Make sure you get some B-1. Soak your new roots in a solution of B-1 and water (I add superthrive and Seaweed extract) for about half an hour and then plant in your fast draining soil mixed 50/50 with pumice. for ground planting I use a raised bed or mound up the ground like a volcano so the plant sits above ground level. I put black mexican rock on the volcano to prevent erosion while the roots get extablished. When you plant, water with the B-1 solution and let it dry several days. Mist the stems and stake the plant so it does not wiggle while the roots are growing. Give B-1 every 10 days for at least three times or more.
This has root hormones to stimulate growth and it prevents transplant shock.

OK I do have some super thrive. I see you are in z9 also. Do you live on sand? I was asking because of the vocano type planting. My soil is 90% sand so draining is not a problem other than it can take 10"+ of water and be dry in 2 days. I use pea gravel on my cuttings to keep them from moving. I read about this on this forum a while back. I will also put in a stake. I guess I should go to pots first and then the ground. I can just see too many problems unless they come with a well developed root structure. So basically these guys get treated almost like a cactus?

Hi Jim,
I see you finally decided to venture into plumies : ) Be careful using the pea gravel. I (and others) have had the main trunk burned from hot pea gravel that was pushed up against it to keep the plant steady. All my plumeria are container grown and I've switched to using styrofoam for support. I'm not sure what the best way to support plants that are inground, maybe wooden stakes or something like that. I hope your plumeria do as well as your brugs.

I am reading here and elsewhere about the possible damage that can result from using of pea gravel.Almost all my cuttings have gravel 'cause I read on plumeria101 they conduct heat and stabilize the cutting.It's fixing to get real hot.Should I remove pea gravel from all my pots before I cause damage???D.

Thanks karen and tdogdad. My Plumeria arrived while I was gone and my dgs decided to chew on the box and ate 3/4s of 1 plants roots. It was the biggest plant. How deep does the root ball get buried? Should I use a rooting hormone on the injured plants roots. How deep does this on get its remaining stem buried. I hought some pictures might help. Some suggestions? they are soaking in super thrive right now. I also have dip and grow and rootone for rooting hormones available.

I'm in So. Cal about 5 miles from the ocean. I am on clay flood plain. If you are on sand you can just plant in the ground. In the ground, I would use plastic stakes if you are not planning to train limbs. If you want to shape growth, use metal conduit or large wooden garden stakes from Home Depot. In pots, I would plant those about 3" deep and use styrofoam between the pot edge and the stem. If they do not have any branches on top, you could just use a small plastic stake as the root system is already started. I agree with Karyn that in hot Texas, pea gravel might be too hot. You can use the top inch of pumice or just use the styrofoam pieces. Also, I would not put these in hot sun right away. A few days in filtered sun and then increase the sun so it can get used to the climate gradually as you are probably unlike the conditions the plants were first grown in. Bill

Jim this is what hot pea gravel can do to a stem. The plants are still alive and growing but one needs quite a bit of support because the stem is very thin where it was burned. I'm probably going to have to cut it and re-root it when it gets bigger and top heavy. It looks like someone took a big bite out of it. The other (in the front) wasn't as bad and filled back in a bit. The cuttings were started early last year and are still fairly small but I'm pretty sure that the one won't be able to support much growth.

Karen and tdogdad thanks for the info. I do not like to assume when expert information is a few key stroke away. I bought these out of Houston right up the road about 200 miles. They were shipped yesterday and arrived today. We had a different UPS guy and he did not put it into the round wire cage for packages.

I guess I did the right thing the chewed up one got treated like a new cutting and the others were set about 3-4 inches from top of soil line to bottom of plant. They are in the plant area for newcomers partial shade. I wanted some semi adapted plants that could over winter outside. So I bought some nearby and hope to do well with them. They came from 5 gallon pots and I stuck them into 1 gallon. I seem to have a problem if I go too big with the pot before I have a plant that can use it. Moist bottom and dry top= fungus we do have tons of Humidity.

Now that lamb is getting big. I had another set of twins and they were very healthy. So the flock is growing and I am running sprinkler lines and about to plant some more grass or a crop of millet. I swiped a 1/4+ acre from them for plants. 90% of the Brugs are in the ground. Now gophers hit them. I am hoping it set their heads spinning with nightmares. Maybe even killed them. Lots of open land that is not irrigated so when they are thirsty the come to my house. I believe it worked because their activity went way down. I will shoot a pic of all three. The twins are real cute.

With so many plants I was having a problem guaging water amounts due to some being hit with irrigation. So I found a Moisture meter at Lowes for 4.99. I am getting used to the plants and their varying requirements. Have not killed any yet but have done some plant 911 more than I wanted to. There is a balance in the somewhere that I have not found yet. Fast draining sand vs potted plants vs vegtables vs grass. Maybe a moisture meter will allow some insight into the bottom of those big 15 gallon containers.
