White Dawn or Sally Holmes?

I want to thank you all for your advice on vigorous climbers, in my earlier post this week. I think white is a good choice, i keep thinking about the red brick on my house and think white is best. Anyway, these 2 are availible in my local nursery for half off. I would be planting right away. So, anyone able to help me decide? Im leaning toward white dawn, but want to know whats best! Thanks! Ive been searching google also.

You don't say where you are. I have both and neither rose is that tall- they are both about 5 ft. or so while some of my other climbers like Teasing Georgia or Climbing America can easily be 14 ft. or more! I love White Dawn for its white beautiful gardenia like flowers and that surprisingly smells a bit like gardenias. My two Sally Holmes which I purchased from Chamblees 3 years ago unfortunately has rose mosaic virus although in my zone that has hot affected the growth or vigor of some of my other roses. Sally is a single petal rose and that can be lovely too. I would get both! Perhaps you can plant them both somehow.

Pittsburgh, PA. I would hold off and wait until next year to plant. This late in the season, I don't know how well the plants have been maintained. Half-price can end up being expensive. I don't know White Dawn, but Sally Holmes is very impressive. Very different bloom form, as malibu_rose notes.

There are a lot of really great Consulting Rosarians in the Pittsburgh Rose Society. Give one a call, it doesn't cost anything and you don't need to be a member of the society or the ARS to ask questions. They are a very helpful and knowledgeable group of folks.

My rose wish list is a bunch of post-its stuck to my desk and little notepad papers in stacks from notes that I jot down as I peruse HMF and read the Forum posts. Most of them have repeats from previous notes. I never throw them away for fear I will overlook the perfect rose for my nearly full yard. And for the very sentimental notion that I would be "throwing away a rose." I know I have thought about Sally Holmes and Darlow's Enigma for the west side of my house, but I can not find either one in my stack - probably I thought they were too big. I had planned to buy DE at a nearby nursery next Saturday since I realized it may be the only rose to do well in the limited sun location on the other side of my garage door from Mme Caroline Testout, CL, but this post has changed my mind because of the apricot/pink coloring of SH. Apparently, she will have no problem climbing the trellis and spreading across the chains we plan to stretch across the driveway. So I'm trying to add her to my Countryside order due to ship this week. Hoping she'll make it into the box... Sherry

Sally Holmes, is this normal?

A healthy Sally Holmes can be a huge, very floriferous plant. You can grow it as a very big Shrub, or even as a climber. It may be just trying to grow to its desired size before blooming, but it's hard to say. Can you show us what your foliage looks like? The large white rose in the middle of this is Sally Holmes -- so you can see how large she CAN be. (Our poor dry garden no longer looks like this.)

I'm afraid I don't have any glamour shots of my Sally, but I'll share what I've got. Here she is in 2018, the year after she was planted -- no height yet, but doing well: I'm training her up over that black structure, which is the screenhouse where I grow fruits, vegetables occasionally, and cutting flowers. Last spring I placed a bench in her spot and moved her down a bit. Not sure if she resents the bench, likes the bench and wants to be friends with it, or just thinks it's in her spot: She gets blackspot on her feet and defoliates, but continues to bloom: I included her in this very blowsy arrangement, which had already started to lose its petals when I snapped the photo: Just a note that this is the first time I've tried to upload photos via Houzz, and they all look kind of blurry here in this preview window. Not sure if they'll clear up once I submit the post.

How shade tolerant is sally holmes ?

Vapor, she is clean here. I don't spray. The first year she didn't do much for me, but last year she might think she's ready and grew to a 4 ft tall decent plant. I grow her with Lyda, New Face and Doctor Robert Korns, these 4 are all wonderful in shade. (Thank RVR's hint.)

diane, i think your right! I am going to wait til spring, i think itll be better off and who knows if ill find something online over winter that catches my eye, ill be stuck with more climbers! I think im in denial about winter coming. I just want to keep going! :)
I am wondering which has the better scent though. I wish i could smell them now! Yes, i am definatly NOT ready for winter! :)

Also diane, thank you for the link to the rose society! I am thinking about joining, id like to learn as much as possible about roses, and i think it would be wonderful to meet people with loads of knowlege and advice in person!

Lilyfinch - as for fragrance between the two, hands down it is White Dawn, esp. when you have a profusion of the roses! Very fragrant - as I mentioned before, has a whiff of the gardenia and also violet fragrance. As for Sally Holmes, I cannot detect any fragrance.
