Great Sand Dunes National Park
Comments (6)We were there late last September. We took the train ride, south of Alamosa, (cumbrestoltec.com) into New Mexico and just loved it. The trees were in full color, especially the quakies. I'm enjoying this armchair trip with you!...See MoreView from Two Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park
Comments (3)Sadly to say, global warming is having a huge effect on Glacier National Park. The park was started in 1810, I believe and in 1850 there were 150 glaciers. Today there are only 35 and receding at an alarming rate. The scientists predict that there will be no active glaciers there by 2050. It is sad to think that my grandson will not be able to view this National Park as it is today. The changes will also impact on the ecosystems....See MoreBig Bend National Park?
Comments (20)Jinx - I'm so glad you mentioned Enchanted Rock! I have not thought of that places in ages, and have never actually BEEN, but it used to be on my "go there" list back when I was frequenting a climbing gym. That was so much fun, and the group I was training with was going to be making a field trip to Enchanted Rock to practice bouldering skills, but I wasn't able to be a part of that. These days, I wouldn't feel confident enough to do any climbing (or bouldering, really), but I'd still like to go there to hike. It looks like there are a lot of other hiking opportunities to be found in the Hill Country too. The Twig looks absolutely amazing! Wow, I would love to stay there! (Isn't that chandelier wonderful!) I mentioned Enchanted Rock to DH, in case he wanted to consider something a bit closer to home than Big Bend, but I think he's still pretty sold on trying to go to BB later next year. The Nuevo Terlingua casitas are stellar! If we go, we will likely choose a different accommodation than previously considered (so, not the adobe I shared earlier in this thread), having found a simple little 2-bedroom trailer very near the park entrance that would suit us well. We are staying in southern Colorado this summer, and I ALMOST thought we should just cancel that trip and go to BB instead, but then I went back to looking at photos and videos of the area where we'll be, and I absolutely have to go here again. Spent a lot of time in this area in my younger years, and really want to share it with DH. Weminuche Wilderness:...See MoreWaterton Lakes National Park, Alberta
Comments (9)I've stayed at the hotel shown in your photo Ida (Prince of Wales). It's an incredibly beautiful area but much of it was affected by the wildfires a few years ago. I remember they had a special team of fire fighters working to save the hotel. The fires got really close... the Visitor's Center just down the road burned. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/prince-of-wales-calgary-firefighters-1.4290763 ETA: I just read that 30 per cent of Waterton Lakes National Park was severely damaged, 70 per cent of the forested area was lost in the fires. We were only there one night while passing through. We did get up to Red Rock Canyon. We were there in late August 2016. We were traveling from Calgary down into Montana where we crossed the "Going to the Sun Road" (Glacier National Park) and eventually came back up into British Columbia. The whole area is spectacular. I can't recommend the "Going to the Sun Road" enough - breathtaking scenery I can't even describe. We were traveling with my elderly inlaws so we didn't do any hiking. My FIL has Parkinson's Disease so is a bit mobility limited, so it was more of a driving-around-looking-at-the-scenery trip. I think I still have some photos on my phone. Waterton Lakes National Park is on the Canadian side, and borders Glacier National Park on the American side. Between the two there would be an incredible selection of trails and things to see, so many waterfalls, wildlife (we saw buffalo and elk), etc....See MoreOutsidePlaying
