'Mermaid'; and Teas and 'Perle d'Or' grafted
Comments (5)Ingrid and Jeri, Thanks for the input! It sounds like this may well be the right spot for 'Mermaid', if my cutting grows, of course. It will have a good deal of dirt under its feet. I want a big spectacular rose that will be a focal point, and I need a place for 'Mermaid' where I won't have to mess with it. Jeri, your supposition echoes my own thought: all I know is that several Tea roses that aren't reputed to be puny are looking puny--'Mlle. Franziska Krueger' also is a pretty sad sight. I'm hoping that they may have outgrown the root stock this year, and also that the smaller plants will be able to give me propagating material this year at last. I would love to have the hefty ever-flowering 'Perle d'Or' so many describe, and that seems feasible in our growing conditions. Melissa...See MorePerle d'Or: How thorny is your plant?
Comments (14)At one point, we had nine huge Perle d'Ors in the Sacramento cemetery. It was our impression that they all were the same, and I once discussed that with Fred Boutin, who told me that he saw no difference in the different clones. All of them have well-spaced, sharp, brown, somewhat hooked prickles along the lower canes - the top canes are less prickly, but the petioles have little hooks. It's definitely a rose that will snag the unwary. I agree that one person's definition of thornless is not the same as another's. I was surprised that Crepuscule and Gloire des Rosomanes both were on the "thornless" lists - they both have the same sort of hooked prickles on the lower growth. Zephirine Drouhin is thornless - not these roses! I'm sure that Gregg's roses will be armed as I described, since I took the cuttings for him. (It was nice of him to acknowledge that in his email!) I agree that the flower form does not look like Cecille Brunner to me. I always think of PdO as having strappy or ribbon-like petals. Its bud is not as perfectly formed, either. I have a spray of them by my computer right now, and have to say that it's one of my favorite roses. Anita...See MoreWANTED: Perle d'Or
Comments (1)I have Perle d' Or that I could root for you. It will take at least 3-4 weeks, but I have found it to be pretty easy to root. You may have found it by now since this original post is from Feb. Cheers, Collin...See MoreReviews / photos of Perle d'Or?
Comments (15)Nik - yes, it is self supporting, as are all of the other ones around here I have seen (I have a baby which has been in the ground for 4 months, but it is only 2 feet tall so far). The one I posted a pic of is old - the main trunk looks to be at least 8 inches in diameter. The Perle d'Ors around here are all fairly upright, like this one, they do not sprawl out as a tea might. Oh, they hate to be hard pruned. An old one was growing happily along the fence line of a house near here when the house changed hands. The new owner pruned it severely, as if it was a HT, down to about 12 inches (from 6+ feet), and it almost died. It took 4 years before it fully recuperated and started blooming a lot again.
