I just planted a bare-root Zeph this spring and I love it too. The fragrance is spectacular and it's still just a baby.

Can anyone give a pronunciation for the name? I always wonder if I'm saying it right...

It is a stingy repeater. I am less than impressed with mine, enough so that I am finally going to dig it and give it away. I am glad you are enjoying it, and that color IS absolutely marvelous! A few nights ago we had 'scary storm-sky' and the atmospheric light made Zeffy nearly blindingly pink!

Greenhaven - too bad about the stinginess - but I also have a totally bullet proof John Davis in that front planter spot, so I don't need a huge display on the Z.D. As long as it survives for me, I'll keep it. I'll baby it. And if it doesn't, well annual potted plants cost that much.

I hope your ZD survives! Yes it wafts. Mine is quite large now, and when it blooms in the spring, it scents the entire back yard. Right now I only have one bloom on it:) but I usually get a small fall repeat. IT's mostly a spring bloomer.

If you were going to pair Zeph with another vine, which would you choose? Is there a climber that has a better fall repeat that would be a good companion? I haven't gotten around to building an arbor yet so my Zeph is currently planted in a big pot sitting next to a potted white jasmine and they look very good together.

Carol, hehe, I get plenty of typose in just plain old English (such as this, typos, lol) and Zephirine is always super long anyway :) a pretty darn hard name to get right! And to this day I will sometimes forget whether Marchesa Boccella has one s or two s's even though I know in the back of my mind that it's always Marchesa.

I'm just craaazy about the French language and wish I could speak it the way my BF does.... :D

I don't have Zéphirine Drouhin in my present garden but the one I had years ago certainly wasn't stingy. I had flowers all summer and sometimes as late as November, depending on the weather.

My Zephirine is about 15 years old and blooms off and on all summer into fall--I'm in zone 6 --I feed it every 4 weeks or so and i think that helps it bloom often

I'm in NC and I get blooms on Zephy all summer. One huge flush in the spring, a few over most of the summer and another good flush in the fall. She smells great and is one of my favorites. I would love her even if she was scentless because she is thornless! Denise

She sounds like a great rose. I feed my roses with my compost tea from my composter. Mix it with a ton of water and all my flowers/roses love it.

Sigh ... gotta love roses.

I received my zepherine the other day, a band and it was very dry, soil had spilled out but not all the leaves were yellow when I opened it, repacked the soil and watered it.

The next day it was losing all the leaves even the ones that were green had turned yellow.
Argh... it now is a bare twig as is the rose de reisch.

What should I do to prevent them from dying off completely?

Lovelymornings, give your roses some time, the shipping process can be very hard on them especially in the summer heat. if you cannot get them planted right away pot them up into bigger containers and water well but don't drown them. Wait to feed them, but put them in a sunny/bright spot with some light shade. My guess is they will be pushing out new growth in no time.

They are pretty tough; I have only ever lost one band that wasn't my fault, and I knew they were sending it when it was barely large enough to ship.

losing the leaves is what plants do to protect themselves, not to worry yet. If the leaves were dead on the bush, that would be more worrying. Plenty of water, keep in a cool place with some shade from midday sun..

I always (probably incorrectly) pronounce it as (Ze Fer eeny), thinking the E on the end is a hard E and is not silent. I will probably continue to pronounce it this way.

Florence posted a pic some time ago, I believe she had an Autumn Sunset planted next to her Zeffy; it was gorgeous. I ordered one from Oregon this spring, it has done great so far in my garden, but still too young to bloom. Looking forward to it next spring.

lovelymornings: Mine arrived as a bare-root and I affectionately called it "The Sticks" because all I had were these little bare twigs. It quickly pushed out canes and bloomed a little in late summer of its first year! Despite having been damaged in its 2nd year by roofers, it has outgrown its support (eek) - bloomed like a madwoman all a-sprawl at first flush - and is busy shooting up new growth and has a few new blooms even though I did not deadhead at all! So don't despair - they really want to grow.

I am no expert by any means, but I do concur with campanula and greenhaven. What zone are you in? If you have cold winters, my thought is that you may want to get her in the ground soon so that she has time to put down and establish her root system - but if it is very hot it may be best to do this in the cool of the evening, being extra-careful not to splash when watering in. Again, keeping in mind that this is not expert advice and only from my own experience. I water mine with a very slow trickle from the hose, just laid on the ground underneath, moving the position of the hose every few minutes, and watching carefully so as not to overwater.
