Favorite Corals? planning new bed as therapy
Comments (20)Jack Carpenter had a daylily with a huge, very ruffled, and absolutely gorgeous coral bloom that I wanted badly. With almost 2,000 cultivars and seedlings of my own, I was picky and only interested in something infinitely better than what I already had. I spent several hours on a field trip to Carpenter's on a very hot summer day, walking and walking to look at his daylilies to decide what I wanted. I finally got my turn to run around in the golf cart with Jack, and picked out three, including the coral. Everything I wanted he said WAS NOT FOR SALE. I even offered to just buy some pollen from a fabulous red, but nothing doing. It may be that now Mark is running the business, you might be able to get it. It had no name at that time. I did learn a couple of things on that trip to Carpenter's. If I were ever to sell daylilies, I would isolate those that are not for sale and put them elsewhere. I would not want my customers to waste their time looking for daylilies they want to purchase, only to find out later that the ones they took the time to choose are unavailable. I've also come to realize that daylilies that look fabulous when grown in a semi-hothouse environment may not necessarily look so great when grown out in full sun. Comments (3)One of my favorites is Green Spice--I get comments about how beautiful it is--beautiful foliage and it has increased in size for me beautifully which I can't say about all my heuchera. The flowers aren't that great, though. For flowers, I prefer, Splendins, (I think that's the name) The flowers are a bright red and it blooms for a very long time. I also like the foliage on Peach Melba. I also liked snow angel, mentioned above, but it didn't do well for me and eventually just kind of disappeared, maybe because it was small and getting crowded out by other things, my fault. I also like the foliage on lime rickey--very bright lime green. I just divided that as the tubers were growing up and out of the ground like they do and hope to have more of them soon! Comments (37)Joey: Very good questions. Here are what I learn about own-root roses: 1) Where they are bred and the TYPE OF SOIL & weather predicts where they will be successful. Roses bred in acidic & rainy & less sun England will be successful in acidic & high rain East coast. But roses bred in alkaline & hot & sunny Southern France will be successful in alkaline clay & sunny garden. 2) How vigorous the root is? The newly bred roses ARE VERY VIGOROUS as own-roots, and can survive BOTH Pakistan 113 F hot summer and my zone 5a winter of -20 below zero. Vigorous roots are both long (at least 2 feet deep) and spreading wide. Vigorous roots are also THICK to store water in dry summer/winter. Dee-lish can die to the crown, but the root is so deep that it can go for 1 month without watering, either through a cold & dry winter or hot summer. Dee-lish has a climber as a parent (Graham Thomas). If a rose is bred with a climber in its genetics, it will have deeper root. 3) It's the selection of the fittest. In breeding roses, there will be many seeds ... and only the fittest seed sprout up to be the most vigorous root or to be disease-resistant. The other dozen to 100 seeds either don't germinate, or sprout some wimpy plants that black-spot & less petals, or can only bloom once a year. This answer your question directly, breed roses in your cold zone and see which seed can sprout in extreme cold temp., and which seed has the deepest root to survive the winter. English roses, bred in a colder climate than France: most have climber-heritage or Old Garden Roses' genetics, and English roses are actually favored by hot climate folks in Pakistan due to the vigor of their roots. Deeper root = more weather resistant. I hang out in Facebook Fragrant Rose Lovers group, where most Pakistan posters are. English roses are favored in both extreme hot and extreme cold climate due to the toughness of their roots to survive long periods of drought....See MoreHeirloom Roses reports Graham Thomas is the world's favorite rose.
Comments (55)jjpeace, I'd love to see what your pegged roses look like. I've never tried it. I haven't visited garden centers either (or anywhere for that matter). It does take patience when you live in a short growing season climate. One thing we can console ourselves with is the farther north we are, the longer our summer days are for a while, at least. Did you lose the three roses because of cold weather? I'm sorry to read that, and Evelyn is a favorite of mine, too, though she gave me the willies with her first blooms a little while ago--lots of proliferations popped out--ick. Carol, thank you so much. Yes, you are patient, much more than I am, and I admire what you can accomplish in your short season--not just the roses but the other flowers you grow, I remember how you fooled me with one of your photos--lots of big blooming roses, and I didn't even see the pots. They looked great. I hope you have a repeat of that this year. Diane...See Moresara_ann-z6bok
