i would not bet on any cure .. i would suggest removal ...

I got a similar quote for a larger tree in Missouri. Mine is in a very open area though so that and my presumed lower cost of living make your quote sound reasonable.

To make sure, check if this company has thr proper insurance and get another quote or two.

Its about 130 feet from the house, in the back by a street, so its not close to my house. They said it would be taken down in parts.

Maybe my sense of scale is off. I am on the cell afterall. But it does look like they'll have to pay attention to where the branches fall so I think the estimate is reasonable. Get that 2nd quote and check on the insurance though.

Depends what you do with it. Bacterial leaf scorch occurs in many trees, but I believe that each tree species is affected by a different bacteria, meaning BLS from oak only affects other oaks, not maples, etc.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that as long as you don't mulch another oak tree with them, it would be fine.

Looks like pin oak, which IME is the most susceptible to BLS of all oaks. *MIGHT* be a Scarlet or Black oak, but looks Pin to me. Too distant of a pic to know for sure.

Although all oaks are susceptible, it seems that Pins and red oaks in general get it worse than the oaks in the white group (Bur, White, Swamp White, etc).

It's a pin oak. The arborist said it was beyond the point that he would recommend fertilizer and treatments. Have two others going over next week to get other opinions and quotes

That tree does look a little tricky because of the nearby structures and it is a big tree. $2500 sounds like a lot to me for one tree though. Partly it depends on the cost of living in your area.

In March I had a humongous Norway maple taken down (and some big limbs trimmed on other trees) for $1500. However I receive the "friend discount". He charges me $1500/day fully equipped (bucket, grappling hook, etc) with 3 or 4 workers. I always work the day with them too, dragging brush to the chipper, and trimming stuff while they work. I have no idea honestly, what his usual daily rate is? I will have to ask him.

Oh, and after the tree was down and cut up into 4-8 foot lengths, I sold about 2 cords of the green wood on CL for $100. A nice man and his FIL came and picked it up in several trips and it was gone in 3 days. :)

They probably mean grind the stump and level the area.

A few years ago I had an equilavalant ash removed and the stump ground out. I guess they "leveled it to grade". Who knows. They left a slight mound of the disgusting dirt chip and soil mix and after a few rains turned it i to dirt chips I releveled and used it for mulch. The area of course has sunk a little as other roots have decomposed. My fault lol.

If you do not have the stump ground it will be there for maybe a decade if left alone. If you have it ground the area looks ready to be used for replanting but is not thanks to the ridiculously high wood chip content. Maybe part of their leveling is removing that stuff and dumping in dirt?
