Big honking rose / roses to eat a garage (Zone 7a)

Hey all, I live in zone 7a/6b (I know we've been reclassified as 7a, but every now and then we get a cold winter so I typically plant things that will survive in 6b unless really well sheltered, this is in the MidAtlantic region).

I have a lovely spot that's 8 by 20 feet and I'd like to use the spot to eat my carriage house (it's an actual carriage house, it used to have carriages and horses in it). The structure is quite romantic in appearance having barn doors and lattice windows.

The flowerbed is irrigated and gets full sun.

I love Paul's Himalayan Musk but it's a once bloomer. So I could plant that, and then maybe plant a clematis vine to grow through it.

Otherwise, I am open to suggestions.

Goodness, what a wonderful opportunity! There are lots of possibilities. My first thought was Buff Beauty - HMF says it is cold hardy to zone 5b, and it is a gorgeous rose - the soft colors would go well with PHM.

Don't forget folks that she is in zone 7a. Although the difference between zones 7a & 7b is slight, it could make a difference in regards to this most tender of the Tea-Noisettes. Ronda, You can't have your cake and eat it too. If you want MN, then you've got to take a risk. Trust me, I understand how you feel. It IS a gorgeous rose with intoxicating fragrance and has more mystique than an X-Man movie. I lusted after it for years until I finally faced the fact that I could not have it. I even gave up on putting it in my Mom's zone 7b garden because it is too high maintenance of a rose. Patrick

We have so much poison ivy here that preschoolers can accurately identify it! Great idea, though! And I think my yard is a favored pass - through bcs for some bizarre horticultural reason, my wild area is poison ivy-free and blackberry free! I tried encouraging the holly back there to into the "bald" spits, but it just won't. Holly has a mind of its own, preferring to grow up under my screened porch and garage wall ; ) The wild blackberries refuse to be managed, too. Have tried to get them to grow up the paths, but to no avail. And they are fierce! I usually look like I have been in a multi cat fight after tangling with those thorny beasts. Am hoping to get a former Youth Group kid to dig up a bit on the hill before he leaves for college, and then supplement with Christopher's wheelbarrow recipe and get a couple of Darlow's Enigma in before a couple of weeks are out. I am hoping that will at least give me an idea if this will work. I'm planning on putting tomato cages over the young plants to prevent trampling. Have an email into Long Ago to see if she has any DE. It's a 4hr drive, but might be better than stressing a plant by shipping it in August heat.

I've hesitated to reply because I don't know! only want to sympathize with your dilemma. At our old house growing young roses up a bit in pots was basically a failure,because of lack of light, but here at the new house I can see that it's very different: plenty of morning sun and afternoon shade. So this fall I'm thinking to pot up all new roses,but just for one season. I, too, find growing roses in pots too much work and just can't keep up. Like Kes Z, I am much more concerned about losing roses to heat and drought (I'm in Italy, about a zone 8,but my garden has a south-western exposure, so it's protected from North winter winds, but subjected to terribly brutal summer sun). Still, I've always mounded/protected baby bare-root roses planted out in fall/winter, just in case. I guess in general I'd vote to plant them out in the ground,especially the larger ones,but I think I might protect them. One way that I've done this successfully is by using pieces of styrofoam-you know, those odd-shaped pieces that are used in packaging so many things? I break these up to smaller sizes, if necessary, andmake a sort of little corral around the canes of the rose,holding the pieces in place with stones,earth,whatever. Then I fill in the top a bit with other pieces,holding these in place with sticks,teepee-style,or use wine corks. I like this way of protecting because the materials are efficient insulators, but also sterile so bacteria and fungus aren't encouraged.You'd only mount these potective teepees once the temperature really drop.If some are still very, very tiny, you could keep those few in their pots.

Here's the shade above my Blossomtime, before I had a tree cut down. Pretty shady for good repeat bloom, but no doubt the plant would do better with more sun. You might look in to the Canadian Explorer roses for extra hardy ones. Rosecanadian could probably recommend some. For zone 6b most of those I mentioned should be ok, but unusually cold winters can do some damage anywhere. In my zone , zone 7a, we've had temps down to four degrees and prolonged freezes and most of my roses came through pretty well. I don't usually get big die back on my climbers. I'm in NC piedmont. I tend to guess that your intense sun will help make up for some shade too.

I'm in a similar zone as you, in north central Virginia. You could go into the Tea Noisette family for repeat bloom and carriage house eating capability. Reve d'Or, Lamarque, Jean Desprez, etc. ... especially if the location is a bit sheltered from winter winds. Paul's Himalayan Musk wants to climb and drape, so it's well suited to train into a tree. Bloom time for Paul's is only about two-three weeks for me. Darlow's Enigma is a possibility, as I have seen it up to the second story of a house in Maryland. (Both of these have incredibly sharp thorns, just so you know.)

I'm growing 'Open Arms' on an outbulding, with two other roses, and it appears to be well up to the job of covering the space. It flowers a LOT and the foliage is really disease resistant. I got mine from EuroDesert before they closed. HMF says that it's available from Heirloom.

How about "Peggy Martin"? Says that it's a once-bloomer, but my established plant is never without at least some flowers. Added bonus is that it looks incredible if it can drape a little, and it's thornless.

OMG, you've got a lot of choices, I think! I'm not sure about cold-hardiness,however. There are a lot of ramblers that could fill the bill. I, too, have Paul's H.Musk,only find it's bloom period too short. But it sure is beautiful...
