Zephirine Drouhin as a bush?
Comments (7)Many short climbers can be turned into nice large shrubs if you keep cutting back the long basal shoots (to 3 or 4') until the mass of laterals is so great that the plant doesn't feel the need to make a lot of long basal shoots. I have seen pictures where ZD seemed to have been turned into an upright shrub. However, my ZD was indefatigable in producing 8'-9' basals, so I suspect they had to hack on it constantly. I have also seen it grown as a very large fountain-shaped shrub maybe 8 x 10' and composed mostly of many arching basals, probably not pruned much. I guess you would thin the thicket by removing some older canes each year at the base. This is just to get your thread started. Others may know better....See MoreOther Roses the Color of Zephirine Drouhin
Comments (15)blank_gen, I have 60 Zephys and they have a glorious spring flush then they are done. So what boncrow66 said holds true. The rest of the season they just bloom here and there. I also have Thomas Affleck — after I saw Jim’s. Its color is not the same a the Zephys, it’s a darker pink. Not by much but it’s still darker. BTW both are thornless. I tied mine down to the top of our fence and just let them go. Didn’t trim any laterals and ended up with some outstanding spring flushes. Here is an example of what I’m talking about…....See MoreZEPHIRINE DROUHIN beginning to bloom more
Comments (8)Thank you! Even with all the rain we've had, and blackspot problems with some of my other roses, so far that hasn't been a problem with ZD this season, hope that continues to be the case. I don't grow it because the individual blooms are outstanding, I grow it for the fragrance and the colorful display when it is in full bloom. I will admit though, I wouldn't like it nearly as much if it had major blackspot problems!...See MoreFull bush shots of MEC, KATHLEEN HARROP
Comments (11)Thank you dizzylizzy, Diane and Lisa. Diane they are both Bourbons. MEC is a sport of MME ISAAC PEREIRE and KATHLEEN HARROP is a sport of ZEPHIRINE DROUHIN. I like them both better than the other two. Like most of my Bourbons (except for SDlM) they only have a few scattered blooms after the first flush. I used to think I didn’t want roses that didn’t repeat frequently, but I enjoy them while I’m waiting for the others to begin their show. I do think it’s going to be a good season, everything is very healthy and I have lots of buds, However, we’ve had June/July like weather and all weekend lots of wind, Ive been doing a lot of watering. Lisa, I’m not sure. Seems like I saw KH listed in RU and looked it up on HMF, loved the color, and thought it was charming, that’s why I got it. Some fuller blooms today on MEC...See MorenanadollZ7 SWIdaho
