Bands planted now in Maryland zone 6/7?

Hi there. I made an error on my vintage order and didn't specify a ship date. I've never lost a band (and I've ordred lots!) but I've never planted this late - they'll come on the 20th of Oct. Should I see if I can change my ship date, or will they be OK protected in the ground?

It all depends on varieties. I lost many bands planted in fall, but also had success with many others. Bands of hardy varieties (species, rugosas, gallicas, etc) never failed. Teas, chinas planted in fall fail 100%. Austins, Bucks, FLs, etc usually have mixed results. I still buy tender bands in fall sometimes, but plant them in gallon pots and winterize in garage. Works much better this way. Hardy ones get planted in the garden right away. Placed my Vintage order also not long ago. But for me it was Alba and species, they would be planted in the garden.

I have 12 coming from Vintage about the same time, and I was going to pot them up in larger pots for the winter like Olga says. I am going to do that even for the hardy ones, but that is because I am doing some soil amendment for where I plan to plant them, and I thought I would let it all mellow over the winter before I planted the roses out.

Yesterday I started Bright Lights Swiss Chard, India Mustard Greens, Summer Crisp Looseleaf Lettuce, Seven Top Turnips, and Red Bowl Looseleaf Lettuce. I have a square foot garden and use a mini-hoop greenhouse over it (to cover when it freezes). Today the high is going to be 77 degrees -- so it's been quite warm so far this winter. We've only had one week this year where the temps got down to freezing at night for about 3 nights in a row. There is supposed to be a cold night next week -- I'll just cover the garden up for that night. I'm also planning on what I'll be growing this coming spring!! I need to get my mind made up so I'll know if I need to order any seeds for varieties that I don't have seed for. Judy Here is a link that might be useful: Ft2Garden.com

I put them into the ground right away. The only exception this year was Oranges N Lemons, which I put in a small pot. I've had ONL before in a previous garden, and it struggles with winter, which I have found is true of most McGredy roses (which I love). I bought two HPs this year, the rest were moderns, and all except ONL went right into the ground. The only concern I'd have would be buying bands in the sales, later in summer. The later they're planted, the riskier it gets. Everything I bought as a band last summer and planted survived.

Are you still expecting freezing temps and snow? Go for it! It's the freeze/thaw that gets them going. I'm in Z6 and started in March when I first wintersowed. Love this stuff! Can't wait for sprouts in spring! Oh..and firing up the hot tub again! Enjoy! My photos are the only things that are keeping me from going cabin crazy!

I am in zone 6 in southern Ohio. It is hot but you can still start peas. I planted mine in seed starter cells on my deck and kept them well watered (be careful though because too much water will rot them) so the soil temp wasn't too hot. They grew just fine and I transplanted them in my garden last week. They are still doing well. Along with peas I have broccoli growing on my deck in seed cells. I kept them in the shade but as soon as they started sprouting moved them to a sunny spot (they will get leggy fast if you don't). You could always pre-sprout seeds in a damp paper towel in the house if you are worried about the temperatures. I will plant lettuce and spinach but not yet, it is still too hot. Btw, I live in zone 6a, close to areas in zone 6b.

Thanks for your feedback!! I have not had success w/ potted plants in my garage (attached to the house and too warm in there, I think)so I think I'm going to play it safe and have them shipped in the spring.
