I am reading post subjects in order to learn something here. It'

I am new to this forum. I depend on reading each and every post in order to learn everything I will need to know. Alliums are such an intricate learning experience... when and how to plant... what to watch for... when and how to harvest and how to begin again. Anyone else feel this way? Let's share our experiences. Post as many links here as you know of that can help someone new to Alliums/garlic/onions.

Thank you irene, you stated perfectly what I was trying to say. It does appear that I've totally messed up what I was trying to do, that was not my intention. laag, in a lot of ways, I can see where it can come across like that. Money does play a part, yes, but if that was all it was, I'd toss some stuff in there, and call it good. Have you ever had a home "talk" to you, but were unable to understand what it was asking for? This house talks to me, but I no longer hear it's message clearly. I used to be able to articulate my thoughts better, that took a hit when the MS affected my cognitive abilities last year. Nothing I can do about that, but try. A little guidance and less critism to a relative newbie here would have been a much nicer way to use your time. Although in reading some of your previous responses it apprears critism is your specialty. I think I'll just go back to my little dirt pile now, and put to use the things I learned from brent, amazon and nandina, who took the time to offer their help through their advice and time. Toni, The steam is hot when it come out of the cleaner, but as it hits the air it cools rapidly, so I guess 10-14 inches would be far enough away to use on plants, but it seems like a waste of distilled water. You're looking at about $40-50 for a hand held one. It is worth it if you consider all the chemicals you'd be saving money on. I used to use it on my toilet I hate scrubbing toilets. Albert, you are using distilled water aren't you? DW will probably have a fit if you don't.

I've been reading your posts about Boone and thought he was doing better. I am so very sorry. Made me cry to read your post about his passing. Never easy to lose a beloved pet. Over the years from reading your posts I can tell you're a very kind, loving person, so I'm sure in time you'll find the right dog to fit in with your family. They bring such joy, and when they pass such heart ache. He knew he was well loved I'm sure. In some sense, it was a blessing he passed at home in his own way vs. having to have him put down. I had to have my cat put to sleep in October and it still makes me tear up to talk about him. He was 18 years old. I felt he had been a part of our family forever. This may be perceived as being a bit "out there" but sometimes I listen to a lady on XM radio who is a pet psychic - she talks to people about their pets passing etc. Anyways, she always talks about a pet's spirit being passed to another dog/cat that you take into your family. I always get some comfort in this thought and crazy as it sounds my cat that just passed had many of the same quirky personality traits as the cat I had growing up that when I heard her say this I thought - maybe it could be true! Maybe if you get another dog in a few months, Boone's spirit will come into that puppy/dog and you'll see some of him in your new dog!

Quirkpod, it's possible that you're making this more complicated for yourself than is necessary. There's nothing really difficult or complex about growing alliums.

Plant a bulb, clove, seed or seedling, and stand back. That's 90% of it.

Sure, there are nuances and tricks of the trade, just as there are with any veggie. But by and large alliums are the most maintainance free plants going.

Alliums are so complicated that if they were given a chance, they'd take over the world! Elephant garlic and white pearl onions have been trying to do that in the South for over a century. They are even succeeding in some places! Often, the only thing truly complicated about them is obtaining them. And that's a once-in-a-lifetime thing. We may make it sound complicated but it's only to get better results. What else can you plant in virtually any month of the year and expect a nearly 100% chance of survival.

Thanks, all. I've narrowed down my confusion to the question: when does one plant the culinary Allium family and when does one harvest them? Are they annuals or perennials or biennial? Seeds vs. plants? I get conflicting info. Plant Onion seeds in Spring, but plant Garlic bulbils in Fall. I've decided to go to the library and get a good book on the subject, but meanwhile it's an interesting thread. I hope to get a good understanding of the Allium family lifecycle/big picture, so I can weigh my options. For instance, what would happen if I cut the top off a grocery store red onion and planted it? Well, I tried it, and it's growing! Sounds better than planting from seed, but is definately unorthodox from what I've gathered (or not gathered) so far.
