Also, any beginner resources for bulbs would be appreciated! If there are any big box stores close to you, (Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot, Menards, etc) I'd check those out for hopefully some reduced priced Daffodils, or Hyacinths, or muscari (grape hyacinth), or crocuses. I would not recommend any tulips from the big box stores as most varieties sold that way are not the perennial ones. Some of the on-line sources have quit shipping for the season. Dreams: Welcome! No, it's not too late to start. I see that although in NC you are zone 6. Perennial and hardy annuals go out now, tender annuals later. I am in zone 6 SW Ohio, and I start annuals in March and April, closer to my last frost date, so that they aren't damaged by late frost. Most perennials don't bloom the first year, but annuals will. Personally I wouldn't prune it now. I generally prune mine back to 3' in the winter (Nov/Dec) and back to 1' (when possible) in the early spring. I have never pruned them this late in the season, so I can't offer much useful advice. As for transplanting, I wouldn't do that either right now, especially if it's well established. You'll get more useful information; if not, try asking over in the butterfly forum.

It needs to go dormant before a hard freeze. I would up pot it and bring it in to an area such as an unheated garage and let it go dormant. I would then plant it in the spring after the last recorded frost date for previous years in your area. My soil is red clay, I would plant it in a hole three times larger than the pot, or more. Amend the soil with compost and the soil removed from the planting hole, mixed thoroughly. If water stands, mound the soil. Plant the tree four inches deeper than it was in the pot. If your ground freezes, this will help protect the roots. Also, the buried stem will root and the plant will grow better.. You could also plant the tree maybe a month or so after it goes dormant. You must protect it from the cold this first year if you do. The figs on it now will drain energy that it needs to survive the first winter since it is not established in the ground. For any plant to thrive, you must take care of the roots first or nothing else will matter.
