Connie, the numbers on each of the flowers in the mock up, is that to identify the flower by name or to tell you how many of that plant that you will need? I tried to figure it out using your first list to Aliska but it didn't make sense to me. Aliska..when you are having any work done by any professional, get at least 3 or 5 estimates. Yes, it takes time to get all the estimates. Let each person know that you are getting other estimates and will get back to them. Don't let them pressure you into making a snap decision. There are many con artist out there and there are reputable companies. Spring is a time when these type people or companies come out of the woodwork. Same way when we have days and days of rain..the waterproofing companies start sending ads through the mail and the telemarketing calls start. After you get all your estimates, sit down and call the Better Business Bureau and see if they've had any complaints on this person or company. If they have, was that complaint satisfied with the customer or did it have to go through the courts. Beware of people that show up using out of state tags on their cars that aren't in your nearby area. Make a notation of a tag # if you are supiscious. Don't always go with the lowest bidder. There is also a state licensing dept for home improvement contractors. You can check with them to see if there are any complaints registered against the contractor. Stick with reputable, reliable companies that have been in business for a long time. Ask friends for referrals if they had theirs done. Now I know this is getting off the subject here but my husband wouldn't heed my instincts one time on a flat roof problem and we got taken for a lot of money. Anybody know how difficult hydrangeas are to dig up? Are their roots real deep? I have some small ones, that the previous owner planted that are still fairly small that i don't want..and I want to dig them up or have somebody to dig them up so I can make a new flowerbed behind my sunroom. Any Mid-Atlantic gardeners out there interested? You're welcome to come dig the small ones.

Wow! That is one spectacular collection!!! Question for you. What is the plant in photo #16? (One with red speckles) I have had one for at least 10 years who is reluctant to bloom, but very big and healthy. I don't know what it is, however, so am waiting to be surprised, but am getting impatient. Do these take forever before they bloom? It gets morning sun and a lot of light. Perhaps not enough light?

I'm just north of Concord NH. My new perennial bed looked great in spring when the bulbs were blooming but then when thru a dull spell. Now it's showing promise. I had hoped it would be showy for 4th of July company but, oh well. Full sun: several different yarrows beginning including the new all red one, echinacae (one bud blooming, the rest getting ready), clary sage (won't grow again, I remember this biennial as taller and fragrant, this is a dud), shastas, day lilies and one newly planted lupine is putting up a flower stalk. Semi-shaded garden: feverfew, day lilies, primroses (afternoon sun) and spirea just finishing, fringed bleeding heart continuing, hostas putting out flower stalks, monarda just beginning. Palace purple heurchera putting out flower stalk. Perennial yellow foxglove. In addition to late planted annuals, self-sown dark red poppy and calendula (some Flashback) blooming here and there. Old herb bed: nepeta mussini (catmint), lamb's ears. It looks like the astilbe transplanted in 2007 when we moved is being choked out. There are in what was supposed to be a temporary holding bed. I'm behind!

Running, That is true. However, for several generations now, in our country, a university education has been linked to upward mobility ... so much so that people forget that this was not always the purpose! NYTimes did a fascinating piece on how education became synonymous with economic success over this particular point in history, ... wish I could find it (it was in the magazine several years ago). That said, most people cannot afford 50k+ per yr to study something for the sole purpose of enlightenment. I think of majors like Victorian Lit. as reserved for trust funds kids, dynastic wealth, or the fortunate few who can happily lead lives of penury for their art. Or, they are majors undertaken as undergrad by kids who go to excellent schools, and who know they can do post grad in a marketable field anywhere they'd like. But for the vast majority of students, who, on top of it, borrow to fund their studies, they need to select a major that does, indeed, give them a good ROI.

But when I first joined this forum, I did spend some time one day trying to decide if your name was harry shoe or harry's hoe.

Hmmm--in light of the Imus controversy, maybe I should add I was thinking of the garden implement.

Most Heroic In Facing Weather Catastrophes (drought, the Infamous Easter Freeze, rose rosette):

Most persistent rose grower - period: Karl

Whenever I'm feeling lazy and don't want to weed, water, generally get up from my comfy spot on the couch with my cat I think how it might be to try and care for my roses if my body wasn't cooperative. Karl you are very inspiring.
