I called my brother this morning; he is my favorite veteran (3 tours of VN, 5 purple hearts, 1 silver star). Then I went down the street to my neighbor vet with a basket of muffins. They all deserve our respect and thanks.

Thanks, Jessica, for the reminder and the post. Dad was in Korea, of course. Uncle Marty in Vietnam. I have two nephews in Afghanistan and Ashley's best friend is in Iraq. Elery's son Chris was wounded in Kosovo.

Bless all those currently serving and keep them safe until they can come home to us, and a big "Thank You" to those who have already done their service and earned our respect and gratitude.

Thanks for starting this thread. I nearly missed it, though!

My family extends a huge heartfelt thanks to all of our military men, women and their families. My dad did 3 tours in VN (Marine Corps) and, as a child, I didn't really understand there was a chance he might not come back home. I am very appreciative of our service men and women.

There is a retired marine (I don't know him) who lives on one of the roads I travel daily. He flies a Marine Corps flag and an American flag. I noticed his MC flag was all tattered and weather-beaten. I bought a new one and left it on his stoop with a thank you note from "a Marine Corps "brat"." That weekend he replaced the MC flag with the new one. I see it flying every day and it makes me feel good that I could do something in some small way for one of our servicemen.

Yes to all of the above; it brings tears to my eyes whenever I think of the sacrifices our young men and women are making. We fly the flag every day, but it's so little. Our vets come home to medical and economical challenges that would be hard for anyone to face. Whatever we can do to help them and their families should be a priority.

I have been blessed with being a between wars sort....my 2 uncles served in WWII...my father was too old. My DH too young for Korea and too old for Nam...but he did serve during the cold war and the cuban crisis.
My brother escaped Nam because of a hearing problem.
But I remember my mother writing every day to her brother her brother in law and a friend. I remember my grandmother and the star in the window, reminding the world that she had a son in the Army....and her worry about him

I use to spend Veterans Day with my father (WWII Marine...2 purple hearts) I loved and admired him with every fiber of my body & soul! I made a apple pie yesterday (his favorite). I remeber when I was a kid he'd tell me stories of the war and his time in Japan...he would tease me a ask me questions in Japanese ( he was a translator)...I never knew how much Id miss those stories! I also prayed for him and all the American soldiers who are true HERO'S!!!!

I had the day off of work due to our Vets and last night my mother came to dinner with two boxes of old photos that my dad had stored in the back of some closet. Many were of dad during WWII in the Army-AirForce. It was a poignant way to remember our vets and my father's service. He has some great photos of everyday life, bombed-out ruins and memorabilia from meal cards on board the troop ship, Italian lire, membership cards to different groups that provided R&R to the troops etc. There's a very funny "document" that's supposed to be Hitler's last will and testament. I'll try and scan it and post for all to read.

Dad's still with us, but unfortunately I doubt he'd remember very much. He's now living in a board & care facility with dementia and other health issues.
