Zephirine Drouhin in Zone 9b (Pasadena)

I just got a Zephirine Drouhin for a partial shady patio in Pasadena (Zone 9b). It is about 2-year old and 6ft high already. I planted it last weekend when raining here.

I wonder what I should do for it now. Should I wait until it shoots out new branches and then add rose food? or should I spray it now to prevent disease and insects? I am prepared that ZD is 'fair disease resistant".

I also wonder how ZD generally does in Zone 9b (e.g. L.A. or Pasadena).

You may have some problems with mildew, with ZD.

As to what to do for it, my suggestion for the present is to do NOTHING.
Do not feed your new rose AT ALL until after it has produced its first flush of bloom for the spring.
After you have deadheaded those blooms, you can feed.
Right now, you want it to grow ROOTS, not topgrowth.

Keep it well-watered, particularly in our present hot, dry weather.

Jim- Good to know about Golden Showers. I decided to get one William Lobb to go with my two Fantin Latour roses. I suspect that it might not grow as tall as they say on the website, in my colder climate. In this location it's okay it it's just a big beautiful shrub. Thank you all for your input. I was leaning towards New Dawn for the kitchen garden arbor, but was afraid it might be too exuberant. Finally decided to zone push a little and ordered two Lavender Lassie roses that should arrive early next June. They'll be own root and the arbor will be in one of the most protected locations we have, so I'll keep my fingers crossed :)

What about sharing the place with another rose? I had a zephie which spring bloomed for me in my warm climate. It took a while for her to even do that. In the meantime, I planted another rose and a clematis to give some more color. It was a happy little zoo on that wall. We eventually gave the area to a trellised grape because my sister really wanted a a grape vine and they take space. Zephie went to the neighbor who admired her and I get to see her blooms every spring over the wall. This is the only rose she has because, like you, she cannot tolerate thorns. I would keep Zephie and get on the list for something else and then grow them together side by side and let them combine. I had a pretty australian honeysuckle and Joseph's Coat combination once. You have to frequently go in and make sure one plant does not overtake the other. My Zephie flowered best with plenty of horse manure and water soluble fertilizer but only in the spring with a few here and there after summer.

My Duchesse de Brababt blooms very well with just morning sun (and very little of that in the winter) and is one of the few tea roses in which I can detect a lovely scent. Her sport, Mme. Joseph Schwartz is another contender, and may actually be an even prettier rose. They do have thorns, but they're small and not very bothersome. Mme. Joseph Schwartz

Felix LeClerc repeats beautifully for me. I have 2 of them - both are great and generous. I love John Cabot, but he does a big spring flush and then just the occasional scattering of bloom. For me. But then, I'm pretty stingy with fertilizer, maybe he repeats more with more baby-ing. The 3 I listed, Felix, Cape Diamond, and Capt. Samuel Holland, repeat very well for me in spite of my cheapness with the fertilizer. Also Parade (but not sure it's hardy for zone 5). Another great one is Purple Skyliner, blooms beautifully and often but I don't think it'd be hardy in zone 5. If you are zone 6 you should be ok.

Emerald, I have 2 ZDs in a more shade than sun area that I planted from a peat pot last year. It has an overhand from the garage/roof too. Mine gets afternoon sun. It's already up the top near the roof line in some areas right now after a year in the ground. For me in the last 2 weeks I did not defoliate or do my normal dormancy routine for these 2. I want to get some more basal breaks so I did a TBSP. of Epsom salts, sul-po-mag and my Dr. Earth Organic fert. Mind you, mine has been in the ground for a year and it did bloom a little last year. I'm happy with how much it grew this past year, surprised actually, so I'm eagerly awaiting to see what they do this year!!!

Jeri is the queen and has helped me alot so listen to her on your new ZDs. At least you have 2 yr old plants and hopefully you'll really some it come into it's glory this year. I'm in So. Orange County about 5 miles from the beach if that helps. Whether that is zone 9a or 9b, I don't know. I just can't wait for mine to get really mature, I saw them on a gardening show, in GA of course, but from everything I saw, heard and read, I can put up with mildew and will spray for that to get the fantastic color and fragrance I want.
