I'm glad you and your roses are bouncing back.
But you really might want to have a specialist check the joint that bent funny...just to make sure no ligaments were torn.

Celeste glad to hear you are ok - my god what an adventure! Please go see a doctor to get your leg checked if you have not already done so.

I was also laughing at your description of how worried you were about the roses - that would be my first reaction too!

I echo the others, please have a doctor check you over to make sure you are truly ok. Loved your concern for the roses though, shows how crazy we all can be! Hope you feel better quickly!

Celeste, it was painful just to read what happened. Those
rose thorns are the bain of all rose gardeners. I'm glad
you stayed so cheerful after all that 'cause I would be
crying(LOL).

Celeste - if getting punctured isn't bad enough by itself - please remember that those little thorns could "inoculate" you with some nasty soilborne fungus stuff! And have you had a tetanus shot recently?
Sorry - can't help being superaware of this. Had a fungus from rugosa thorn prick that was longterm and hard to diagnose (but quick to cure when it was).

OUCH! Those injuries must hurt something fierce. For what-it-is-worth I do understand where you are coming from. There was once this rosarian name Brenda who used to frequent the forums. Poor thing died of cancer. But even when she was sick from the illness and chemo, all she could think about was her roses. Such passion! Out of love for Brenda a group of forum friends got together to help maintain her plants during her last days. I actually cried when Jean-TN posted a pic of Brenda sitting on the porch while watching the others labor in her garden. Rosarians truly are blessed people. Brenda's favorite rose was CAREFREE BEAUTY.

So you are in good company. Wear those bruises with pride! Oh and take some Advil for the swelling.

Glad you're ok. I've fallen a few times into rose bushes, but not down a hill into a rose bush:)

Hope you and your roses are on the mend. A tetanus shot would be a good idea - you just never know.

As luck would have it, I had to go to work today and couldn't take the day off....a LONG 9-hr. day chasing toddlers...I'm a nanny. I couldn't get to the doctor because of my work hours and tomarrow we are leaving early to go on a mini-vacation for 4 days that we have planned on for months. (Wouldn't you just know it...DH and I haven't taken time off in 3 years and the reservations are all made). I will just have to limp around and wearing shorts is out since I look like I had a fight with a wildcat! LOL

But all is well in my rose kingdom tonight. A little pain, a few tears, and a million Japanese Beetles later.....I love my roses more than ever and am so glad
none of them got hurt. I even limped out there tonight
to tell them "goodbye" for the next 4 days, silly me.
That's the longest I've ever left them.
I hope they miss me.

I just wanted to echo those who recommend going to a doctor. My recent experience made me more aware of that. Less than a month ago, I tripped over an uneven sidewalk in front of my house as I was walking my dogs. I fell on my right arm, but, since it didn't swell, and since I had never had a broken bone before, I didn't go to the doctor. Meanwhile, my arm turned purple and I could hardly move it. I thought it was muscle pain. Five days later, with urging from friends and family, I finally went in and got an x-ray. Suffice it to say, my elbow was broken and displaced, and I am in physcial therapy now. Had I not gone in, I might have ended up with "frozen elbow", unable to move it in either direction! Now, I am trying to fertilize and trim my roses for the fall show - with my left arm!

If we don't take care of the ourselves - who's going to take care of our roses? Hope you get better soon!

OMG. I am so glad you seem to be okay. It is always said accidents are the worst at home.

Gosh I didn't know many of you had been coming here for so long that you have a friend who died of cancer. My eyes teared up over that.

Looks like you have had a good healthy dose of nurturing and mothering already but I do hope you recover quickly.

However let me say your roses are lovely! I would suggest that if you do nothing else take a nice hot bath, drink a glass of wine and try not to worry about your garden while you're gone. Roses are tough and apparently so are you! Have a safe trip.

Glad you were not hurt worse. Glad your roses survived too- they must be tough, like you. Tough when you can't find the time to go to the doctor. Keep an eye out for any symptoms that seem to be more than just bruises. Don't be too busy to rest up!
BTW, what is that gorgeous pink rose bush immediately behind you? It is really striking. Looks like you have some great roses to show for all your hard work. Brandy

that is "Paul Neyron" behind me in the photo. He is on his fall flush right now and even though this photo was taken in June, he looks about the same right now. He takes a "rest" in July & Aug. but comes back with a second round of these huge, beautiful blossoms. Thanks for asking.

Celeste you sure are a devoted and determined rose grower. Good for you. I think I know how you feel, LOL. Been there and done that. I hope your babies keep blooming well into fall to reward you for your efforts. Geeeeez Celeste, I though I was the only one who did stuff like that! LOL!! Glad you are "ok." But I want to echo everyone else who has suggested you see a doctor, "just because!" And when WAS the last time you had a tetanous shot? If it's more than 10 yrs you really oughta get one! Also, I might mention, you very well might come up with aches and pains later on that you can't really explain. I fell in my garden over a yr ago and didn't really get "hurt." But, a few months later I began getting horrible hip pains, or more accurately, thigh pains. This has gone on for well over a yr. I seem to have developed what my doctor called (some fancy-named-) bursitis, and nothing seems to make it feel better. Pain pills and muscle relaxers, and some "occasional" booze only make the pain go away temporarily. I just hope you don't get anything like that from your fall!! Take care of yourself, girl!!

Celeste, oohh, ouwch! Sorry to hear about your fall. A nasty shocker to you. I really felt for you, as I too have had a bad fall in the garden. I had stretched myself and my legs into a border to do some deadhead, stepped backwards caugh the back of my foot wearing nonsensical "flipflops on a rock. I could feel myself falling backwards down cement steps I guess my mind raced and with an almighty twist of my body (to avoid landing at the bottom on my head) I bounced on my ribs off a rock wall and landed in the concrete on my back. I heard cracks. I could not move. I thought my back was broken. I lay there for some time. My husband was on night shift, had not long gone to bed with a sleeping tablet. I could not scream it was too painful. Eventually I made funny noises enough that he heard and came down. We should have phoned for an amublance as he could virtually not get me on my feet. We called a friend who took me to an emercency clinic. The out come resulsts were three broken ribs. Thank God it was not my back. But whow! I will never forget the pain.
Celeste I do hope you are recovering well now and if you should still have any aches and pains, please go and get it checked out.
Love your pretty Jesica roses. I have three of them, and though not talked about too often here. It is a gem. A smaller Ausin which is wonderful in the front of a border, beautiful colour and fragrance, abundant and what I really like about it, is that it is upright. Looks like you are enjoying yours too. That is a gorgeous picture of you, I know I have seen it before and you were probably asked at the time, but would you mind telling me what are the two roses to the back left of you and immediately behind. They look fabulous.

You never told us who finished watering your babies after that painful accident. My guess it was DH who thoughtfully checked the roses that broke the fall...if only they could retract those thorns when they saw Mommie flying through the air straight at them!

Hope your healing is coming along nicely. I am fairly new to growing roses; at age 59, I am only in my second year but have close to 60 plants. I have two low retaining walls that I step up on almost daily to tidy the roses and plans to add more roses to a slope. I am mindful that I need to arrange ease of access to reduce risk of falling especially for my later years!

Recently, I put one of those foot high green metal fences in front of the roses for adornment. One day while standing on the wall, I leaned forward, got my foot tangled in the dang thing, lost my balance and fell to the ground- luckily only about 2 feet onto mulch over stones. But I did bang my head and shoulder. No lasting injury except to my dignity. The fence is now removed. I am now thinking more carefully about my garden planning.

WOW....I got back from our little trip late Tues. night and I couldn't believe all the responses and concern here. Rose lovers really are the nicest people in the world! THANK YOU everyone for your words of advise and concern. I posted my "accident" story because I thought it was kind of funny how I was more worried about my roses than myself and thought I'd share what a rose-nut I have become. I didn't expect so many people to be so concerned & caring. You guys are the BEST!

So here's an update....
we went on our little trip as planned. It was very painful to walk or stand (or bend my leg) but I was determined to enjoy our well-deserved & long-awaited 4 days off. People stared at me and then at DH everywhere we went because of the bruises, scraped arms & legs, scratches, etc....I looked like a battered wife or like I had a fight with a mountain lion...LOL. My son and his wife (newlyweds) joined us so it was fun spending time with them. I am still sore and I have a massive bruise that covers the entire outer side of my thigh but I am on the mend. We did quite a lot of standing & walking on our trip which was painful but maybe that was a good thing that I kept moving. I'm a pretty tough chick. My rose-thorn puncture wounds are healing as are the scraped arms and legs.

I wanted to share some pictures from our trip. As luck would have it, after weeks of dry weather it rained much of the time. But we enjoyed ourselves anyways and were glad for the rain that our roses desperately needed.
We have been to Newport, Rhode Island many times before to visit the Mansions (we have a membership) but this was our first visit to the Green Animals Topiary Garden. Here are few shots from there....these were taken in the pouring rain but the garden was still lovely.
