big power conglomerate sold to a local co-op, and the local coop has been johnny on the spot when it comes to outages, but for everything else, it's like Comcast Cable runs the power company. They're a local monopoly and they know it.

Kitty, Thank you for asking. As I had posted previously, I was able to work with the powers that be and move most of the easement work off my garden beds. However, this whole situation had spawned a true discussion between my DH and I. He had suggested selling our current urban .25 acres to get something bigger when all of this was happening and even though this crisis was averted, we talked it over and decided we were still going to sell the house and look for more acreage. I was coming close to not having enough garden space and this place would need major changes to make it what we wanted. We both travel for work and thus have hotel rooms paid for us year round. So we are selling this house and then looking to buy some land and build, living in hotels in the mean time. Thus unfortunately I had to cancel/postpone my huge spring orders and have to move a large portion of my garden to my mother-in-laws for the time being while we prepare to sell. I am confident however that it means that I will have much more land to garden within the next year. Keep your fingers crossed for me and once again, thank you for everyones advice and support. You all are the absolute best and I could not describe the happiness this forum brings me. Thank you.

Some companies do offer a "spiff" to realtors. In our state, it's on our contracts that if a home warranty is purchased, the realtor may get a "spiff" from it. It's around $50, depending on the company. But even if a homeowner chooses to offer a home warranty on the sale of their house that didn't pay any bonuses, I still recommend them. I had a seller decide he didn't want to buy one, and a week before his house closed, his HVAC system died. If he'd purchased a home warranty, not only would his buyer be covered, but he would have been covered until the sale of the house went through. As it was, he had to spend $1400 on a new unit. Had another seller who elected to include a home warranty for a prospective buyer. The warranty covered his property while it was on the market. In the middle of summer, one of his a/c compressors failed. $55 (plus the $400) fixed it, rather than him paying in the thousands. It's just one of those things that goes a long way in protecting the property while it's being marketed, and also a "warm fuzzy" for buyers. No, they don't cover everything, but they sure can help!

To clarify, nowhere on my invoice does it state it is a GE/Assurant warranty. But who knows, maybe ABT and GE both know that ABT only uses GE...but I don't know that. I faxed my invoice to GE, and they said they will try to straighten out the paperwork with it. My invoice establishes that I paid ABT for a warranty, it doesn't say who the warranty is with. I didn't even know it was with GE until ABT told me it was. I was originally told by GE the paperwork should come from ABT, and ABT did not disagree with that even after two days and many phone calls and speaking with different people at both companies (the idea of me sending my invoice to GE came up after I was transferred to another department at GE and basically begged them to help me since ABT was being such a PITA). If ABT had sent the paperwork to GE right away, and maybe asked them to expedite the processing (I find it hard to believe there isn't a better way for this to be dealt with), I would be getting this repaired Tuesday. Even if GE is able to process this with my paperwork it will take up to 8 business days (with the day count starting Monday) before I can schedule service (per GE). And that is assuming nothing goes wrong, they can use my invoice, etc. This thread doesn't even begin to document what I went through this past week. Many, many phone calls. Call to ABT, call to GE, asking ABT to fax paperwork, checking with GE if it was received, calling ABT again, calling GE again, speaking to someone else at GE, etc, etc. I am going to make more calls Monday. Thank you everyone for your support here, and to the people who have emailed me privately.

that is great about the wood chip loads. I will have to make a deal with the utility companies here. We could use a few dump trucks of chips eventually.
