Very pretty pictures and thank you for your thankyou! Isn't it wonderful that we can all share our love of roses with each other? Sharing makes the joy complete. I so enjoy everyone's company!

Gosh, your roses are SO beautiful. I love looking at everyone's pictures, they're inspiring and give me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. (...and make me want to add a bunch more, too)

Here's an Iowan's 2 cents worth: We have a 15' x 20' pond with 3 waterfalls on the north side of the house, totally exposed to any-and-all winter weather. Using a (Walmart) bubbler full time keeps a hole about 2' open at all times. We keep a floating tank heater in the water close to the bubbler's open hole but don't plug it in unless temps are going to be below zero for more than a week-that's our ace in the hole for emergency use only. Our pond is 3' deep except for an area under one of the waterfalls that dips down to 4'. The bubbler is used on the opposite end and is close to a 2' shelf - we didn't want to bother the goldfish at the deep end with the bubbles. I'm going to raise the bubbler line up to about 20" from the surface this winter, I'm thinking it'll keep more surface open that way. Tried running the waterfalls thru the winter but between the ice forming from the cold temps and the north winds blowing the water out of the streams, we don't even blink an eye now when we turn off the falls in November. We can drive to Sioux Falls if we want to see water running under falls in the winter - LOL!! All 50+ fish survive every year. For the first few years of the pond, we did the "keep them in a stock tank in the garage thru the winter" thing until our BEST friends refused to have a "Fish Moving and Dinner Nite". No amount of food or beverages would get them to help catch the fish and carry buckets from the pond to the garage @#@# Here's to a balmy winter and early spring!!!

You know wintersowing is addictive when we start talking about it in October. I just placed a seed order with Thompson-Morgan. Anyone else feel like the T& M catalog is the "Playboy" magazine of seed catalogs? I prefer 2 liter bottles and milk jugs. I usually sow the seeds I want to keep in the milk jugs and the give aways in the 2 liters. Its visually easier to separate and I can transport more of the smaller containers. Brenda does have a point about the moisture control potting soil. They can get waterlogged and rot the seeds. Especially in the earlier part of the winter when it isn't hot. I have had better luck having my containers off the ground or on a patio if possible. We had a wet winter a couple of years ago and my jugs were covered in mud and couldn't drain and therefore the seeds drowned/rotted. I start with my hardy perennials, next hardy annuals, then half hardy perennials and then tender annuals. By that time you can actually start thinking about sowing the seeds outside but I never know where I will need my plants so it is easier for me to move a jug around until I find the right spot. Plus I can't tell a weed seed from a wanted seed especially if it is an unfamiliar plant. I remember one year I pulled most of my columbine seedlings because I thought it was clover. We were fortunate here. My grafted peach/plum/apriocot tree as several tiny peaches and apricots and my apples are at marble size right now. We did get a few cold nights, but none that were below 32 degrees. I probably could have planted the first of May, but always wait until now for planting and transplanting. Many years ago, when I was a kid, margerine was just introduced to the market. It had a white color and small blob of concentrated yellow color that you would mush into it to color it yellow. The Feds were unsure about margerine and the coloring process used way back, so it was packed seperate from the margerine. Even back then, it was probably safer to use butter, health wise. The Butter Buds (dried butter flavor) and the I Can't Believe Its Not Butter, are the closest you can get to butter taste. I use both in baked potatoes and corn on the cob. The Butter Buds thicken the melted margerine a little so its more like a sauce. Using gallon jars for pickles is fine, but tyhey cannot be BWB or PC in that size. Instead, a salt brine and fermented cuke would be a better choice. The jars need constant refrigeration though and will not be safe if left out beyond a month or so. I make half sours in 1/2 gallon Ball jars. They fit nicly in my fridge.
