PBS Special on National Parks/Ken Burns...

I realize this has nothing to do with roses, but hopefully everyone here will have the chance to see this absolutely fascinating series on National Parks--breathtaking, amazing photo shots and captivating filming of our National Treasures. It was so inspiring to hear the individual stories and struggles of the naturalists and conservationists against lumber companies, lobbyists, and industrialists and to hear long ago narratives of Americans who worked and lived that dream and passion to create these wildlife sanctuaries. I learned so much, I have never realized the wonderful legacies that people like Mather, Rockefeller, and countless other brave people that kept on fighting to preserve our National Treasures and all the painstaking dedication it involved. There were also tragedies too, sad things that happened and struggles. I think this documentary really opened my eyes and it was very moving, touched my heart to hear the words and writings of these incredible people who forged this journey and their gift to us, the future generations...

Ohhhhhhhhhh kay sounds good but ummmmm what time and what chanel is it on

What roses did do for my corner of the street: a 80 foot long side walk runs down the west side of my property 100 feet or so past the far end of my fence line sits a mom and pop convenance store.
Yep thats right folks litter litter every where to the tune of 3 30 gallon bags per week just for the fence line

I placed 4 rose plants along the inside of the fence line and some odd looking things for the butterflies this year sence March I only had to pick up 2 30 gallon bags of trash and litter from the sidewalk and have included my litter duties to continue to the front door of the mom and pop store.
The roses where very effective in the new attitude of those who pass by I see alot less trash and a few more smiles.

thought for the day *** you can't stop and smell the roses if you don't ever see em

There are 6 parts to the series (one part per day). I wish I had posted this sooner Alas! I actually missed the first day! and was pre-occupied with the Organics debate.

I liked the Nat Geo show, but have a couple of reservations. I thought the account of the two that made the transverse of the redwood region from south to north was not nearly as interesting as the other parts of the program. And one point made in the program was misleading. When it was said that the old redwoods are still growing fast, and in fact faster than second growth redwoods, that does not mean that old growth forests are adding new wood faster than second growth forests. Now, in case anyone is confused, I am as ardent a preservationist as any alive today. BUT, it is important not to be misleading. As "carbon sinks," old growth tree stands of any kind are generally neutral--the process of building up biomass doesn't continue to infinity. Forest research scientists have studied this issue extensively, and after a clearcut, the biomass/carbon additions accelerate slowly. At some point, depending on the kind of forest/tree species, etc., the biomass increase levels off, and at some point--in a redwood forest it can be after a thousand years or more--it reaches an equilibrium. But, of course, Sillet is right when he talks about the individual trees--the largest trees generally add wood volume faster then smaller trees. But, of course, in a mature forest, there are far fewer of them. Also, this insight is not new. I think it was as long ago as the mid 50's that I heard that the General Sherman giant sequoia was in all likelihood, not only the largest tree on earth, but also the fastest growing. Also, are any of you watching the new Ken Burns film on the National Parks? Much of this is really, really outstanding, and is some of his very best work. Last night one problem was the story of the couple from Nebraska and the story of their national park visiting experiences. I won't go into detail, but in the end I thought it a very sad story. Now I am now past 70 years old, and have had many, many wonderful experiences in the national parks. Many of these parks I will never get back to see again. I will never be able to share with my wife the experience of hiking down the "Bright Angel trail, and then up the Kaibab trail, having a thunderstorm come up when I was halfway up the Kaibab, etc. etc. I may never get to see the redwoods again. But let me tell you all this. All the memories of all the wonderful times I have had are as alive in my mind today as they were when I actually experienced them, and are a constant joy to me and always will be. And, unlike this couple, I was never sorry to get back home again either, even though at the time I may have wished my stays in the parks could have been longer. This couple seemed to me to be particularly joyless, and the story of the wife after her husband died and she could no longer visit the parks was very sad. I felt their story detracted from the film. I make this point to encourage you all to go see the redwoods. "Make memories," as it were--they will stay with you always and be a constant joy. --Spruce

Rhizo, thanks, I'll look later in the week and see if there are weekend showings. That would be great, Saturdays can be long days for her, no planned activities and her senior swim at the Y not on weekends ;) In the meantime, I do have the book coming. I saw some of last nights episode, just wanted to hug Eleanor, bring her home with me as a little girl and tell her she was beautiful and loved.

A number of years ago we did the out-and-back Narrows hike in late May or early June (around Memorial Day). Water was moving but current not too strong. It was beautiful but seemed there were a lot of folks out that day and I would like to do the hike again without seeing quite so many people. Same trip it snowed at Bryce Canyon. We stayed at Flanigan's outside of Zion and I would stay there again. There very well might be nicer places but budget was a big factor in our choice of lodging on that trip.

I've stayed at the hotel shown in your photo Ida (Prince of Wales). It's an incredibly beautiful area but much of it was affected by the wildfires a few years ago. I remember they had a special team of fire fighters working to save the hotel. The fires got really close... the Visitor's Center just down the road burned. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/prince-of-wales-calgary-firefighters-1.4290763 ETA: I just read that 30 per cent of Waterton Lakes National Park was severely damaged, 70 per cent of the forested area was lost in the fires. We were only there one night while passing through. We did get up to Red Rock Canyon. We were there in late August 2016. We were traveling from Calgary down into Montana where we crossed the "Going to the Sun Road" (Glacier National Park) and eventually came back up into British Columbia. The whole area is spectacular. I can't recommend the "Going to the Sun Road" enough - breathtaking scenery I can't even describe. We were traveling with my elderly inlaws so we didn't do any hiking. My FIL has Parkinson's Disease so is a bit mobility limited, so it was more of a driving-around-looking-at-the-scenery trip. I think I still have some photos on my phone. Waterton Lakes National Park is on the Canadian side, and borders Glacier National Park on the American side. Between the two there would be an incredible selection of trails and things to see, so many waterfalls, wildlife (we saw buffalo and elk), etc.

Debbie and I have caught everything so far. One of the best series I've seen. Totally captivating. Even better when you spend a LOT of time in one of them. I was darn near raised in the Everglades.

I agree, we've watched the whole series so far and it is exciting when they are talking about a park that we've visited. It also makes you want to be like the Gerkins and visit park after park.
I think it relates in that there is such beauty in that series and we are all obviously visually oriented or we wouldn't be struggling with roses. How is that for a stretch? Ha Ha

Ken Burns has had some interesting subjects in the past, but they seemed to be over produced and dragged on way too long to hold my interest. This series however is turning out to be the exception to the rule. Last night I was channel surfing and ran into an episode about the Great Smokey Mountains. The drama of how it came into being was as interesting as many thriller/mysteries I've read. Unfortunately I had to leave before the "good guys" beat out the "bad guys", so I'm glad my DH is taping it. Thumbs Up to Mr. Burns on this series so far.

Anything by Ken Burns is great, but this is, without a doubt, one of his finest. Makes me proud to be an American!

I was stuck in a hotel this week and thank goodness one of the channels was PBS. I really enjoyed Thursday night's program and really hope to see the rest of the series as well. It was interesting to find out that in the begining, the landscape was more important and animals (especially the preditors) were just a second thought. I am so glad the true visionaries won out in the end, even though the battles still rage on in regards to the wolves.

Growing up in south florida, I visited the Everglades quite often and I have to take my hat of to the people who fought to keep it as a 'river of grass'.

Thank God for PBS. Works of art such as this would never be produced for commercial television. We can't wait to make another trip West.

We recorded four and have just watched the first one -- incredible vistas and very interesting history. Beautiful.
