This is perhaps a silly thing to say, but Ailanthus altissima (Treeofheaven) has huge pinnate leaves (I've seen them up to 5 feet long) and a narrow trunk when young. I've been thinking of planting some on my property and using a knife on the end of a pole to cut the lower leaves so it continues to grow up, instead of branching out. I've done this to other types of trees before-This is to obtain straight poles, but until I cut them, I'd have a weird tropical "palm" looking tree, which might impress the untrained eye. Any thoughts? Anyone done this? In your opinion, would this look tacky?
