Some of my roses arrive today!

I placed an order with ARE on Wed night, and my roses are scheduled to be delivered today! I'm thrilled, except that my bed is not yet ready. So, how should I keep these roses nice and healthy until I am ready to plant them (I hope next week)?

I usually keep them in their band containers for a week anyway, starting them out in the shade and then slowly moving them toward more sun. Of course checking them for water every day is a given. I keep them close to each other and shade the pots, which can quickly get hot in the sun, with some leafy branches. It won't hurt them a bit to stay in their original containers, even longer than a week, unless their roots are really protruding from the bottom of the pot.

Meslgh,

I concur with Ingrid. You can leave them in their nursery pots and just hand water them every 1-2 days as needed. I've had roses in pots sitting on my back porch from as long ago as July, reason being it was far too hot to attempt putting them in the ground. With the mild weather we're having now your little guys should be just fine. :-)

Nik, I know that Americans farther South than my zone 6a do plant in the Fall but I have had no personal experience with warmer zones. However, from my zone North (and that's a lot of territory), Fall planting is not a viable option. In August it is too hot to plant, getting in the high 80s and then the first frosts come about the first or second week in October. Four to five weeks is not enough time for the roses to get established and prepare for the hard frosts soon to come. Our last frost date is May 15, so that is about 7 months. Usually we have snow cover then it melts, then more snow cover and on and on through the winter. This is especially bad because repeated freezing and thawing cycles heave plants out of the ground. A constant snow cover, which we do not have, would prevent that and in addition would be protective insulation, keeping the plants near 32 F instead of the -10F air temperatures normal for this zone. It may be difficult for most Europeans to sense the degree and duration of cold that we experience, Scandinavian countries and Scotland excepted. When I read English gardening books that say a plant is cold hardy, I have to remember they mean that it will survive in a zone much warmer than mine. Most of England is zone 8! Compare the Hardiness Zone maps on Garden Web of Europe versus The United States. The color of the zones give a more intuitive feel for the difference in climate. Cath

Bet, a healthy bush of Pat Austin will do well for you. It is one of the few Austins that have a pretty good resistance to blackspot in my garden. I've been a little disappointed in my Tea Clipper so far, the blooms have been very pale and washed out in appearance, nothing like the photo's I have seen. I am going to give it time and see if that improves but not an impressive first impression. Mine came from David Austin as well and were huge! Karen and tdogdad thanks for the info. I do not like to assume when expert information is a few key stroke away. I bought these out of Houston right up the road about 200 miles. They were shipped yesterday and arrived today. We had a different UPS guy and he did not put it into the round wire cage for packages. I guess I did the right thing the chewed up one got treated like a new cutting and the others were set about 3-4 inches from top of soil line to bottom of plant. They are in the plant area for newcomers partial shade. I wanted some semi adapted plants that could over winter outside. So I bought some nearby and hope to do well with them. They came from 5 gallon pots and I stuck them into 1 gallon. I seem to have a problem if I go too big with the pot before I have a plant that can use it. Moist bottom and dry top= fungus we do have tons of Humidity. Now that lamb is getting big. I had another set of twins and they were very healthy. So the flock is growing and I am running sprinkler lines and about to plant some more grass or a crop of millet. I swiped a 1/4+ acre from them for plants. 90% of the Brugs are in the ground. Now gophers hit them. I am hoping it set their heads spinning with nightmares. Maybe even killed them. Lots of open land that is not irrigated so when they are thirsty the come to my house. I believe it worked because their activity went way down. I will shoot a pic of all three. The twins are real cute. With so many plants I was having a problem guaging water amounts due to some being hit with irrigation. So I found a Moisture meter at Lowes for 4.99. I am getting used to the plants and their varying requirements. Have not killed any yet but have done some plant 911 more than I wanted to. There is a balance in the somewhere that I have not found yet. Fast draining sand vs potted plants vs vegtables vs grass. Maybe a moisture meter will allow some insight into the bottom of those big 15 gallon containers. Thanks for all the info Karen and tdogdad. I love the pics. It is true a picture is worth a thousand words. I may need to train the plumeria. If you think you may not be ready to plant for several weeks, you could pot them up into one gallons. I am assuming they come in liners.

If you are ordering from Antique Rose Emporium, your roses will be big, in gallon pots or larger. I didn't think ARE sent bands. If you haven't ordered from them before, you will be thrilled with your roses. I live 3 hours from them and usually go there to shop....but did order when I couldn't get away - and I was really pleased with the shipped quality. Since they will be in bigger pots, you can just follow the above advice and plant when you can. I generally add a little soil to the top of the plant, do this also with roses from Roses Unlimited that I cant plant right away. The extra root protection seems appreciated. Thanks for the information and reassurance. I got Belinda's Dream and Souvenir de la Malmaison; they look like lovely, healthy plants, and, as Judith said, in one gallon pots. The bed is now ready, so I can plant (if I can only quit dithering about exactly where I want to plant). Also, if I could quit dithering about whether I want Francis Dubreuil (aka Barcelona) or The Dark Lady, I could place my order to Roses Unlimited for Capitaine Dyel de Graville and a red rose already. I think that I've found a local source for Kronprinzessin Viktoria, at Chambersville Tree Farm. Then all I have to do is figure out who to invite to play with my roses.

So happy for you me sigh. Today is just perfect for planting roses in North Texas. ARE is an excellent supplier. Most of my 70 roses are from them. Today I will be planting FJ Lindheimer, Archduke Charles and Gnabonnand. Rose. ARE roses are large and they root well and thrive beautifully . Happy planting!
