establishment of transplanted trees of different methods

OK, let's have a discussion...

Most people say B&B trees are the best way to go for large transplants, even with the extra care to preserve them.

However, I've seen uprooted trees that were planted B&B YEARS earlier, and it seems that while, yes, they regrow plenty of new feeder roots, the thick roots that were cut at the time they were dug, never really re-grow anything but spindly roots at the end of the cut. To me, this suggests the trees never really get the thick, heavy, long anchoring roots they need to be stable in the ground.

I wish I could find pictures of what I am talking about...am I off base here?

My thought is a GOOD containerized tree is better, as long as you can be assured of no girdling/circling roots. Even if it means rinsing the soil and planting like a bare-root.

The rootmaker type pots SEEM even better than either traditional method. Although they seem to lack the anchoring roots too.
