Accidently Broke my Canna While Planting
Comments (2)Thank you for the response! I inspected the pieces and it does appare that there is a growing point on one piece. Couldn't find one on the other. But I'm thinking I will plant it anyway and see what happens. I am glad to know I haven't completely killed this canna. I'm in zone 9. Its a little too cold here right now for planting outdoors. So I figured I would get a head start and plant them in pots indoors by a sunny window and move them outside when it gets warmer....See MoreNeed advice, damaged roses while on vacation
Comments (12)Well, nothing better than turning to this fantastic forum for help. Thank you all for your great advice! Three buckets of alfalfa tea are already brewing, right now heading to the nursery for fish emulsion and the pruners are ready. I'll start by pruning each by 1/3 to see what happens. This is a densely populated urban residential area and I haven't heard of or seen deer but this area of the neighborhood is new to me and I'll check with the neighbors. I’ll also check with them about chili thrips. Nothing else was eaten except slightly crape myrtles in the back which made me think of JBs but they obviously concentrated on several of my roses. I noticed that those with white or yellowish blooms were largely spared. I also wonder if this could be some kind of aggressive caterpillar... The damage is extensive but I'm glad to read that it's not fatal for my roses....See MoreWhat sort of issues have arisen while planting roses?
Comments (8)Aaron, I believe the Native American wisteria is considered non-invasive. Unfortunately I would consider it non fragrant which is the entire reason I would grow it. I had the invasive one which transplanted itself from my neighbors magnificent species. My yard is already enough work without that headache and I was able to eradicate it. But then the new neighbors took out the one across the street and now I'm left with no wysteria! I might suggest you see if any local Gardens have the native non-invasive form and see how you like it when it is in bloom....See Moreadvice on rose gardening while having small baby
Comments (13)Hi Nicole! You have great ideas and there's good advice here. If you normally need to water in a regular basis, then I enthusiastically encourage your suggestion to place soaker hoses and use them. I know some people have attached timers to soaker hoses. Even better, if you can afford it ( in time through DIY or in money to hire out), install a drip or sprinkler watering system that you can set on a timer (and just monitor to be sure it's not too much or two little water). Added plus, there are lots of options that will help you use water more wisely too (great for those of us with summer dry seasons). Like others said, don't worry too much about fertilizing right now...if you really want to, take the time to spread a good compost mulch that will break down slowly and only need one application. Or just don't worry about it this year! You have a sweet baby after all! Enjoy being outside in your garden with your baby. They'll love the Shanice to safely explore as they get more mobile. Next year will be even more fun since you'll have a toddler and they could "help" you pick tomatoes or berries or non prickly/non poisonous flowers. It's been a real joy to share my garden with my kids (now 5 and 7). They loved "helping" from about 18 months through preschool especially....See Morepink rose(9b, FL )
