Here is Sweet Vivian (Vivien?), which is white and pink here, no trace of yellow. Excellent, excellent disease resistance. Never have to spray it for anything. Plant has stayed rather short here, under 3'. Slow to establish.

Another rose that is very similar is Charles Aznavour, which doesn't have Sweet Vivian's outstanding disease resistance in this yard but established much faster.

Thanks, everyone, for your ideas. The candidate doesn't have to be yellow-pink blend--a pink blend or yellow blend might work. The bed already has some pinks and yellows. The too large rose I'm moving elsewhere is pink, but it occurred to me that a yellow blend might look good there also--so that is why I'm thinking a pink-yellow blend might be perfect--but not absolutely required.

len511--Peace or Chicago Peace would probably work colorwise, but since they both have BS problems (at least in my garden), I've rejected them. You're on the right track otherwise. Thanks.

kathy9norcal--I'd love to see your pics of Bees Knees and Summer Fashion. I was studying them in HMF--but I'm never sure how accurate some of their pics are.

ceterum--Sorry to confuse you about the size. I'm not adamant about it, but I think 3 ft. might be perfect, but I may have to settle for 4 ft. I just meant I don't want a tall one. But then size varies so by region. Some people's giants are only 3-4 ft here in Kansas. And, no, apricot won't work here--which is too bad since I've seen many lovely apricot blends.

hoovb--thank you for the pic. I really like Sweet Vivian, but she doesn't look much like the pics I browsed online. But she's charming enough--I may add her to the to-be-considered list anyway. Charles Aznavour is exactly what I was looking for--until I read some really negative comments about it. I am considering his sister-seedling Easter Basket (have a separate post on it, but no real responses, unfortunately).

Any other suggestions? I'm open to possibilities.

Kate - I have Golden Princess and she is glorious in bloom. very vivid coloring, though. Mountain Music is in bloom right now and is much more subdued; more peachy apricot and softer pink. So far I prefer GP's color and bloom size, but I tend towards the louder crowd.

Some very pretty older HT's-- Confidence (Meilland '51), Everest Double Fragrance (Beales '79), Tiffany, Kordes Perfecta. Floribundas Sea Pearl (Dickson '64), Poulsen's Pearl, LP, (Poulsen '49). Of these, Poulsen's Pearl is probably the most resistant. If you were in a slightly warmer area you might try Rosette Delizy. A pink/yellow blend is not very common it seems! Take a look at Buck's Quietness--very bushy, spreading growth & lots of bloom. However like a lot of Bucks it's closer to 4 ft.

terryjean--I was very seriously considering Golden Princess, but saw the Buck webpage shows it as very pale--downright colorless. That really turned me off. So how does the color age in your garden? How long does the vivid coloring last? How long have you had it. I'd love to hear more about this one.

Sweet Vivien stays compact for me here (w/ winter dieback) and hasn't gotten over 2- 1/2 feet. She's very pretty and blooms a lot.
A pink/yellow blend that I like a lot is Charlotte Brownell. She looks very much like Peace but is much healthier. Unfortunately this isn't any easy rose to find.

Kate, the Buck website is actually an awful place to get a real sense of what these roses look like. If I had never seen them in bloom at Great Lakes Roses, I would have turned my nose up at many of the Buck roses in my garden right now. Golden Princess is a beautiful rose and certainly does not wash out to white for me. Here's a bud

Kate - I agree with AC; Golden Princess is really a stunner in the garden with very yellow and pink bi-color blooms. I purchased mine this year in May as a small band from Heirloom and I was astonished at how rapidly she grew and set blooms. My rose looks like AC's and was always covered in blooms; amazing for a first-year band. I can't wait to see what she does next year. Plus mine is own root; another plus for Zone 5 winters. Hope she's as hardy as reputed to be.

Oh it's way more pink on the petal edges than the picture, the plant has filled out a lot too--it was a baby plant there. That pic was with the old camera, it wasn't the best...just what I happened to have on this machine. Lots of pics at help me find, too, I think.

annececilia and terryjean--thanks for clarifying the colors of Golden Princess. I'm glad to hear the vivid coloring has holding power. How is it in terms of disease-resistance?

kathy9norcal--Summer Fasion and Bees Knees are beautiful--and your photos are incredibly gorgeous! Yes, either one might work, especially if I want to go for the well-shaped look.

Tim--I am very familiar with your Well Being pics--I have drooled over them more than once and cast my eye, in vain, around my garden wondering where I could put one. Unfortunately, although I'm not sure why, I don't think they are quite the right look for the spot I am trying to fill. But I will keep your suggestion in mind.

So I'm kinda down to these general considerations: do I want a somewhat softer look or a bolder, more dramatic look? Do I want to lean more towards the pink or the yellow side.

Hmmmm--I'm going to have to ponder this for a while. But it's so nice to have real choices to pick from.

Kate, if you're looking for a great garden rose, with shrubby growth that blooms all over the plnnt, you just can't beat Harkess' floribunda Escapade. I have moved around some and so am on my 3rd plant! This falls into the "more dramatic look" category.

Kate, I don't know if you have a spray program or not. If you do - even on an intermittent schedule - you'll never have a lick of problem with Golden Princess. If you don't spray fungicides at all, you'll see some blackspot at the base but it won't defoliate (which to my mind is acceptable.) At least that's been my experience in the last 3 years as my ability to stay on top of a spray program has been erratic (but at least that gives me experience with my roses both ways.) ;-)

annececilia--I'm glad you added the info on Golden Princess' disease resistance. Since I'm a bit of an erratic sprayer (like, if I remember to), that is helpful. That is why I insist on my roses exhibiting some resistance--or they don't get to live in my garden.

I think I'm zeroing in on Pretty Vivien (also spelled Vivian--sometimes both ways on the same page--hmmm) and Golden Princess, though I keep going back and looking at Bee's Knees. Actually I'm eyeing another spot where I could plant a second plant, but that spot does get some shade during mid-day for a couple hours. So here's my next question.

Which of the above roses can take 7+ hours of sun (100+ degrees in August--hard on all my roses!) and which ones can take a couple hours shade at mid-day? That may determine my final choice.

I think you are looking for Day Breaker. Very disease resistant, blooms its head off even in the heat. Long lasting blooms and an AARS winner in 2004. Do a search on garden web and I believe there are some threads about it which are very positive.

I think Daybreaker has too much orange in it. If apricot won't do in that setting, orange would do even less, I would assume.

Kate, am dying of curiosity. What else do you have in this bed??? I jumped in with everybody else making recommendations and I am embarrassed by my first post, as I mentioned roses that were the right colors but not necessarily good garden roses. I should know better, since I've been busy selecting roses to look at thru the bay window. And dang it, Kate, I just can't get Sweet Vivian out of my mind, she's lovely!

barbarag_happy--The bed is a small island in the middle of my backyard--kinda beanshaped out of necessity (there's a winding stone path on side that I'm not going to dig up--very heavy stones; at the other end, the phone company or one of those utilities buried a wire/cable)--not the most gracefully shaped kidney-bean, but it was the last spot in my yard with sunshine, so what is a roselover to do! Can't let that sun go to waste, after all.

In the kidney-bean bed are: Earthsong (pink), 7 Sweet Dianas (yellow mini), Mayflower (pink), Happy Child (yellow), plus a smaller pillar featuring Niobe clematis (dark wine) and most of the bed edged with dark purple pansies (except in July-Aug when the pansies have to be replaced by any annual that can withstand the 100+ heat).

Yes, it is easily viewable from my kitchen window and from the backdoor, so I want it to present a pleasing whole.

Patrick, thanks for the Daybreaker suggestion, but yes, a bit too apricotish/orangish for this bed. However, I do remember seeing a whole bed of just Daybreakers once when I was in Kansas City--gorgeous colors!

I'm now down to 2 choices: Pretty Vivien and Golden Princess. Every time I come inside for a break, I change my mind. I may end up having to flip a coin.

While reading your description of what you are looking for one rose kept popping to mind, Jan's Wedding, a shrub rose I bought and planted in my old garden, I loved the color blends in this rose, the pink, yellow and peachy tones were beautiful, it also did not get that big.

I can think of 3 Kordes roses that fit the bill, Westerland, Freisinger Morgenrot and Rosenstadt Zweibrucken. How's that for names. It's a color that K has been fond of lately so there are many others but these are the only ones I have. I have several pink blends but I thought you were more interested in orange or yellow's.

i didn't look them I up as to has them but its' either Pickering or Hortico.

Valerie and Jim--thanks for your suggestions. Lovely roses, but I am trying to avoid the apricot to orange range. Do you have some additional suggestions in a pink-yellow blend?

Jubilee Celebration, a David Austin available through Jackson Perkins, is a lovely shade of dusty pink with yellow at the base of each petal. This is my first summer growing it and I'm in love! It has been disease free for me and hasn't stopped blooming since late June (I just picked two this afternoon). It is fragrant, very full, and (so far) is a manageable height of about 3 feet. Because ite is a first year baby, the blooms droop from their weight (I'm using a light metal trellis) but my experience with the Austins is that this problem usually disappears when they mature.

How about this one? Foliage is very healthy and if botrytis is not a serious problem for you, I think this might do. Here in zone 8 it is 4'or a bit shorter.

Karen--I already have (and love) Jubilee Celebration. Should have stated that sooner after Valerie also mentioned it. Unfortunately, the somewhat salmon-hued pink shade doesn't go that well with Mayflower (the rose it would be in front of).

What about BELLA'ROMA? I haven't grown it but if I were looking for a Peace look-a-like in zone 6 then that would be the cultivar I'd chose. In the past I've read good reports about its beauty of flower and overall ease of growth. The fragrance is supposed to be amazing.

Then again, you really can't go wrong with TIFFANY. A classic Hybrid Tea, although it is much more of a uniform clear pink. The touch of yellow is limited to the petal base.

Ceterum's suggestion of Princesse de Monaco is a good one. The bush has lovely foliage, is well-shaped & remains fairly compact. I've also found it to be very healthy.

Another pink/yellow blend that I'm fond of is Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to find these days altho it's been the parent of some fairly impressive recent introductions, including Gemini & Diana, Princess of Wales. It's fragrant & has very elegantly formed blooms.

Diana, PoW is itself a nice blend, altho it may grow a bit too tall to meet your preferences.

I remembered earlier today that when I was searching for a yellow rose with pink highlights, there was another rose that was on my shortlist with Well Being. The rose was called "Sunny Abundance" and like Well Being, is another Harkness introduction. It is classified as a Floribunda and Pickering carries it.

I don't know much else about Sunny Abundance, other than it is meant to be a continual bloomer. It certainly is pretty. Here is a photo supplied directly from the Harkness website.

My suggestions would be Love and Peace, strong, disease resistant to the point where without spray in my garden, black spot and powdery mildew barely touch it. It does have a tendency to get rather tall and the flowers seem at their best later in the year, but it is one pretty rose, and full.

Another would be Little Darling. Another very strong shrub that is very disease resistant in my garden. The only thing little about this one are the smaller sized flowers. Yet they are quite lovely and the bush is full and the flushes are full.

Just a thought.

I was going to suggest DayBreaker as well for it's everchanging colors of the new day coming. Or, how about the J&P hybrid tea Tahitian Sunset which definitely has more yellow. Another one to consider might be the floribunda that has hybrid tea form named Sheila's Perfume??

One to consider though is Mrs.Dudley Cross. She can lean towards yellow or pink depending on the weather. And there are many times when she sports both colors, absolutely beautiful. I am so glad I got this one!

Pink and yellow?

So many good suggestions still coming in--appreciate that. I won't be ordering until after Thanksgiving (or maybe after Xmas), so I'm open to any more beautiful ideas.

I'm looking them all up. Some I kinda know. But I don't know much of anything about Mrs. Dudley Cross, cherrykist. Is it hardy in Zone 6? HMF say Zone 7--but I know it is sometimes rather conservative on hardiness. And I'm not sure about its height since HMF says 3-5 ft (or something like that). What is your experience--does it stay around 3 ft? It is a lovely rose, but not a type I have ever seen, so I'm not sure what to think about it.

Have you ever seen Camille Pisarro? A photo of it is on the home page of Ashdown. Don't go to HMF, it's not there. I had or have one but have only seen it bloom once. It is amazingly beutiful in my opinion. Good luck.

A real tea around 3'? I doubt that. I got Mme Antoine Mari because that is supposed to be one of the smallest teas. So far so good, healthy foliage and beautiful flowers. It would fit your color scheme - more or less, no yellow so far - but mine is still a 2 years old toddler so I cannot vouch for its final size.

Elmhurst is a goody
