Mary Washington in memory of my mothers?

Hi everyone!

My mother passed away peacefully on Monday after a long illness. She had asked that her ashes be spread in our garden. I asked a few months ago about a good white with repeat bloom. I vaguely recall being interested in Mary Washington. We grow Teas, Noisettes and Chinas predominately. Jump on in with suggestions (fragrance not necessary--any size ok)

PS. Sorry I missed some of my favorite folks' birthdays last week. I will have a catch-up birthday pug conga line over the holidays.

Kate I'm so very sorry for your loss. I don't have a suggestion for the rose, but I wanted to offer my condolences.

Hi Kate -- Allow me to add my condolences.

Mary Washington MAY be the same as the rose we know out here as "Placerville White Noisette"/"Jacob Zeisz". If not the same, apparently they are very close.

Jacob Zeisz is continuous-blooming and quite disease-free here, and is much in the mold of 'Blush Noisette.'

Hi - I'm back in Sacramento, and greatly appreciate all of your kind words. Thanks so much. I was planning to respond to each of you individually, but I'm overwhelmed by your support. My mother was 89 in that photo. For the last 11 years of her life, she was legally blind from macular degeneration, and had only peripheral vision. With typical energy, ingenuity and tenacity, and some help from family and friends, she persevered. I heard from neighbor after neighbor what an inspiration she was to them. One said, "She wasn't just matriarch of your family. She was matriarch to the community." It makes me very proud to be her daughter. I'm the executor, and will be back in Ohio a lot for a while. I'll miss the Sacramento cemetery rose garden, my home garden and my life here, but there's something to be said for sorting through the stuff, reliving the memories, and spending time with my family back there. sandi, I think my friend got this one on ebay! I did see some at Ben Franklin before Christmas and they had a green one that I wish I would have bought because now they don't have any. :( luvstocraft, I am missing a couple of plates and saucers but otherwise still have most of the set (set of 8) and also the vegetable bowls and the big round platter. And NO chips on any of them! lol! The yellow tablecloth is as old as the dishes and has had lots of wear! kathleen, I didn't know there was such a thing as a olive tray before my friend sent me that one. I think they are so unique!

As I'm wiping my tears away, I have to say you pull my heart strings. I lost my mother two years ago to cancer. Sometimes I wonder to myself if it would have been easier to let her go to a sudden death, instead of living through each day, feeling totally and absolutely helpless, forced to watch her slowly lose the sparkle in her eye, until one day it's no longer there. I know in my heart that no matter the loss, it's the same, and no matter how many ways or times I could have said goodbye, I was never prepared for it. I never would have been. For the longest time, events would occur in my life, and my first thought would be to call my mother. But she isn't there anymore. It's an awful feeling to have to remind yourself of that. It's heart wrenching, and nobody could ever know the feeling of losing your mother until you've actually experienced it. There's something about the bond between a mother and child that just can't be compared. Fathers are special as are all family members and loved ones, but nothing could ever replace the void that was my mother. I miss my mumma, and there's not a day that goes by that I don't think of her. I felt the loss for the past two years, but I've only now just begun to cry. Like you, I've been fighting back the tears. My heart goes out to you.

I am both sorry for your loss and thankful for a peaceful passing.
Mary Washington is charming and healthy and has grown well for me without spray for two years. I've got other white roses, but my fragrant white poly seems to take/demand a lot more cutting back. If you've room, Rosa moschata is healthy, repeats well, exotically fragrant and pest free. But it will get big (five feet here.)
A smaller grower is Belmont Yellow. Shiny green leaves, palest yellow semidouble blooms. If she loved pale yellow, it would be appropriate (and is no spray, as well.) and is a shorterm, wider grower than Mary Washington.
My foundling, Cleveland Cemetery White might also be a consdieration. Mine seems happy to be about 3 1/2 feet tall, a large bouquet shaped rose with palest pink to white rosette like blooms and good fall color. To my nose, no scent. But self deadheading is a good thing that it does.

Kate dear I'm so sorry about your mother. Mme. Jules Bouche is a very beautiful Hybrid Tea that looks like a Tea rose.

Kate, I am so sorry for your loss and, like Ann, thankful that she passed peacefully. I think Mary Washington would be a wonderful choice for you. Healthy, beautiful foliage and lots of it and fragrant as well. She was covered in blooms up until the last frost. I never have to dead head this rose, the petals will just drop and it is an attractive shrub about 5 x 5 ft here. If she gets out of bounds I cut her back and she never skips a beat. If you have room she would probably get a little larger but she isn't a beast.

I just wanted to say, Kate, that I am very sorry but as others have stated, very happy it was a peaceful passing. My mother died during the Christmas season and as much as she loved Christmas and always looked forward to all the festivities and family, I think I am saddened by her missing that last Christmas, but it was time, past time, and I was thankful her suffering had ended. Time takes care of a lot of pain. She will love Martha Washington. So will you.
