There's a rosa wichurana named Farquhar. Pink blend. Seems to be only available in posters.
Nasty thorns? A rosa eglanteria named Penzance.

Can it be magenta? Some of the rugosa roses fit the description of big and thorny. Say Roseraie de l'Häy or Hansa. Heavenly clove fragrance, too.

Baronne Prévost is pretty thorny, but it's a rich pink and not red. I'm sure there are some pretty thorny Hybrid Perpetuals that are dark red and thorny, and they'd have those good French Names. Of course, all of the Moss roses are seriously thorny, and a good dark one is Nuits de Young, perhaps her last name could be "de Young"?

Gertrude Jeckyll, baby! Large intensely fragrant flowers and huge NASTY thorns.

Robusta is thorny as they get and has brilliant red flowers.

I have Orfeo, a beautiful dark red rose that is extremely thorny. Last year Paula (Rosefolly) was helping me prune and she was working on Orfeo and she said she changed her mind about growing it after pruning it. The rose has wonderful fragrance, maybe you can work on the intoxicating perfume vs the stab in the back theme.

William Lobb comes to mind as being very nasty in the thorn department, is a deep crimson. Madame Wilma Lobb?

Nova Zembla (a sport of Conrad F. Myer) might answer your purpose. It is a rugosa hybrid with large, beautiful fragrant light pink flowers on thick twelve-foot canes like razor wire.

Bardou Job is has lots of really big thorns. It climbs with octopussy arms that grab and bite me everytime I prune. This rose is deep red with a wild unchained form.

And Bardou is soooo French. Oh, I must be thinking of Bardot.

Mutabilis is big; changes colors; and has some pretty vicious thorns. The name sounds strange and exotic too!

Orfeo of course! It really was both awful and beautiful, as well as fragrant and red. I had purchased it as a band, but gave it away after seeing Carol's up close. Too scary for me.

Oath5 - My vote would be for Mme Elisa de Vilmorin, Leveque 1864. Some call it a HT others a hybrid perpetual. I have it in my HP grouping. It is described in Dickerson "The Old Rose Advisor" by various historic entrees as: Carmine -rose. Flower large, full; color scarlet red, with tints of brown." Blood Red, Very large, handsome dark vermillion red, shaded brown." Like an amaranth peony. "Vigorous; branches short, furnished with stickers that are both short and hooked; leaves, dark green, often touched with yellow, flower of medium size, full; color crimson. " Double, deep crimson, fragrant with upright growth (3 X 3'); Also called a Hybrid Perpetual. "Vilmorin (Mme Elisa). - wife of Louis Leveque de Vilmorin, nee Bailly, associated with Maison Vilmorin [French Seedsman] from 1860 to 1866. A woman of great culture and intelligence. Produced a notable book Les Fraisiers."

So there Max - you have my vote and you are welcome to visit Mme Elisa (my two plants are 9 ft and upright now) on Memorial day to bid her very prickled personage homage!

Nick! What a nice surprise! I was thinking about you the other day actually. How are you?

I love that name, I love a lot of those names actually, think I might mesh them together. That would be wonderful, I'm definitely be setting aside time for us to come down, I must see your gardens next year! I think by then I'd know if my piece won anything at the contest I'm entering in for students.....so if I manage to get something it will be a double celebration!

By the way, Nick, Leda and Duchesse are doing wonderful, last I saw of them ( when I was home) Leda was sending up a new cane that was itty bitty and just coming up when we planted it in August.

Even though I don´t like close encounters with Gertrude Jekylls hooked thorns and the few pints of blood she has clawed out of my arms and legs over the years, she looks almost friendly compared to Othello NASTY thorny canes: I went outside to take this photo today:

Look up the nasty beautiful wingthorn Rosa sericea ptericantha now those are serious razor wire thorns.

Labrea, that's exactly what I was ready to say, Madame La Wingthorn, I love it, strange, mysterious, arm'd and prepared for quick flight, and those very red thorns are spectacular! My plant is still small but I love this oddly beautiful rose! My imagination is playful visualizing this unique french lady or is she really a lady. we will have to read your screenplay to find out. Does she have long lush black hair and steel blue eyes that see the un-see-able?

bodica, you got her description down pat! Dark hair, pale skin, blues eyes, and a vain, cold but sensual demeanor!

She's a very complex character, at least for a villain.

I also see her in a corset to keep her tiny waist 18 inches or less, a control issue. Her strict self disipline- admired by others lacking insight to understand- it conceals the vast black hole through her soul. Exquisite on the outside, but what torment she hides with in her flawless porceline skin? A beautiful Doberman watches her when ever she steps out.....
