My Heartfelt Appreciation

This has been a great year for my garden because I have learned so much and have received such grand support here. I feel like I know my garden much better now, through reading about how you all feel and care for your own gardens. There is so much I want to try next season. I'm also excited to get some of the new roses that you all have made me aware of and will add next spring. So while the gardening part of the year is coming to a close (though in CA we still have another two months of decent blooms) :), I am gratefully pondering the embarrassment of riches, in terms of advice, stories and wisdom I have found here and want to send a heartfelt thank you, to you all.

I have read advice on so many threads that I've been helped by and I am inspired. From my own threads, I learned to find more time for the garden when I was at a loss, feeling like I was missing out. I know it seems like I should be more clever, to find ways myself to free my schedule, but simple advice like having dinner out there, reading out there, getting up earlier to have an extra hour in the garden and calling off work occasionally, has been very useful to me.

I have so many great suggestions on violetizing my garden more too. I love how all of you came to the rescue to write about your experiences with the roses in this colorway. It may seem silly, but it is heartwarming to me. I am so grateful that if I need more purple, you throw me all the purple I can handle.

I have a fear of spiders and I have seen plenty in the garden this summer, but reading you all write about how spiders have an important role in the garden has made me see them in a new light, even though I won't sit next to one. I must say, I did not see one mosquito in the garden this year and very few flies. I guess I can thank the spiders for that luxury.

And there is so much more that I've been helped with in my rosy world. It would take so much time to mention.

There are so many interesting people here and I can intuit what kind of people they are by what they write about roses and gardens. I hope you all come back next season and post your advice again. For me, it is never stressful to come here, just relaxing and easy. Just get a tall glass of lemonade and sit in someone's cyber-garden awhile. My parents grew up in the French Quarter of New Orleans and I get that sense of ease and grace and hospitality here. I've gotten used to so many of you and there are days where I miss some people if they don't post for awhile.

So I would like to send all of you this big letter of appreciation, for the advice, for the support and most of all, for the kindness I have been shown. XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO

Well, that was such a lovely sentiment and I agree. I'm more an avid lurker than poster, but I certainly have felt a kinship to all and miss those that no longer post here. I suppose this can be expected as we all evolve, but none the less, I too, have gained immeasurably from this forum. My first mail order rose was The Jefferson Rose due to Randy's enabling and then Tamora due to Harryshoe and Jeri's knowledge/reassurances and on and on and on. I to am most appreciative and thankful. Linda

Juliet and Linda, I couldn't agree more. I, too, have come to see and appreciate all of "these antique rose people" as the sweetest, most gracious and helpful people I have ever known. And the best thing is that it rubs off! Pretty soon you find yourself being helpful to others even while still being in need of help yourself. It's a wonderful place to bask in the warmth and affection of lovely people who love roses and even better than that to be accepted just as we are. I guess this is just a great place to pay it forward.

Why is it that on this forum in particular you always get two snotty answers for every helpful one? Or hardly any answers at all. I was about to start a post asking what the designers on this site consider an appropriate request and something they would respond to. I posted a request asking for feedback and only two people were so kind as to respond (they have my heartfelt appreciation!). PS: cdjr. I have been totally unsuccessful at getting the software you suggested to install - I tried it on my home computer and work computer and couldn't get it to work either time. Is there anything special you remember doing?

You are most welcome. But, I feel like I came out on the better end of our trades. Postmaster has to wait until after blooming is finished. Yours came from the last cuttings I will take before the mother plant finishes blooming. He knows he will be getting them at the end of the summer so he's not anxious. BTW, he watches for my envelopes I drop in the inside box on the way to work. He pulls them and hand cancels!!!!

Thanks for starting this thread. I nearly missed it, though! My family extends a huge heartfelt thanks to all of our military men, women and their families. My dad did 3 tours in VN (Marine Corps) and, as a child, I didn't really understand there was a chance he might not come back home. I am very appreciative of our service men and women. There is a retired marine (I don't know him) who lives on one of the roads I travel daily. He flies a Marine Corps flag and an American flag. I noticed his MC flag was all tattered and weather-beaten. I bought a new one and left it on his stoop with a thank you note from "a Marine Corps "brat"." That weekend he replaced the MC flag with the new one. I see it flying every day and it makes me feel good that I could do something in some small way for one of our servicemen. I'll check back to see if anyone posts any blog links. Great question Jessy!! I'd love to read some of the writings.

Juliet, what a great post! I have so many of the same experiences. This year is the first year that my procrastination self got into OGRs. (As an aside, I took an adult ed class once on 'time management' (hee, hee, hee). While I still have the same time management skill set, I did learn why. Perfectionism leads to Procrastination which leads to Paralysis. To those that this applies, saved you $20 ;-)

Anyway, the 'GramHat' siren song of Jeri's finally got me to get off my kester and Vintage was my drug of choice since they're on my coast - and now three orders this year am not sorry, they've been awesome. Oh, yeah, and let's not forget the one from Ashdown. The scientist in me figured if I just plug in to their search engine strong scent and good rebloom, I'd have a good starting list. Then on top of the list I put the 'found' ones figuring they'd be the most resistant and drought tolerant. This was a great 'starting' point (I've so had a lot of stress this year. If you don't buy plants when you're under stress, raise your hand... ok, you there in the back, why not?). I also found that using this strategy gave me a list that pretty much corresponds with most of your near and dear. I did good! ;-)

Now I've got a great 'stable' as my basis. I can't wait for next spring, but even more, I can't wait for the one after that!!! Thanks everybody!

Juliet, that was such a gracious post, and I think you've voiced many of the sentiments we all have. We were all once new to this forum and I have to say joining and meeting the wonderfully helpful people here has been immensely rewarding. Now, after a bit more than two years, I can't even imagine my life without the forum.

What is so beautiful about it isn't only the idea itself, but what it says about the person who utters it. Gratitude and appreciation are always shining qualities. And I suppose that's the link with Juliet's post.

Juliet, you so eloquently expressed the gratitude I have felt for this forum for a long time. Thanks for posting.

I talk to DH about my friends from this forum so much that even he feels like you are all his friends, too. :)

My garden would not be as pretty, as 'rosy', or give me as much pleasure without this forum. The information, the inspiration and the enabling are priceless.
