nurseries in San Diego with Asian veges and fruit trees

Can anyone recommend a place either in San Diego or L.A as a source for asian vegetable seeds and tropical fruit seedlings from Asia?

Not sure about the seedlings but if there are small areas of Chinatowns there or Asian grocery stores, they would likely have seeds.

What are you looking for specifically? I'm sure some of us can share some seeds for trade or SASE.

San Gabriel Nursery and Florist at 632 So. San Gabriel Blvd. is where I buy my seed. They stock Kitizawa, Evergreen, and others, and have most Asian trees that will grow in So. Calif in stock. It's a pretty large outfit, and fairly easy to get to. Just come up the 15E to the 10W and get off at San Gabriel Blvd., then go North about a mile on the right hand side.

The Oregon publication contains a lot of information but I doubt it will clear up much of the confusion about initial training of fruit trees. If trees are on vigorous, free standing root stocks, one instruction that is very helpful is to remove all branches more than half the diameter of the trunk at point of attachment to the trunk and do very little other pruning until trees come into bearing. For apple varieties that are particularly vigorous you remove all branches more than a third the diameter of the trunk. This will tend to create a relatively symetrical, compact and early bearing tree with strongly attached scaffold branches. Once the tree is bearing you can begin the process of height reduction and the selection of permanent scaffolds, even if you want an open center construction. With this approach you will be making permanent decisions with a tree that is much easier to read in terms of seeing what needs to be removed compared to something so small that you have no idea about scale and what scaffolds will look like when they size up. This is a method used all over the world by commercial growers of vigorous fruit trees but somehow has never made it into the literature of home orchard recommendations. Commercial growers have to spend a lot of money to get their trees pruned and need their trees to come into production as soon as possible and this simple method of pruning by ratio saves on the time needed to educate the pruners and also to realize meaningful harvests. Trees with branches of smaller ratios bear younger and require less corrective pruning. Branches also are less likely to break under fruit load. E-mail me for a copy of an article I've written on the subject if you'd like a more thorough explanation. It is actually a useful method of training all manner of trees- even things like maples and oaks, because it leads to the development of strong central leader trees unlikely to be damaged by storms.

What can be grown in San Diego weather?

I have persimon, longan,lychee,atemoya,man(? sugar apple). I had guava before. My lychee and longan bloomed well but no fruit was set. Depends on your area in San Diego too. If you are near Chula Vista, or El Cajon you probably will be successful in planting papaya, banana. Good luck. I wish I had a bigger yard.

Thanks for the input. I'll go looking at our local nurseries. I've never seen them in our local home depot but then again it seems to be an obscure fruit to most people. My friend just gave some and I loved them and immediately wanted a few trees. I want to plant them in large pots around our pool area. I did hear they like all citrus have problems with root rot. Which soil mixture would do best? Once again thanks for the input keep it coming!

I second the recommendation for Green Thumb in Canoga Park or West Hills and their other store, Green Arrow, in North HIlls. They carry better distributors such as Dave Wilson Nurseries trees but at about 50-60% of the cost for the same tree at Armstrong. They are also bigger, with more stock. I love these guys. Be careful when selecting deciduous fruit trees at ALL Socal nurseries. All nurseries will make trees available that really won't fruit here. In SoCal you require "VERY LOW CHILL" trees -- there are not enough chilly hours in the dormant season to make most trees fruit. So a "low chill" tree that requires 500 or 400 hours is still too high of a requirement. I'm in Northeast L.A where I get 80 to 300 hours of chill per year, so all of the trees that require more than 250 hours will seldom fruit -- only some years. Read those labels!

I have ordered Asian vegetable seeds from Evergreen seeds in Anaheim (www.evergreenseeds.com) and I've only heard of Exotica rare fruit nursery in San Diego (http://www.bonusweb.com/exotica/) from some people who are practicing sustainable urban farming in Pasadena (www.pathtofreedom.com).

My posting was unclear. I meant to say Orange County. Little Saigon and Korea town is there as well as a large Laotian community.

I just ordered a Kaffir Lime "ma-krut" from Walter Anderson nurseries I'm in the Mira Mesa area and have lots of seeds from Thailand and Vietnam send me a message if your interested in a exchange of seeds

If you head down around 54th and University in East SD, there are many Asian produce stores that you could purchase the veggies from ....and plant them. Or you can go on line to www.tradewindsfruit.com.

Check out this web site. If you're into rare, unusual and not so unusual plants it offers an abundance of information. Also their publication is second to none when it comes to unusual fruit. They're based out of Fullerton (Orange County) and have chapters throughout the state of like minded hobby fruit growers. A fabulous organization!

Nurseries in San Diego with Asian veggies and rare fruit trees.

In my opinion one of the best is the Bonita Creek Nursery, they have a huge selection!

David, the owner, is GREAT and the fruit is super.
They have Avocado, Cherimoya, Cherry, Sapote, Guava, Figs, Mangos, Berries and many other trees.

The nursery is in Bonita, just 15 minutes from down town San Diego by car.
