Mine is already 10 feet high. I'm not sure how big your arbor is.

I had some dieback the first year, but none last year. But my zone is warmer than yours.

I've killed 2! I can't get her to make it though the spring freezes. Maybe wait and see.....you say you've lost one.

I'm going to SP mine, I have her going along a white picket fence and she is just too big, her canes are so long, about 10-15 ft., it was a bad decision to put her there, I know that now but besides all that she only puts out one spring flush and the rest of the season there might be only 2-4 blooms, and with all the blackspot she gets even with spraying she is just not worth all the trouble.

Thank you everyone. Gosh...not what I expected. I originally had planned on putting Viking Queen around an arbor, but opted for Zephy at the last minute. The way she is growing, she will be a monster in no time.

Have grown very sucessfully for over 5 yrs on an arbor. The crown is buried a good 4" and I cover with a hardwood mulch for the winter. I also wrap the canes in burlap. I have winter kill with other roses but not this one.I'm actually in zone 4.

baccus, do you have a bush on each side of the arbor? How much does your Zephy bloom?

The JD blooms like crazy, primarily in the spring. Has pretty pink blossoms in bunches with intense perfume. Grows wildly with 20"canes the rest of the year. Attracts Jap. Beetles which I control with Merit.

Baccus, do you have 1 rose bush on each side of the arbor? Do you prune it frequently during the summer to keep the long canes in check?

We are all wondering about ZD. When she grows and when she blooms she is traffic stopping, heart-breakingly beautiful. The rest of the time she suffers from black spot, die back, sporadic repeat, deer and jap beets will devour her, and she often seems to be malnourished for one thing or another; regardless of one's fertilizing regime, the lady has a delicate digestive system.

Whether or not to plant another rose on the other side of the arbor? It depends on how ZD does for you. I would. Not a climber, but something reliable that will take the eye off ZD when she looks scuzzy.

I have JD on one side and Don Juan the other side. Both are over 5 years old but the Don Juan has never bloomed. I planted a new D J on a pillar this spring and and it has grown 4 feet with nice red blossoms. Both have the same leafs so the barren one so it is not from the rootstock. I'm going to get rid of the baron one. Maybe nature and a severe winter will help. It usually dies back to the mulch level

Thanks everyone. I've decided to place Zephy in a new home. I've just ordered 2 Viking Queens from RU and will plant them as soon as they arrive, one on each side of my arbor. Zephy has grown tremendously in a short 3 months. She is a tangled mass of canes going every which way. If I had more room and a large arch or corner, I'd let her go. I offered Zephy to my roser friend. She came over and looked at her was frightened at the sight! LOL! She really doesn't have room for such a beast. So another friend who has no roses will take her. There's a beautiful spot that gets morning and early afternoon sun. She will have lots of room to grow and bloom to her hearts desire....sniff, sniff.
Can't wait to get those Viking Queens....don't you love that name???
