Spraying fruit trees
Comments (3)Hman, You're right. For some reason, I thought the rates for carbaryl used as a thinner were less than rates used as an insecticide. I looked at the label for the 4L, and the rates are basically the same (max rate of 3 quarts/acre). Perhaps my memory was clouded from the bad experience I had with carbaryl last year. I was using a backpack and had a small amount of carbaryl left over in the sprayer. Rather than dump it out, I added some water and mixed in another insecticide (Intrepid, I think) to hit a few smaller apple trees. The carbaryl in the mix ended up thinning nearly all the apples off. Looking back, it was probably ideal thinning conditions that caused the problem, but has me scared of using it on apples since....See MorePower company warning letter
Comments (3)how apropo .. appropriate to various other postings .... if you have any spare space... BEG for some good FREE chips ... if access is SAFE and simple... winter cut chips are the best.. due to lack of greenery ... they will not do it if there is any burden or safety concerns ... but if its close and easy ... we went through this.. right after i invested in a generator and electrician ... nothing like the power going out in the dead of a MI winter for two or three days ... two or three times in one winter ... they had to dump the trucks at the end of the day ... or the chips would freeze solid into the truck ... they were based 40 miles away ... and would just park the truck locally .. with 5 acres.. and very easy in/out ... they gave me about 150 yards of chips in one winter ... he said.. just let us know when you have enough... i told him just say good bye when you arent coming back ... every week or so.. he would make sure.. and i would laugh.. then spring came.. and the horror of the scope of the project set in.. how in the heck was i going to move it all ... lol ... had to hire a front end loader from a cousin .. and luckily a new neighbor with a JDeere moved in ... anyway .. thx for the post ken...See MoreWeed Killer Damaged Pine Trees
Comments (1)My lawn spray company applied DuPont's Imprelis (weed killer) which is causing death to pines and spruce around the country. They applied Essential Plus 1-0-1 as a soil drench to saturate the root zone with vitamins and minerals-the fact sheet on Essential Plus sounds wonderful. You might want to look into that....See MoreWeed killer that doesn't kill plants and trees
Comments (11)Here's the rub: weed killers - herbicides - can't distinguish between a weed or any other sort of plant, many of which are desirable in the garden. At most, they will target specific plant types but not necessarily individual plants. Weed killers used on lawns typically target boadleaved weeds, leaving the turf grass/lawn alone. Using the same weed killer in a planted area with flowering plants, annuals, perennials etc. runs the risk of killing those plants as well, as the herbicide only recognizes them as broadleaved. Using any sort of herbicide in a non-lawn planted area is risky. Really only the ones that target monocots or grass-like (single bladed) plants are safe. Your options are to remove any weeds in these areas manually, burn them off individually (and very carefully) with a weed torch or smother them. Once the weeds are removed, mulching will help to keep them under control but nothing will keep them out forever....See Morejolj
