Recent Lawn Issue- Chandler AZ

Info needed. I am having an issue with my lawn right now. The problem started 2 days ago. The problem is that parts of my lawn appear to be dying. I had a winter lawn that was great looking, no problems. With our recent higher temps I have been watering every other day for 20-30 minutes per zone. I have three watering zones on the lawn.Only one zone is looking bad. Yellow, dead or dying look. It started in a 10'x3' area one day & is progressing daily. It gets the same water as the other 2 zones.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Very bad idea ... you are overwatering by a phenomenal amount.

I agree with lzygdns. When it was above 100 I shifted to 15min 2x/wk. I have
a mix of hybrid and reg bermuda and it looks fine on that amt of water. When
I up it for the "real" summer, I'll up the time to insure I get a good deep soaking but probably not the freq. Put some cups out to check the water each zone is receiving. The browning one could be receiving a different amt of water.

Okay perfect. That's exactly what I suspected. You said red lava sand. The red threw me off. There is nothing wrong with lava sand. Whether it conveys ANY of the features promoted on that website is conjecture in my opinion. Well, it is paramagnetic, but whether paramagnetism is of any value is not very well demonstrated. One of the old timer paramagnetism skeptics was K Chandler, the founder of the Texas Plant and Soil Lab. He eventually started testing soils for paramagnetism and reluctantly admitted to me that it seemed to be present in the Texas farm soils with higher productivity. That's not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it tells me there is something to it. Quite often when someone tries one of the more esoteric "organic" materials and gets great results, those great results are more properly attributed to changes to proper watering, mowing, and regular feeding. Simply paying more attention to the lawn usually squares things away. Mixing sand with compost may work. I'm not familiar with anyone who has tried it. Compost has the remarkable feature of adding exactly zero long term volume. But when it is used it definitely adds volume...until it disappears. I'm just trying to think it through what would happen if you had deep holes to fill. I'm thinking you would go back to bumpy but a lot less bumpy. So I'm thinking pure sand is better. Certainly sand is much less expensive than any mix. Don't fret about getting the organic matter up in your soil. That will happen with deep roots and the occasional organic fertilizer. If you are going to fertilize monthly with chemicals, you can add Milorganite or any other organic fertilizer at least once per year to keep your soil tuned up. The concern with heavy chemical fertilizer use is exhausting the soil microbes. Feeding them some organic fertilizer occasionally will really help. The more often the better, but bermuda can really use all the chemical N you can throw at it.

Love Ours! You get the quality you pay for & the newer type we have had for nearly 2 years works great. The base of it is a matching green mesh, not solid plastic or rubber like older or cheaper versions. We have a large patch in our back yard to add green softness among the rest of the gravel, rock & xeriscape plantings. The grass itself isn't "hot" like concrete & imitates the same heat as the soil underneath real grass. Ours never had a plastic smell, it doesn't come close to "melting" & it looks real. It is installed on a packed red clay base and filled & raked with sand to keep blades separated like real grass. Our dogs pee & poop on the grass & rock, both. During non-raining seasons, I occasionally rinse both with a hose to percolate urine & dissolved solid wastes and dust through the underlying base & soil. Otherwise, the urine lays on top of the dry clay or rock plastic underlining & can smell. We had pea gravel installed over a fabric underlayer in pedestrian areas that allows water to pass through. The City of Mesa, AZ rebated us with $500 for removing the Bermuda grass (BIG water waster that stuck to dogs' coats and was deposited on indoor & patio floors ) that the previous owner left along with rock over plastic (fabric is best). It never needs mowing & gardener blows debris from rock & artificial grass easily with his regular maintenance. My grandsons play on it; never have mud or puddles with water play because when properly installed, it drains promptly. Weeds do not grow in it. Some HOAs do not allow it in front, probably because early versions did look fake. Our son-in-law installed his in 2006 front & back with HOA permission and it looks natural. No lawnmower in their garage, either. You might want to take another look at the better products! Good luck.

You probably would have always wondered what he was like if you hadn't taken him in so it may be a blessing in disguise. Now you know so you can put that mystery to bed. He does sound like a con man so I'd be careful with any financial papers left around. Lock them up & when he's gone after the house sale, you can start a new chapter & have a very good life. Your ex-husband sounds like a decent man and you have a good son who cares about you. To put his mind at rest about your health, why not try one of those life alert systems? It might give him peace of mind & he does need to get on with his life. Best of luck to you. I can't think of anyone who deserves it more.

We have been properly watering and mowing at the appropriate height. Watering: Deep and infrequent is the mantra for watering. This is for all turf grass all over the place. Deep means 1 inch all at one time. Put some cat food or tuna cans around the yard, and time how long it takes your sprinkler(s) to fill all the cans. Memorize that time. That will be the time you water from now on. My hose, sprinkler and water pressure takes 8 full hours to fill the cans. Your time will likely be less. I like gentle watering. As for watering frequency, that depends on the daytime air temperature. With temps in the 90s, deep water once per week. With temps in the 80s, deep water once every 2 weeks. With temps in the 70s, deep water once every 3 weeks. With temps below 70, deep water once a month. Note that you have to keep up with quickly changing temps in the spring and fall. This deep and infrequent schedule works in Phoenix and in Vermont, so it should work for you. The reason for deep and infrequent is to grow deeper, more drought resistant roots and to allow the soil to dry completely at the surface for several days before watering again. If it rains, reset your calendar to account for the rainfall. So I agree if you have been watering every day, then fungus would be number 1 on the list of issues to be concerned about. This time of year in New Orleans you should be watering no more than once a week and possibly less due to the humidity. I think what you're seeing is the after effects of that week long torrential rain about 3 weeks ago. My normal reply would have been to suggest using corn meal to resolve the problem but others have had much better success on this type of disease (rain induced) using chemical approach. I don't have one to recommend. Read the labels to make sure of two things. One is that it is safe for St Augustine and the other is that it can be used at the temperatures in NO.

Spring transition can be an unsightly time for turf. Sometimes the rye will die before the Bermuda begins to grow vigorously leaving brown patches. The rye planted last year prevents the Bermuda from coming back as early or as strong because it competes for light and nutrients. Other times the Bermuda has been so stressed by the overseeding process that bare patches appear after the rye dies.

Here are steps to help with spring transition to Bermuda from the U of A Karsten Turfgrass Research Center.
Ã¯Â¿Â½ Start your transition only when the minimum nighttime temperature is 60Ã¯Â¿Â½F or higher for five days in a row - usually mid-April in Phoenix.
Ã¯Â¿Â½ Lower the mowing height of your lawnmower. This is critical to success. If you have standard Bermuda or one of the hybrids like EZ Turf, Midiron or Bob Sod set your mower at 1-1/2 inches. The golf-green type hybirds like Tifway or Tifgreen can be mowed shorter. Do not scalp your lawn as this will damage the grass. Continue this height for four weeks and then return to the normal mowing height for your Bermuda.
Ã¯Â¿Â½ Consistently water to a depth of 8 inches. You can check with a probe or long screwdriver to see how far down the moisture goes. It's easy to probe in moist soil but extremely difficult when you reach a depth where the soil is still dry. Water once every 4 - 5 days through May and once every 2 - 3 days from June to September applying about 3/4 inch of water each time.
Ã¯Â¿Â½ Fertilize your lawn monthly starting the second week in April, with 1/2" lb. nitrogen (N) - per 1000 ft2 . If you use a product like ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) which is 21% nitrogen, you would use 2.38 pounds per 1,000 sq. ft. of lawn. (The calculation is 1/2 lb (or .5 lb) divided by the percent of nitrogen - in this case .21 - that equals 2.38 pounds).

Areas with bare soil can be 'spot-seeded' or sodded with Bermuda in summer if necessary.
