Talk to me about Oklahoma, please!
Comments (20)I have two Oklahomas which I've had for three years now. I both love them and hate them. The fragrance is amazing, the blooms are huge and velvety, and when they are young they are a lovely red to burgundy color. However, the blooms fade VERY quickly into that terrible magenta, they also don't last long in general, so they are not a good cut flower. My plants also refuse to bush out, but rather grow tall, thick-stemmed and straight. The one in full sun is about six feet tall now. But they do seem to be vigorous for me anyway, and they bounce back quickly from heavy pruning (which I do prune them down in the winter because I don't want them to become enormous). The climate where I live is much cooler than where you are, but it does rain continuously for about 9 months out of the year, and the Oklahomas don't seem to mind it. They also seem to be blackspot resistant at least in my garden, even though neighboring plants have gotten blackspot. So there's pros and cons. Overall I like them enough that I won't get rid of them, but I do prefer the longer-lasting blooms on a bushier plant, and had I known more about Oklahoma before I planted them I probably would have chosen something else. Repeat bloom on mine is pretty quick though, as long as I keep up with cutting off spent flowers....See MoreAnother Buck rose: Sunbonnet Sue. Please tell me about this one.
Comments (9)Thanks for the tidbits of info. Mgleason, your experience doesn't exactly make me want to rush out and get this one. But thanks for the caution, anyway. Better to be disappointed now when its hypothetical rather than after I've bought it, planted it, and cared for it for a season. Re. Lisa and Countryside Roses, she actually invited me and family over on the 4th. We made a day of it and went to the beach that morning, then took a leisurely tour of Hwy 90 along the shore back to Louisiana. Lisa was very nice. She kept offering us more plants. Very generous person. I sent her a list of the roses I have and asked her to please let me know of any she's curious about. I love to root roses for co-workers, neighbors, and such, and since the big Hurricane, Her little business has been struggling. So many problems with insurance companies and trying to rebuild after the flood and wind damage. As for the roses, she had Alec's Red and Prairie Sunrise for me. Both are babies but already have little flower buds on them....See MorePlease tell me what brand & color paver to use, I'm so confused
Comments (2)shelly 2, I see your questions going unanswered so I respond with just an observation. Sometime activity spawns more activity/responses. I think color is very personal and hard to given anything more than standard "color wheel" advice. I think: If you like it, buy it! If you're having trouble visualizing, then I'm with you. Colors on the micro-level (chips) and the macro-level (house, rooms, floors.....) sometimes don't match up in my eye. Good luck, and given your insights already shared I'm sure you do just fine following what you like in colors. As for brand, I have even less to share, I have some pavers that were installed by my "deck guy" about 15 years ago and they're holding up fine. I don't know anything about them other than to say they have an old soft look, and are red/earth tones. They get heavy foot traffic and regardless of their "soft" look, they look as good as when installed, to my poor memory....See MoreTell a story about your picture
