Best Red, Pink, White, or Blend of These

I'm going to start roses again. I'm not yet retired, but I'm going to try my luck (since time is still limited) at pampering ONE and ONLY ONE Hybrid Tea, Floribunda, or Grandiflora rose.

To blend in with the landscaping I would prefer it to be red, pink, or white (or blend of these). [I love yellows, corals, and oranges....but they clash with my stuff].

Which ones in these color categories would you recommend. If you care to offer a "why" that would be appreciated as well.

It's time to place the order and I'm getting excited.

Double Delight is my pick. I think if I had to grow only one rose it would be right up there and given your color requirements it seems like a slam dunk to me. It's robust, beautiful, and smells great.

Same rose occurred to me--only one HT--gotta be Double Delight. Wonderful rose.

If you want something more pinkish--kinda peachy pink with just a touch of yellow at the base, try Elle. Good bloomer and fragrance.

Both those are moderately disease-resistant HTs.

Then there is always Peter Mayle--a hot dark rose-pink--if you want something really big bloomed and showy. I'm so fond of Peter that I'm planting another one this spring.

Yesterday I cut flowers from my garden to take to a relative. At this time of year, the flowers with stems of any length are mostly white, pale pink, medium pink and red (though I also added some yellow-white marguerites). The colors worked well together. The very dark red columbines were fine with the Former Owner's medium pink roses and the standard pink-red coral bells. On the other hand, the Robinson's Red pyrethrum, which had just bloomed for the first time, turned out to be a horrible magenta. Not only did it look awful with the dark red columbines, but it looked awful with the coral bells and the pink roses (and it's not long for the bed it's living in). Which is all to say that how I'd plant the peonies would depend on how the individual shades do next to each other. If some of the colors shouldn't be seen together, I'd make a random mix as jenn suggested. But if the colors are more like different shades from white to red, you might consider that sort of planting arrangement. Start with white on the sides, then move through the pinks from lightest to darkest, ending with red in the middle. Or have red on the sides and white in the middle. I'm not guaranteeing such a progression would work well or look good, but depending on which shades of pink I had at my disposal, I'd consider trying it. (However, I'm not a pro, so be warned.)

Were these those teeny little packaged plants you can get at the airport and souvenir shops? When you say you cut the leaves-- cut them in half, cut them all off, or cut the stems back? How cold is your unheated greenhouse, and when you say new tips do you mean putting up new shoots from the rhizome, or new growth at the end of the stems? Inquiring minds want to know! Okay, here's the deal... Just guessing now, but based on what we call the plants locally I'm assuming White Ginger is Hedychium coronarium (usually called Butterfly Ginger on the mainland), Red Ginger is Alpinia purpurata and Pink Ginger is A. purpurata cv. Eileen McDonald. If this is the case then the Hedychium is going to be more cold-hardy than the 2 Alpinias. Just how cold-hardy I haven't a clue because that's not an issue in Hawaii, but judging by the number of people on this forum that are growing it, I'd say you may have a shot. The Alpinias are more tropical, but without seeing your plants I can't tell you if they're goners or not. If you still have firm stems and/or rhizome, I wouldn't give up yet, but if they're those itty bitty little 2" pot kind, they probably don't have much in the way of reserves to fall back on. Alpinia purpurata doesn't form the same kind of fleshy, creeping rhizome that Hedychiums do either, so the new shoot is not going to have the same appearance. As far as how to take care of them, whatever you can do to provide heat and humidity will help, and if you want them to bloom, they'll need good light. You've washed your "pink" shirt before so the dye must have come from something else in the red load. Beware, red and darkest blues made from natural sources are never completely color fast. Also, some detergents can trigger colors to bleed. I would try a spot test on an area that won't show of an oxyclean soak and, if that fails, try the Rit product to remove dye. The oxyclean should work for the polyester, but might fade the red in the cotton. An easy way to remove excess dye in new garments is to wash in cold and then rinse in white vinegar diluted cold water. Good Luck.

Our cold wet winters are not ideal for Euphorbia. My plant use to get this until I started bringing it inside during the winters. I’ve seen the same marks on other of Euphorbia like trigona. Tbh I‘m not sure if it’s a fungus or frost damage. You could try a fungicide, but I have zero experience in that area. Luckily once the rain stops, which is basically now, the spots will scar up and stop spreading. At least in my experience. It‘s super hard to keep plants looking perfect when outside in the elements. The summer keep protected from afternoon sun. Next winter keep warm and cozy. I keep mine dry during winter;).

You might consider the pretty pink, Belinda's Dream. It's a true pink and has the high center of a hybrid tea (a hybrid tea is in its parentage), but it has much better disease resistance than most, if not all, hybrid teas. Many people can grow Belinda's Dream without having to resort to chemical sprays at all to keep down blackspot. It makes good cut flowers but has little fragrance.

For a red, Maggie is looking good to me. I'm less certain about its health in a no-spray yard than about Belinda's Dream, but some people who have it have said that they don't use chemical sprays on it. Low in thorns, its fragrance is reputed to be wonderful.

For a white HT, you might consider Pope John Paul II. For a hybrid tea, it's fairly disease resistant, and you might stand a chance of getting by without using chemicals to keep it looking reasonably presentable. Good fragrance and good for cutting, though it doesn't last as long as some others.
