I may lose all my roses too

I've had RRD in another garden, so I know how to identify it. This week I found RRD on Lady Elsie May on the south side of my yard and Living Easy on the west. Lady Elsie May is on the edge of the patio with good air circulation on all sides. My neighbors on the sw side planted seedless blackberries, which might be the source. Many of my neighbors grow roses, so it could have come from any of them. With our winds coming from the west, I feel like a mother who has a house full of children dying of AIDS , hoping researchers will come up with cure before it is too late. I pruned the infected canes to the ground and hope for the best. Probably no hope in persuading my neighbors to destroy their blackberries.

lainey2, I am sorry for the loss of your roses. This post is very discouraging. It seems that there are several members here with gardens affected by RRD, and then there's the article that gave such a high opinion of using RRD as a control method. I am really wondering what the next few years will hold for us rose lovers.

Ciao wayblinkfaster, So where are you? Canada is a big country, you know. I think you went too far in killing your extra plants. Next time, you might consider donating them to food banks, churches, or getting involved in a gardening group and participating in some plant swaps. I grow lots of extra tomato plants and I always find homes for them. Community gardens are also desperate for plants most days. Cheers and good for you on your successes, Julianna

Hi first welcome to the flooring forum Usually the installer is right its exotic wood come in a deferent size of length BUT you should have more 3" then 2", (70%-30%) I donÂt think it will look bad, so if youÂre willing to go back to the store and find your salesmen and tell him to find a solution for youÂ.otherwise just ask the installer to "play" with the length when he installing it floor

Heated floors would have been the first and best solution, but that's difficult to retrofit on a concrete floor. Second best is to plumb in a couple of powered circulation ducts, even if you have to encase them in soffits. They will pull the heat down from the ceiling through the ductwork and exhaust it at floor level. Third best option is to put back the ceiling fans. The fourth option is to use the portable fans, which as you've discovered, is noisy and unattractive. Fifth best option is heated slippers and an extra sweater.

Well said, Lin. :-) Jord, due to the number of tubers you have, you might consider putting a layer of moist (not wet) potting mix in the bottom of a big plastic tub, putting a thick layer of tubers, moist mix, tubers, moist mix... Think parfait. "Everyone likes parfait." Top it all off with a couple loose shopping bags, to keep some of the moisture in but to not invite mold. Don't put the lid on. Check in three weeks, then pull out each tuber to examine it for an eye or sprout. As Lin said, you'd be amazed where eyes pop up when you could have sworn the tuber was a dud. I have gone through my 'dud' crate four times in the last couple months, every time taking out around a third of the tubers that decided to sprout. Granted, these are mostly tubers that I saw potential eyes in the fall, but there was a good number of "oh, what the heck, let's wait and see" tubers, too. Good luck, CiCi

I'm not giving up yet. Maybe eventually some varieties will develop resistence. Maybe they will develop a cure. VA Tech has RRD in their rose garden. They are shovel pruning and planting marigolds. Marigolds are rumored to have some mite repellent. Kind of like giving a cup to herbal tea to an AIDS patient. Sigh.

I'm going through this also. The west side of my house is full of RRD-infected roses; half of which are newly-planted this year. Like you, I pruned off the ugly canes but I've resigned myself to having DH dig out the anchor of the group, Graham Thomas, who is 15 years old. There's just no saving him, it's that bad. That's tomorrow's project.

I've already started researching foundation plantings that can withstand the hot summer sun but will not be roses. I can't spend $ on roses and fertilizer only to dig them up later in the summer. My biggest fear is that I'll end up having RRD rampage through the rest of my gardens and spreading amuck among my 300 roses.

I am so sorry for all of you with RRD. What a heartbreaker. It is SO sad there is not a cure for this.

I've had it off and on since I first grew roses in the mid 80's when it claimed my first two climbers. It's always sad to loose a rose that you have worked so hard to nurture and scary to think how many others you may loose if you didn't catch it in time. But there is some hope. Two of the roses that I cut the infected cane off of down to the graft have shown no further symptoms and have gone on to live long lives in the garden. One of them is Our Lady Of Guadalupe. Do you think there's something to the name? Good luck to you.

IÂm sorry to hear that Lainey. Maybe it wouldnÂt be as bad you think. I will keep my fingers crossed from you. If you by change do lose everything I suppose you could look at it as a fresh start.
