Question about Sally Holmes
Comments (8)Sally Holmes has some funny habits. One is that the plant reblooms better as a young rose. Once it reaches that 8 x 8 to 12 x 12 size, it often reblooms less. That tells us something: Sally reblooms best on newer wood that is well nourished (meaning well-watered). So as your Sally Holmes grows large, if you find that isn't reblooming well, look to two things: (1) are you pruning it in such a way that you're preserving a lot of older wood and pruning back newer canes to maintain shape or size; and (2) are you giving such a massive rose adequate water through the growing season?...See MoreSally Holmes or Nevada
Comments (3)I absolutely love Nevada . Although it is often said to repeat in autumn, there are, at best, just a few scattered blooms...but for the spring flush, it is magnificent, like a galleon in full sail - a gorgeous rose. Sally Holmes, while I ought to like it in theory, in practice, I don't. The flowers die unevenly, it often gets discoloured in the damp English weather and has an unruly growth habit There is some contention that Nevada has any moyesii in it's lineage and I must concur. My moyesii roses are still almost naked (it is more or less the last rose to leaf up) while Nevada has been in full leaf for weeks. That, along with the overall architecture of branch and shrub suggests a much closer affiliation with one of the spins. I can, of course, only speak with any experience of UK growing conditions so ymmv....See MoreSally Holmes?
Comments (45)One of my favorite gardening design idea sites (gardenia.net) has a great photo of Sally Holmes with lots of grasses and purple companion plants. Photo from: https://www.gardenia.net/garden/A-Pretty-Late-Season-Border-Idea-with-Asters-Roses-and-Grasses Isn't that a great design? I'm trying to create a similar effect, but with a few substitutes to the plants in their design. I'm using verbena, purple fountain grass and lantana instead of what they have there. Asters could work here too... but I haven't added them yet. And of course I want Sally Holmes to be a tree instead of the little baby bush they have there. I may end up putting a couple Peace rose bushes in there too because they are currently orphans without a home and I can't figure out where to put them. I love Sally Holmes. As a tree, climbing over a structure, trained horizontally through a ranch style fence. It's fantastic and super easy here in CA....See MoreI LOVE Sally Holmes (My 2021 Garden)
Comments (70)Mmmm12, I have a few overhead shots earlier in the post. I live in suburbia so my property is a basic square lot. On the left hand side is the lattice wall with New Dawn Roses, the fountain, and a shady garden. Running beside the garden shed, hidden behind the Japanese Maple, is the long border, with lots of roses and perennials. The cutting garden is on the side of the house where it’s in full sun all day. Here are some more pics from this morning. The Dahlia’s have started blooming. Magda: The Lisianthus isn’t difficult, it just takes f o r e v e r. They were the first seeds to be sown (started indoors) and are JUST blooming now. Breakfast this morning. Heeehee It is an absolutely beautiful day temperature-wise. (Pssst….off topic, but if you’re looking for a yummy breakfast during peach season, try fresh peaches, greek yogurt (Vanilla), warmed up strawberry jam, and top with slivered almonds. It’s SOOOO good. I throw some wild blueberries in the bowl too since they’re also in season. <3 )...See More- 4 years ago
