Ailanthus roots; HELP!
Comments (8)Ken, in my experience with tree of heaven, the roots are fairly distinctive. Also distinctive is how fast they grow and how terribly invasive they are. I have experienced those kind of roots with only two trees...mulberry and tree of heaven, both trash/weed trees. Their roots will grow under two/three car driveways and continue growing past the driveway and I guess maybe just stop where they see fit!!! Some people here in the city let them grow where they come up because they are so easy to grow and are perfectly happy in urban conditions. I kind of wish they wouldn't due to the fact that they are an invasive species, but, I can see why they would leave them. They are a never ending battle....See MoreWhat Trees Do You Grow?
Comments (37)We cleared a large area in the backyard with new borders and put in a lot of trees. I had never had a tree list before but after all that planting I decided to make a list of what trees and shrubs are in the garden. Here are the trees with I'm sure a few missing. Acer ginnala Acer griseum Acer triflorum Aesculus mutabilis 'Induta' Aesculus parviflora Sassafras Amelanchier alleghany clump Betula papyrifera Betula pendula 'Trost's Dwarf' Cercidiphyllum japonicum Chionanthus virginicus Clethra barbinervus Cornus alternifolia 'Golden Shadows' Cornus kousa Corylus 'Rosita' Cotinus coggyria 'Golden Spirit' Crabapple 'Prairie Fire' Cretaegus phaenopyrum Evodia daniellii Fagus sylvatica Fagus sylvatica 'Riversii' Gleditsia triacanthos Japanese maple 'Beni Maiko' Japanese maple 'Beni Schichihenge' Japanese maple 'Bloodgood' Japanese maple 'Crimson Queen' Japanese maple 'Full Moon' Japanese maple 'Garnet' Japanese maple 'Orangeola' Japanese maple 'Peaches and Cream' Japanese maple 'Viridis' Japanese maple 'Waterfall' Juniperus virginiana Larix kaempferi Magnolia 'Jane' Magnolia 'Leonard Messel' Oxydendrum Picea pungens-Colorado Blue Sorbus aucuparia 'Cardinal Royal' Stewartia pseudocamellia Styrax japonica Syringa reticulata In the woods surrounding 3 sides of the yard are tons of: Maples Oaks-white and red White Pine I'm looking forward to collecting more evergreens in the coming years. Comments (5)I saw so many white painted palm trees in mexico. I think it ruins its beauty, but apparently its suppost to keep mosquitoes away!? Alos when I was little I always used to think that that tree was a palm tree. I would tell everyone, "See some palm trees grow here". I guess I always had an obsession for palms! I would give one Ailanthus masquerading a try. They are techinically weeds though becasue they spread everywhere so I wouldnt plant one than 1. Also I would try to make a barrier so the roots dont start to spread because they will sucker everywhere and can kill trees becasue they grow anywhere and everywhere. Sometimes they even grow (and thrive) in the cracks of sidewalks. Also I would try to make a line like effect on the trunk using a knife. This will scar the trunk and make it look like it has rings like a real palm tree. I would probably space those out every inch or two. And remember that they do lose their leaves in the winter, and also can grow very fast. Good luck and post pics!...See MoreAilanthus altissima - Tree of Hell
Comments (2)I feel for you. I don't know how it ever got the name of "tree of heaven." I've spent the last month pulling dozens of young seedlings from my garden. There aren't any other ailanthus on my 3/4 acre lot but they're in the neighborhood....along the road. My feathered friends are responsible for "planting" them here I'm sure. I feed them in winter and keep fresh water in 2 bird baths for them and look how they repay me;) As I understand from others who have tried to remove larger trees, the trunk should be cut, bruised and painted with Round-Up or Garlon. But I have no personal experience. I would suggest that you take this question over to the native plant forum here for more experienced advice. A gardenweb search will likely turn up some threads from other flustered ailanthus haters. Good luck to you. Here is a link that might be useful: Tree from HELL!...See Moredash_2006
