I was so excited to see their "Dark Night." It's actually a Meilland rose originally named EDDY MITCHELL, and also supposedly exclusively sold by Armstrong's Nursery as GARDEN DIRECTOR BARTJE MILLER. The latter is the ARS registered name. Wasn't much else I really couldn't live without (or didn't already have). Last yr they had SIGNATURE, and I was hoping to get it from them as mine died due to being overtaken by rootstock suckers. But, nope. They didn't offer it this yr. I did order a couple other new ones tho. Like that TANGERINE STREAMS and TEQUILA SUPREME.

I'm on Garden Valley Ranch's website right now, and they have Signature. I'm considering that one as well, but it's not on my "must-haves" list right now. It might move up there, though, if I can't find some of the others.

I was trying to be good and not get any new roses this year and then Edmunds came today and yes I HAD to open it. Lots of very pretty and interesting ones like Karl said but I promply tossed it in the trash to keep from ordering any. The ones I received from them last year were very nice plants though. Maybe I should go rummage thru and get that baby outta the trash.....hmmmmmm......

If you don't dig it out, you'll be sorry later and end up ordering more tham you should.

Yikes Flaurabunda! Garden Valley Ranch is selling SIGNATURE for $28.95!!!! Holy cow! That's ridiculous! I don't need it that much! LOL It's only $19.95 at Regan's. Just don't need anything else that badly... But thanks for letting me know anyway!

Their website is a bit wonky. Sometimes it lists the price of the 5-gallon rose instead of the bareroot. It's only $19.95 for the bareroot. I did the same thing when I browsed their offerings & freaked out when I saw some of the prices on the main screen. If you click the rose, however, it gives you the option between bareroot or 5-gallon pot.

Oh, ok, that's better. But I just checked Regan's again, and I was wrong... SIGNATURE is actually only $16.99, not 19.95. I still wish it had been available at Edmunds tho.

I think I'm missing something. Is there an unwritten rule regarding zone hardiness labeling for Edmund's. Only a few have hardiness listed in the catalog and on-line. I've never ordered from them before so I'm a bit perplexed.

Well, personally I tend to go by what other people in my zone may grow & not by what the seller might say. I ordered one "iffy" rose this year--St. Patrick--and both of the places that were selling it said it was okay to zone 5, but I've been told by other rosarians that a zone 5 rating is really pushing it.

St. Patrick can even be a little tender in zone 7. I'd put it in the most wind sheltered spot I could find for starters....Dark Night is pretty, but at 3 1/2-4 inches the blooms seem a little small for a HT. Wonder if anyone has seen it in person...The miniature Be My Baby looks good. I like the non-fading color part in our sun soaked climate.

I'm putting St. Patrick in the front of the house, facing west, where it will be shielded on the back side by the house. It will have a staircase & a massive Madame Hardy on it's left to protect it from wind. We get no wind across the front of the house from north, luckily.

Feel free to ignore any and all zone hardiness ratings. It's only a guess. You should go by what other people in your area have that are hardy. I'm in Madison WI and I've only had a few roses that weren't hardy - unfortunately Melody Parfume was one of them (it was lovely). Edmunds generally only labels the Bill Radler roses and some of the climbers. Zaphod - Edmunds is owned by Jungs, so if you see something you're curious about it will usually show up in any of the Jungs outlets as a potted plant in the spring. That was how I ended up with Over the Moon - I saw it when I was looking for another rose and had to get it.

I use the ratings in the ARS Encyclopedia which I find reliable. The ratings in HelpMeFind are really strange as if one size fits all!

Of course there are so many variables that no rating will always be right for the situation. But it really is necessary for some rating to separate the men from the boys.

I pretty much disregard the rating. Just plant the graft deep & protect it well in the winter.

In looking at their catalog I find a number of them of interest.

Now I didn't find mention of the kind of rose plant shipped ownroot or grafted?

before ordering from Edmunds I e-mailed and asked about own root and grafted and hardiness and they were prompt with the answers. I ordered from them last year and would do so again if they had the roses I was looking for. Pembroke

St Patrick would be enormously popular around the greater Boston area if it could survive Z6 New England winters, but it has a bad reputation around here. I have one growing in a Zone 7 part of the yard that survived last winter just fine. The graft union is buried deep as well.

I might add that Z6 New England is hard on unprotected roses due to the warm spells that cause roses to break dormancy--I think covering the roses with burlap helps to delay this. We also have about 4 inches of rain each month--HTs around here typically have issues with Black Spot and other diseases that thrive in wet weather.

All Edmund's budded roses are grafted on Dr. Huey rootstock per their catalog. All their own root roses are labeled "grown own root" in their individual descriptions in the catalog.

Well Dr. Huey? Just like all or most of J&P. I was thinking of ordering from them but I'll probably stick to the Canadians who graft on multiflora.

Maybe that's why my last ones from E didn't do so well. But then it could be me or my dirt.
