Comments (3)the slack lines indicate it is doing nothing ... it was a large transplant.. and it was done to insure it remained upright ... and after 2 years.. it should be all set ... the wounds at your pix are healing.. i would ignore them ... though i wight flake off some of the bark toward the interior of the wound.. to insure there are not bugs in there ... do NOT further injure the callousing .... if that is the right term ... its getting near time.. to raise that canopy a bit ... so peeps on the sidewalk can walk by w/o injury ... i dont know about the timing of such for your oak.. in your area ... ken...See Morequestions about removing a big oak tree
Comments (10)Yes, JQ is correct that the presence of large amounts of woodchips from the stump grinding will inhibit growth for a while. This is largely due to "nitrogen drag" which is simply, the fungi in the soil which are decomposing the wood(chips) will use up any available N in doing so. This is a temporary N shortage. When the fungi in turn die, they will release the N back into the soil profile. If you do want to plant something right where the stump was ground out, expect to see chlorosis (Yellowing) of the foliage due primarily to N deficiency. This can often easily be overcome by the judicious application of N fertilizer. In the long run, soils containing decomposed wood will be fertile and ideal for new tree growth. +oM...See MoreLarge Oak Tree Identification
Comments (16)You measured with a Diameter tape? It looks like Q. Velutina to me. Beautiful tree. You got me on that one, I meant to say the circumference at breast height was 283 inches, not diameter. This works out to right around a 7.5 ft diameter. There is just something about large old oak trees. Even with their gnarled features and obvious issues, they are still captivating....See MoreRemoving large P. Selloum from tree?
Comments (5)That is something that can be propagated with 'trunk' sections. You just need to pay attention to which way is up if using sections without the crown. Basically you can remove the philodendron from the oak tree in manageable sections, then pot up or plant them to root and re-sprout new growth. Let the cut heal for a few days in the shade before potting or planting. Then just keep watered and out of full sun until re-established. I'll add that you do not need the root ball to 'save' the plant. In fact if the root ball with a bit of the trunk is left in the ground it will likely regrow and hide the oak tree stump if that is left behind....See Moreredneck_grower
