Sounds like buttercrunch and iceberg. Iceberg lettuce can be trickier and is why a lot of people don't grow it. It is quite normal for the first leaves to splay outward. Cabbage grows the same way and the head is formed by later leaves who, in succession, bend in and eventually form the tighter head. I am looking at your zone number and wondering how far along this crop is. I don't do iceberg every year and only save it for the years when I can get it planted very early and it has an adequate cool season to grow. Iceberg doesn't like heat and can bolt rather easily. I start my iceberg in a greenhouse early and it's set out in transplants instead of direct sowed because it takes a rather long season for it to mature and most of that season needs to be cool. So I guess I'm asking how long our crop has been in ground? If not very long, keep watching it to see if the later leaves don't start to curl in to form heads. If it's been in ground a long time, and your weather is heating up.........it's more at risk for not developing heads and bolting.

Thanks mzstitch, michaelg and kippy-the-hippy. I think I wasn't clear about the leaves. I didn't mean to indicate that some of the bushes only have a few leaves, etc. What I meant is that a few bushes have lots of leaves that are turning yellow with brown edges, a few bushes have no leaves like that and a few bushes that have a small amount of leaves like that. I am in So California, zone 10A and we are in a severe drought situation. They were only planted about three months ago so I haven't fertilized them yet, I hand water (until I get my drip system up and running) once or twice a week, depending on temperatures and they are in full sun. They are planted in front of a light colored stucco wall. I don't know if our water co is pumping ground water. Again, thanks for all your help! Oh and it was too dark to take more photos. Though I cannot grow ALL African Violets well, ... there are a multitude of varieties that I can grow. When I was exploring roses, ... it was disheartening to discover that the plants which bear the perfect Hybrid Tea roses we are all familiar with (from florists at Valentines and other times), ... would NOT grow well in my Midwest landscape ... and that either the winters, the diseases, or the insect pests would destroy or hopelessly disfigure them. That is, if one was averse to a rigorous spraying program. And, of course, this spraying is no light thing. It is even recommended that one wear Hazmat clothing when performing the necessary spraying and to be very careful to guard one's eyes, nose, and throat from the chemicals. So, I became committed to a non-spray garden (though I have discovered that I will have to spray ... less rigorously, perhaps, ... my tomatoes to guard therm from fungal disease as well). Fortunately, there are a few different options for successfully growing roses where I live without the meed for spraying. I, too, disdained the Knockout Rose selections for a time, especially when those offerings only supported single-flowered options. I became aware of and planted particularly disease-resistant varieties, such as Carefree Beauty, and Quietness, along with a host of other offerings developed by Dr. Griffith Buck for Midwest landscapes. I also planted Carefree Wonder, Fairy Rose, Bonica, and, ultimately, some pink Knockouts. I couldn't bear to think of my roses only blooming once a year, so I steered clear of most of the Vintage Roses (though I did plant Mystic Beauty, which was derived from the beautiful vintage rose, Souvenir de la Malmaison). Carefree Beauty I also planted a half-dozen varieties of David Austin's rose, which have been all the rage for the last 20 years or so. Being a novice at roses, I promptly killed most of my initial rose plantings, either to winter-kill, or to disease, or to my own misplacement of the shrubs. But a few plants remain, ... I have a couple Carefree Beauties, a Fairy rose planting, and a few recovering Knockouts. I've had great success the last few years with Gene Boerner, which provides blooms all season long. I also have a few remaining Austin Eglantynes, which bloom for me each year. Gene Boerner (with Knockouts) I added a Champlain rose this year, which should be hardier through the winter. It seems that pink is the color of choice of the most vigorous disease-resistant rose offerings, though the initial Knockouts were red, of course.

vaporvac - I've had 2 Cloud10s. The first one was so wimpy with tiny little flowers and never climbed. The second one started out the same but I fertilized it more and since it never stopped raining last year it seemed to like that better and actually put out several 5' canes. It does not BS at all! The flowers hang on a long time but they will get dirty looking with tons of rain. But it has very little foliage and I cannot detect any fragrance. I put it inside an obelisk and I think I should have wound the stems around the outside and it might look better. At the time I was thinking deer protection since they were roaming the gardens all night but they reached right in and helped themselves.
